Title: New '88 T-Bird Sport...w00t!
Post by: Sick88Tbird on November 23, 2007, 08:49:32 PM
I literally JUST picked this car up...$400...py pics, but I'm excited so they're going on...you can't tell from the pics but the trunk-lid is bashed in...I will be swapping it out for my old T-bird deck lid.  The upgrades will come slowly but surely...I have enough speed parts to supply half of south jersey...lmao.

The interior needs a thorough cleaning, and the sun-roof has a bad leak, so some duct tape will temporarily fix that until I can find a sunroof seal and possibly motor.  The headliner is, of course, trash.  Oh well.  It beats the hell out of the 86 Plymouth Reliant wagon I just sold to purchase this car.

Yes sir, dark blue...or whatever ford calls it...lol.  It feels weird to start from BONE stock...even my first '88 Bird had a blown SO and was replaced with an HO when I got it...and my '88 XR-7 had an HO and 5-speed...lol.  I'm hoping the 5-speed headers, exhaust and HO upper will wake it up a little...I think my 3.73 rear will help too...probably will still run 15's though...lmao.

Yeah bit of a difference between a SO and a HO isn't there? ;)

It's like night and day...first fox...HO/AOD/3.73's...second fox...HO/T-5/3.08...and they felt like they would have run neck and neck...this thing feels like a torquey V-6 to me...lol.  I'm sooooooooooooooo not used to quiet exhaust...I need to get my headers and dynomax system from the old 'Bird on this thing and quick! lol

I'm just so freakin' happy to be back in one of these cars...I drove that stinkin' K-car for a few months and that was all it took...lol.

In all fairness to that little k-wagon...I sold it tonight for $850...I paid $300 lol.  Go figure.

Strangely enough, I used to call that K wagon the "Pimpmobilus Maximus"...lmao.  Thanks to all, and here are some daylight pics for ya.  I did nothing to the car yet, aside from pulling the For Sale sign down and duct taping the sunroof(can't wait to fix that the right way).  The guy had the alternator rub through the upper rad hose and there was a big under-hood fire, so that explains a lot from the pics.  There will be a lot of clean up as time goes by, I'll probably wait till it gets warm so I can shampoo the seats and carpet, otherwise it'll never dry in this cold.

Gnarled up hoodliner(T/C hood coming soon)

All stock, that'll change soon enough.

I'll try to post pics as I go along...I haven't even had the car 24hrs yet and the sport wheels are already spoken for...lol.

Thanks again,
Don

I appreciate the offer man, but I have a set of 10-holes with awesome tires that are going on...this car definitely needs some brake work...good thing the cougar has newish struts and 11" brakes and my 3.73 rear has new drums and all that jazz.  I just have to find a suitable place to cannibalize the cougar...laying on crushed asphalt in sub-freezing temps will NOT be fun...lol.

I will definitely post pics as progress...well...progresses....lol.  This car is going to stay SO for awhile...I've always been curious as to how these cars would have run if Ford produced them with T-5's.  I guess I'll find out...I don't know if it's in the AOD or it needs a tune-up, but it shutters occasionally at lower speeds...but it's in like 2nd/3rd gear.  I'm really suprised this thing doesn't smoke one bit, ever...it probably will after a year of my abuse.  Okay, family is harassing me, I'll post up later tonight probably.

Well, I swapped my K&N air filter in and figured I'd lose the air silencer while I was at it...after I pulled it out, I noticed that somebody had cut the narrowed down inlet off of it(if you've ever seen these you know what I'm talking about).  I just can't figure out why somebody would go through the hassle of doing that...so, on my tool-box it sits, waiting to be photographed for all to laugh at.

About the studdering feel, check the TV cable and cable bushing on the throttlebody.

I'm actually thinking it just needs a tune-up now...it only happens when it shifts to 3rd at super light throttle...under power it feels good in every gear.

Does it do it when the engine is cold? I ask because my distributor stator used to do that before it really went south...heat was killing it, and so it never acted up when the engine was cold.

It does it all the time...it's due to that early 3rd gear shift that I was telling you about when we put your shift kit in...lol.

I decided to do brakes on it today...the guy I bought it from had a new set in the trunk and never got around to it...figuring it would be a simple pad slap, I only grapped the tools I thought I'd need.  Pull the wheels, rotors are shot and no material left on the pads...just backing plates grinding away.  I figure a pad slap will hold me over until I do the 11" brakes, so I started in...driver side went fine, no problems.  Got to the passenger side, got everything apart and started to compress the caliper...I compressed it about a quarter of they way, then it dead stopped...upon further inspection, I found a major tear in the piston dust boot...the piston had a huge ring of rust around it...needless to say it's not compressing and I have to wait for a ride down to my brother's house so I can pick up a spare caliper.

When I sold my 11" brakes from my other car to "Quietleaf", I also did the install, so luckily for me, I have plenty of spare parts...just sucks being stuck all day...I was really trying to get out and find a job today...lol.  Oh well, no rest for the weary.

Shorten the TV cable till it's fully extended at WOT... If shifts are too hard/late at light throttle, lengthen it a bit...

The TV cable is THAT easy to do !!!! I wish I would have known that.

Yeah, I'm aware of how to adjust the TV cable...I've done it a hundred times...I'm just not real worried about it since I won't be driving it for long with the AOD in place.

Title: A little update
Post by: Sick88Tbird on December 12, 2007, 06:26:06 PM
Well, I got bored today and decided to swap in my HO upper plenum and TB that I had floating around.  I also found one of many of my "short belts" and bypassed the air pump.  I got everything together and double and triple checked everything...start it up...idled between 900-1200 like it had a top fuel cam in it...I was like that's cool...wtf?  DUH...forgot to connect the vacuum hose for the MAP.  The car runs better at idle and part throttle than it did before...feels like a slight loss of wheel spinning torque...but in 3rd gear cruising, it feels like it has more power from 1500+ rpm at half throttle.  Full throttle, probably not a noticable difference...if there is, it's very slight...now I need to get the exhaust, T-5 and 3.73's in...lol.
