Title: Ever do something dumb and you wanted to smack yourself....
Post by: thunderjet302 on November 19, 2007, 09:27:24 PM
So I went out to the garage to start the snow bloweer yesterday just to make sure it worked before we got any snow:hick: . The 88 T-bird has been sitting for 3 weeks in the garage. Every week I check the oil and start it and let it idle for 15 minutes just to keep things *oiled* up. I've done that every winter when I put it away. Any ways I dropped the spark plug for the snow blower and it rolled right under the T-bird. I look under there and noticed a small oil spot about the size of the top of a soup can under the rear sump plug. I was like "wtf the motor was changed this year and the pan is new?" Well then I remembered something. I changed the oil back in September. When I did I didn't change the oil plug gasket. Well it turns out the oil drain plug is tight but the gasket is a one time use thing:hick: . So now it's going to leak a little till I change the oil in the spring. Ah the joys of doing something stupid when it's so simple not to :dunce: . It leaks so little that I didn't even notice that oil was missing when I checked before I started it. Oh well.

Ford makes an updated version of our drain plug (I dont' remember the size or part #) that fits the old fox pan. The updated version has a rubber O-ring seated in  of the bolt, like all of the late model stuff. I installed these last time I changed oil and no more leaks.

i dont know how much this helps but when i had to get a new drain bolt gasket i would just buy a new bolt. should definately work for you four cyl guys though.
the gasket cost almost 3 bucks, itself
new oil drain bolt from autozone which comes with new gasket cost $1.00
