Ouch!
We had a miniature pincher that bit my daughter once. She was about three and spinning around the room (dancing) and he just lunged at her and clamped down on her arm giving her a good gash that required stitches. We assumed an isolated one time thing, and then about two months later he did it again this time in her face again requiring stitches. We had to have him put down as I fractured his hip when I kicked him across the room against the wall to get him off of her.

Not that this is always the case, but it is my experience that once they have shown they will bite, they will bite again. I have had many dog’s in my life and none of them ever bit other than this one. I’m sure you love your dog (possibly not as much right now with your face all swollen) But I will never risk the safety of my children or grandchildren again on an assumption that “it’s a one time thing”

luckily for us it's just me and my mom here.

I am certainly going to be more careful around him. The only thing that threw me off was he did not growl before hand he just snapped. I was petting him earlier and he was wagging his tail happy as could be...

I hope he does not show aggression anymore.

He is a 7 year old Akita.

in his defense we were flicking his dry food across the room and he chases it and eats it. I was a little too close I think and he turned around really quick and bit me.

I agree with Jim. It's really a tough call. When I was growing up, we only had one dog that bit, but, like Jim said, it was more than once. After he almost removed a neighbor kid's leg, he got put down. I mean, as my dad told us, "We took him to the country to live on a farm."

:beatyoass: I learned (very painfully) as a little kid to not mess with dogs' food.

If he was going to be passive-aggressive, I think it would've already been a noticeable trait.
I hope it's an isolated incident. But I'd leave his food alone from now on. ;)

I just hope this doesn't turn into a thread like that one about Pit Bulls....blah blah.:flame:
Hope ya heal soon, dog bites suck hard.

my friends dog used to bite my hands up all the time, even when i wasnt playing with it. tiny little  messed my fingers up once or twice:mad:
none of the dogs i ever had bit me for real though, all were pretty docile for being "aggressive" breeds.

We have been playing that game with his food since he was little. I think he is just getting too old for it now.

My grandmothers old boss bread akita's, and almost all of them would be sweet as could be but if something happened they didn't like they got NASTY. Never been real fond of them...

My brother has two pitbulls.  They are great dogs, but Mischa is a little sensitive and will snap if you try to pet her on the head (until you reaaaally know her) but she always acts sorry when she does it, its more of a natural response that she can't break.  Actually, Mischa just plain hates people she doesn't know, but once you really get to know her, she's so sweet.  Mather, who's built like a tank likes to bite Mischa in the face and sometimes when he gets a bit playful will actually try to bite me in the face.  He doesn't mean anything malicious by it, he just doesn't realize how incredibly powerful his jaws are.  A stern no and he snaps out of it.  He's friendly to everyone.  God help anyone that tries to break into thier house though, because Mischa will attack and once Mather realizes its a real threat look out as fast and strong as he is.

This may sound like I am an ass, but if a dog, even my own, did that to me, it would go to dog heaven. that is just me though. easy choice for someone with three kids though.

Akita != Pit Bull

Akitas can have issues with dominance. If it wasn't a blind accident, it looks like you aren't the alpha dog in the house.

This (http://"http://rapidshare.com/files/68427796/sv.0707.part1.rar") may sound like a bit of a rant, and it probably is, but I feel I must say something. I probably walked into it myself for posting a story about my brother's pitbulls  The thing is, pitbulls were bred for fighting...other pitbulls. They are bred so that their owners can break up a fight without fear of being attacked. The problem comes when owners do not respect the dog and make sure it knows early own who it's master is. If their owner is not dominant, then they can be dangerous. In the case of my brothers dogs, they playfight with each other, but have been trained well enough it never goes far, and they stop immediately if one gets even the slightest injury. They actually look out for each other sort of like brother/sister. Again the problem is when people force them to fight dogs they don't know, especially fighting to death, or near death. When Mischa and Mather fight (wrestle is probably a better term for what they do), they do it purely for fun and watching their speed (especially Mather since he is part grayhound and fast enough to keep up with them) and their agility is truly amazing.

Are pitbulls safe with other dogs? So long as they are watched while they get to know each other, and have seperate food bowls when they are fed. Are pitbulls safe with humans? Definately (although Mischa generally doesn't like strangers and will snap back lightly [she grew up on the streets for a bit before my brother saved her from sure death since "dangerous" dogs are usually destroyed by the pound]) Would I fear either of them attacking anyone they know? Certainly not! Should someone who knows their owner and is meeting them for the first time be afraid of them? Not unless he wants the dogs to walk all over him. Should someone with harmful intent to my brother's family be afraid of them? He should be terrified.

There are numerous dogs I would be more afraid of randomly attacking their owners than pitbulls, the problem is, for those bad owners who's pits do attack, their strength can make things ugly fast and that is what makes the headlines.

End Rant.

If anyone would like to discuss this further, please start a new thread. Sorry I invaded this one, I'm done in this thread.

Let's not stereotype a particular breed of dog for biting, when it's well-known that ANY breed of dog will bite.
Just that Pit Bulls, and other large, "aggressive" breeds are prized for that very trait are very often abused and mistreated to make them extremely aggressive and dangerous to be around.
My 2 Pits have never bitten anyone except in play, but no, I wouldn't trust them around a small child or a stranger either.

The fact that a lot of people think EVERY pit, rott, dalmation, doberman, etc etc are vicious just fvcking  me off.
Some are that way, but most are not.
It's the bad stories that the media has a frenzy on.
Besides, if a black lab ripped a kid's face off, how many other black lab's would be persecuted for that?

It's the whole "all pit bulls are vicious" stigma that I hate.
But to keep my ass out of a jam, mine stay locked up in their own building, and I let them out to play only when nobody else is around.

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I can see where it's going already.
I bet if Carl had a poodle and it bit him, nobody would even mention vicious dogs.
And it's ed funny how ppl jump all over Pit Bulls when the proper dog breed was mentioned. :flame:

Sorry Carl, to go off in your thread.

I'm curious, do any of you dog owners have insurance on the dogs?

Because when applying for homeowners insurance, you are asked whether or not you have pets...and if you respond, "Yes," then you're asked what kind, and if you reply that you have a dog, then they ask what breed. Basically they want to know if you have a KNOWN vicious dog. If so, then you're going to get a much higher rate (if they'll even cover you at all) to cover liability. Say what you want about prejudice, etc. but when it comes to insurance, it's very cut and dried. And if insurance companies classify a certain breed of dog as "vicious"...they've got to have a reason why. Just food for thought.

BTW, when I told my new agent I had a cat, I also mentioned that it bites. No special rates for vicious cats. ;)

Carl, I'm glad you're alright and hope that it was just an isolated incident.

I don't care if its a poodle, pit bull, lab or whatever, the dog would have to go. Bitten owner can = bitten anybody. Bitten anybody can mean big lawsuit nowadays. I watch court tv alot.  That is all.
