While cleaning out my basp00get I came across a 1985 Motor Trend magazine and in the back I found this.
I'm sure some of you have seen it but I thought I'd post it anyway.
Notice it says Thunderbird convertible. Apparently, it was an option but did anyone actually buy one? Makes you think...

that means there has to be some out there. Cause i know the mark VII was done, we all know the cougar was done. Wheres them birds! Other then that one red one you guys have pics of.
What wheels are on that Cat'? Looks almost like daytons? As for a bird vert.... I can only hope they did. A fila vert at that:bowdown:
Good luck on that one buddy.
Hey, a mans got to have dreams
Hi!,
On the picture is a cougar 83-86, but I never see a Tbird convertible, I'm in doubt it existed, anyway, I don't see any 4 eyed Bird around Me, except My bird :-0))
Best regards
Dom.
I'm I the only one that noticed that they said they could do it to call them. That doesn't mean that any were made. They are just letting you know they can do it.
they must have we have seen one there has to be more somewhere!
Anyone wana try to call the number and see if they can/will make a bird into one ( if it still works I mean)
Uh no...
Maybe you're just into wasting people's time with assinine questions....
Ok, Ok I get it. I can't say a single thing non tech. Got it
:shoothead
how bout if you wanna know, you pick up the phone yourself and call? fingers broken?
904 area code is down here in florida.
That's an '84 Cougar convertible in that ad. I have the brochure for it...that same lady with the ultra-cool 1980's flip hairdo is in the brochure.
Coach Builders Ltd. was in Gainesville, FL. I had heard somewhere that they either moved or got absorbed into another company. Isn't the 937 area code where Gainesville is now?
It's entirely possible that aero Fox T-Bird convertibles exist. I have yet to see one though. I think for all the torture that I and other Cougar owners have put the T-Bird guys through for all these years about the Cat convertibles, finding a T-Bird one would be sweet justification for ya. ;)
Here's the company info:
Coach Builders Limited Inc.

Looks like just the area code changed on the phone number, compared to the original 1985 ad. Nice.
So...who's calling? ;)
Probably someone who is actually interested AND actually HAS THE MONEY to do something of the sort.
"Spare Parts Inventory
A complete spare parts inventory is maintained for all conversions that we build. Most shipments can be made the same day."
Maybe they still have cougar parts, Or even Bird parts if they ever made em.
I Wish I Had Vert Ads....i Might Roll Over To Gainsville One Day And Check The Place Out Its About 30 Miles From Me
That would be cool.. Maybe they would take interest in a conversion they did over 20 years ago and check for spare parts or even make some.
I would love to put one of their convertibles and the car craft convertibles side by side to see the differences.
I called them........ company name is still the same.
Larry Moran talked for a while and he said he joined the company back in 82.
He remembers doing a few cougar verts and more specifically ,, he remembers that the Tbird was not done for many reasons that made the whole setup not so practical. The Back window on the cougar compared to the tbird was the problem. Doing a vert to a bird of that body style was not something they decided to follow through with but thats not to say another company didnt do the vert bird either.
I guess you could say in short, they were not satisfied that they could keep the bird looking like a bird with respect to the back window after the top was up.
Larry also mentioned that he remebers doing the cougar verts but not directly for any one dealer. He also said there are really no records available to support any info on how many were done.
Also,,, no they are not interested in doing any more verts or kits on these cars. That would call for refering to information / drawings / data that they no longer have. Parts are probably out of the question as well.
Awesome info!
Too bad they won't do anymore work on our cars though.
Makes 'em all the more rare though. :hick:
do we know of any other company who did the conversions?
Car Craft ( sp) did.
Quick question. Were all Vert Cougars white with red interior?
No they weren't; in fact I was going to buy one a couple years back that was all original, red exterior with tan leather interior, and a white top. It was #56 (I think that's what it was) of the collection. The guy wanted $1,800 for it and when I called him about it, he was asking me questions about it, and said that because of my knowledge of the Cougars, he'd give it to me for $1,500. All it needed was the driver's side window regulator. Still kicking myself for not having the money for it.
LOL No, just seems like it though. ;)
There was definitely a very conservative color palette on the convertibles. So far I've seen...
White/red interior/white top
White/blue interior/blue top
Black/tan interior/tan top
Black/grey interior/black top
Black/red interior/black top
Red/red interior/white top
Red/red interior/black top
There are probably other combinations. Maybe even brown. :yuck:
I think Car Craft did the majority of them. Eric's, Baxo's and Bearmax's are all Car Craft conversions (I think)...
Yeah, we're all car craft conversions.
A guy near me has a one with a Tan exterior. tan interior, and an unknown top color. Plus he won't sell it to me:hick:
I just Got lucky. due to my mother in-law's boyfriend doing a little OWI
he gave her his car. She lives with me and has not paid rent in 2 years. she gave the car to me. i was like what ever. then i did some research. i have 1 of 89 car craft convertible cougars made in 86' red with red interior white top. in good condition. all original with 83K miles. now i just have to figure out what it's worth. it has the 5.0 motor. and yes it has sticker in the door with convert date and serial number and the silver brushed aluminum CAR CRAFT badge on the trunklid. I'll try to get some pics up.http://www.coolcats.net/fox/convertible.html (http://"http://www.coolcats.net/fox/convertible.html")
