Does anyone have a good suggestion on a particular Universal Cat I can put on my car? Anything on Ebay? Or other various sites? I've had this power loss problem when I try to get past 6psi of boost, plus this strange rattle from that area ever since I've owned the car. Thus I believe a replacement is necessary.
Mine has that Small metal tube coming out of the top of it, I'm assuming another smog thing.
I'm looking for anything (cheap) to replace it with. If I could put in a dummy I would, but I really don't want to take the chance when I smog it.
The rattle is most likely a loose heat shield. The small metal tube is most likely the EGR tube.
I've never looked into universal cats, but I have considered changing or eliminating the cat on my turbo 2.3. I'm curious to know how much backpressure it creates.
goerlich #602206 universal $61.00.Looked it up at a store I deal with.never used it don't know how it works.
I can't take off the Heat Shield because of that little tube that runs to the EGR.
That little tube does not run to the EGR. The EGR "feed" is off the exhaust manifold.
That little tube is most likely not connected to anything since those are usually for some sort of air injection from a smog pump, which the EFI 2.3T's never had.
I stand corrected.
The cat does create a lot of backpressure. I ran around with no catback, just a downpipe and cat, upgraded to a full 3" from turbo to bumper, ler and tailpipe, and was a major increase in power.
I know Magnaflow makes hi-flow ones for pretty cheap.
Magnaflow makes them for around 60+ for Hi Flow versions.
Here ge this while it's hot.
Hi Flow (http://"http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Magnaflow-High-Flow-Catalytic-Converter-P-N-94109_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33629QQihZ008QQitemZ180132828703QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW")
Or you could just take it off, thats what I'm doing anyway. I thought of hollowing it out or just getting a piece of pipe put in there. I'm in a bad position for my exhaust because the previous owner just put a new OEM exhaust on and I'm too cheap to shell out the bucks for a whole new system.
nah i think he lives in an area that test emissions :flame:
oh well DMC go for that ebay link!!! its got a 3 inch inlet and outlet, but thats nothing some adapters from autohole cant solve!!! :hick:
if you dont get that one, you need to just go to a ler shop and ask for a converter for your specific vehicle. there arent "universal" converters that will be cheaper, though again ones like that ebay one with no reserve are your best friend ;)
You might be able to get away with just gutting the one you have. I know over at turbo ford I've read many people in California have pass smog in there 2.3T's with a gutted cat. Check into it your self. I have a basic replacment on my 84 T.C. when I replaced the exhust. Much better than that huge as factory unit with the 90* bends at each end.
