Title: What are friends for, right?
Post by: ZondaC12 on June 11, 2007, 10:06:00 PM
Help you up when you're down. And how.

I really bit off more than I could chew with my car this time. I decided I was gonna swap my converter. Got the $80 2400-ish stall Advance Auto Parts Special.

I got as far as lowering the tranny and being ready to remove it, but then reality set in, and I almost burst into tears out of sheer furstration. How the HELL was I going to get that monstrosity out of there?

I should have asked more here. My friend Sean assured me that in fact, the motor mounts will NOT cause the engine to spring back upward and no, the transmission will not slam downward the second you unbolt it because there are dowel pins. :shakehead :dunce:  Sean is going to UTI in Mass., and will be home next weekend. I talked to a couple of my uncles who confirmed what he said, but urged that I get him or someone else to help me, as it's really a two man job because of the sheer size of the tranny. I agreed. That stupid s.o.b. is BIG. Ugh.

Jeez, it's just in that thread where I asked about yanking the tranny you guys made it sound so easy! So I just dove right in figuring if I was able to tear down my engine and swap the 'Stang heads and camshaft into it, I could do this for sure.

I don't know really why I'm posting this. I don't want any sympathy or anything, maybe I just want to give everyone a better idea of how humble my abilities are. I also feel awful looking at that car sitting there on the jackstands, helpless, lifeless for FIVE DAYS! I was so excited too floor it, flash stall the thing up to 2400 and just send those tires into oblivion, along with myself! But Sean's gonna be home next weekend, and he insisted I ask him to come and help me if I needed anything, so after talking to my uncles I called him back and took him up on the offer.

One other thing worth mentioning is he doesn't know jack about computers, so I always play the Windows-doctor whenever he's got problems, so it's give-and-take.

I guess the overall theme is stay close with your friends and do each other favors, you'll both get a lot out of it!

P.S. don't worry I'll prolly take some pics, and definitely let y'all know in the form of both numbers from the G-Tech and a whoopin' and a hollerin' from me, just how much of a difference the sonuvabitch made. I REALLY can't wait to test it out. Then after that, one I get down to like 3 or 4 gallons of gas which I can drain into this BIG ASS bucket I have, I'll drop the tank and put in the 'Stang fuel pump I got, which (and I talked to some guys on this one too!!!!!) sounds MUCH easier for one person to do!

please let me know how the conterter works for you, and the tank i did on my lincoln alone, and im a small kid. put the car on jackstands, when you stick it back in, lube filler neck gasket, slide neck in, and jack the other side up, then try the straps. thats what i did and it worked, had to jack the  out of the tank but it worked!
if i lived closer man id be there asap to help you!

I assume that you will be using a jack to get the transmission out?  A transmission jack is best but a floor jack will do.

You may also think about a transmission cooler with a 2400 stall.

I swapped out my first tranny when I was 14; a auto in a 67 Dodge Dart with a slant six.  It was a mess, oil everywhere and I slipped with the wrench and got a nice cut over my eye, blood kind of looks like tranny fluid.  I also had long hair at the time and got it wrapped up in the creeper rollers.  I remember it quite well.

Now days I have a car hoist and things are so easy.

Good luck and keep up the good work.

I can't remember the last time one of my friends helped me work on one of my cars.
In fact, I've always been the guy dispatched to friends' houses to fix their cars. If my friends ever came over, they would just sit around and hand me the wrong wrenches.

Ahh, I've been there...

About 2 years ago I pulled my tranny to change the clutch and the tailshaft bushing. Got the tranny out and pulled off the tailshaft housing and....um, oops, it won't go back on. Fiddled with it for awhile, couldn't figure it out, so I then threw in this spare T5 I had. Got the car all done, took it out and drove it and found out the synchros in 2nd and 4th were shot.:toilet:

So I had to figure out the original tranny (which I did) and do it all over again...boy was that fun.

Hmmm, 80 bucks for a converter??? Holy shyte, I hope that thing works, I don't know if it's because I'm jaded towards the Chevy side from these past few months, but hell, if you're rocking a 300 dollar converter in a 4L60e then you better be prayin'.  I don't know though, maybe it's just the horror stories, and whatnot, and I know the Custom 'verters are cheaper than say a Yank or a Precision Industries, but I'd be weary about an autozone one.  Good luck with it and good luck on the install, it's great to have friends too.  Lord knows I've used mine.

i helped a friend last week with his big bell C4. that wasnt the hard part. it was the friggin 2" primaries/3.5" collectors on a 351w based motor screwing me. and it gets worse. he has adpater plates on his TW heads to bolt a diag pattern header  on. you have to place your arm under the header with an open-end wrench to tighten/loosen the bolts!

well The Wise One (aka vinnietbird) has advised me that this cheapo converter will be alright.

Friday night if we get it done, I'll be going out rt. 20 a couple miles, into farm country, nice and late, no one there, and doing a 0-60 run. Don't worry you guys will hear from me in short order.

I will do a subsequent run after installing the fuel pump also, which will occur whenever I run out of gas :hick:. Ill probably also post the results in the "you NEED an H.O. fuel pump..." thread just as additional data supporting/countering that claim, whichever it does. im hoping it does the former!:D

right near Albany. My dad told me once that route 20 actually runs all the way to California, so obviously all through this state so that doesn't help you much :hick:

your location says Western New York so that right there is enough, you'd have a hike ahead of you to get here!
