hi i am puting a 302 in my 86 t bird.i cant decid on what cam to go with it is a 302 bord 40 over with flatop piston stock heads.i would like the loppy idle.
Carb or EFI?There's a lot of variables when you do this.Is there a reason you want a lopey idle other than the sound? With a lot of cam,you have to upgrade other things so it can do it's job right,or you're just doing a lot of work for nothing.
the stock one or an HO
well if you stay speed density you can't have a lopy idle. mass air conversion can take some lope. carb you can go as wild as you like. for the street on a carb you don't want more than 270* duration and keep your lobe centers around 112* lift go about .480". for a carb go with a holley list #0-80487 edelbrock performer intake and mildly ported e7te heads. headers and duals should put you better than 300 hp.
If you're running the stock SD set up with a HO computer I'd suggest the Comp 266HR cam (part# 35-308-8). It has 210*/215* duration @.050 and .533/.533 lift. The rpm range is 1,200-5,200. I have one and it has a bunch of low end torque and it winds out real nice. It has a bit of a loppy idle but it's not that bad. You will need stiffer valve springs though.
