Title: Questions??
Post by: cougar1car on May 07, 2007, 06:57:59 PM
I found a 88 xr7 for sale in my area the only problem is it states it needs new freeze plugs.

Heres what the ad says " 5.0 eng, new tires, needs new dash board & freeze out plug, incl everything needed, $800 invested, $1500  "

What work does this entail I know 1500 is not what I would pay for the car but any help on this would be appreciated.

Freeze plugs are probably 10-15$ for the kit to do the engine. If you can access them they are easy to replace, the exhaust and accessories may be in the way. I would want to know why they need to be replaced. They are designed to pop out if the engine coolant freezes to prevent damage to the block/ heads(cracks). A lot of times if they pop out there is internal engine damage also. Buyer beware!

Thats what i was thinking and also my 1st question was why did they pop out. But wanted to know process of replacing them. someone told me the motor has to be pulled and they have to be pressed in with a machine. I do all my own work but never dealt with freeze out plugs.

I don't think they need pressed in, honestly, I think it's a hammer job.  I'd wonder just how much of a dash it needs, though.  If it's just the top that's cracked, no big deal.  If wires are cut up, etc, then I'd stay away.

Spoke to the girl who owns the car she said first it dont need a new dash board. She took it out to replace the heater core and never put it back in. Freeze plugs she states from sitting over the winter they popped out after they started the car. It was going to be converted into a race car. i dont know im going to look at it on Wednesday.

That doesnt sound like a good sign for the engine. You should ask if they had antifreeze in it over the winter. Though if it is bad you could just do the H.O. conversion.

Looks like you need the harness from a cat/bird/stang and all the sensors too from a quick skim through

I'm with 88sportcoupe on this, I would suggest going into this as a car with a cracked block at the LEAST.

Not saying don’t buy the car, just saying EXPECT the block to be cracked when deciding what its worth to you. Some of the best deals on cars I have ever gotten have been deals like this.

I wouldnt pay anywhere near 1000 for it either unless it is completely rust free and the interior is in good shape.
