hyundias are cheap. but thats what i love about mine. i have a 99accent we baught new for like 8k. its got a 5speed and zero options, but it gets like 35mpg and churps 3rd lol. but seriously its simple, has nice warentee, and i dont mind getting it dented, scratched, and above all... nobody wants to steal it. i drive this every day except in the summer when i drive the bird once and a while

Dude, you haven't read his immense list of problems and money he's dumped into the car. Any mark 8 owner will tell you all the little quirks and quips with those cars. They're maintenance intensive and a PITA to keep up, sometimes. Cool car and a badass hotrod lincoln nonetheless.

Im a tech and work on it when needed but overall it's been a great reliable luxury car,less an 800.00 air bag here and there.I 'd seriously thought about buying one after my first bird went south but had so many spare parts that i decided to buy my current bird.
Sorry man to each his own i guess but being the die hard ford guy i am i'd rather push a ford than drive a hyundai.
I hope the manual helps, because the autostick GT I drove wasn't all that exciting. 2.7L DOHC V6 in a little Pininfarina designed coupe had promise, until I got on it. Tight little car, but anemic. good on gas though.

Well, if that is the case, then I just traded in the biggest piece of to ever come out off of an automobile assembly line and Shawn, I think you are the only person on this board that has actually ridden in my Mark 8 and long trips at that. I don't know how much you noticed about the Mark or how much anyone can notice unless they drive a car for a few days but there is no way I could even begin to compare quality between the Mark 8 and the Hyundai. First of all, read my thread and that will give you an IDEA of the headaches I had with that car. But to be fair, a comparison can only be made several years from now when the Tiburon is six years old with 75K miles on it. By that age, the Mark 8 already had a load of problems.
I feel that the build quality is not as good as Honda or Mazda but it is better than GM. However, do a search on the internet and find me a brand new "sporty" fully loaded top-of-the-line two-door leather six-speed V6 for a price of $17,900. And for those that doubt me, that $17,900 is BEFORE my trade and down payment so the financed amount is much less and even after all the payments, interest, down payment, and trade is added up, I still got the car for less than sticker.
Shawn, I just proof-read this and it sounds a little harsh but it wasn't meant to be. It also wasn't only directed at you but just used your quote as reason for my reply.
By cheap, do you mean inexpensive or a piece of ? My wife and I used to have a '93 Elantra that she bought used back when we were dating and I was in high school. She bought it in '95 with 24K miles on it for like $6K or something and we kept it until it had 132,000 miles. We took it with us to have while we lived in Iceland and I sold it for $2900 in December of 2001 just before I left to come back to this country. That car had one problem at about 100K, the idle-speed control motor and it cost about $125 to have it repaired at a service place.
I bought it the same day I posted the thread. I bought it during my lunch hour. But, yeah, it did take some balls to tell you guys I gave up a rear-wheel drive 280hp V8 Mark for a little front-wheel drive 172hp V6.
I created an excel spread sheet and factored in gas mileage, gas type and cost (premium Mark 8 vs. regular Tibby), insurance, upcoming repair bills, and the down payment for the new car and the Hyundai will cost me $2,000 less than the Mark 8 this year. Granted, if I spent that on the Mark, the following year may be cheaper but that Mark would have broken so many times, it wouldn't have been cheaper by much to fix AND maintain every year than the Hyundai will be to just maintain and make low payments on.
Now, this decision wasn't only about cost. I have three Cougars and a '92 Acura Integra that I am focusing my repair and mod attention to but I will say, I don't think the four of those add up to the cost and problems of the Mark and that's with doing a lot of the past Mark repairs myself. I had just gotten so tired of the Mark 8 constantly breaking and me spending the time screwing with it and having to fill the tires up every three days because the deteriorating wheels, I just got tired of it.
Believe me though, that Mark 8 is one of the nicest designs in the mainstream cars I have ever seen. It's a shame though that it's also the worst quality I have ever seen. I couldn't sell that car at KBB private-party "fair" value so the best I could do was KBB "fair" trade-in and that's what I got. I basically cut my losses. Because after this year, I would have had another $5,500 into it and then not only would it have cost me that, it would have cost me possibly another $500 if I wanted to trade it next year.
Well, I am taking it easy until I hit the 1,000-mile mark.
One thing I have noticed from reading the reviews is a lot of people like this car. One of their complaints though is the room in the back seat. I don't get it. That's like me buying a Miata and complaining there is not enough trunk space. You don't buy this car for rear seat room. The rear seat makes the insurance more affordable for you and an extra place to put bags and stuff.
from riding in your Mark (the carlisle trip, and going to WV), the car actually felt more solid than my fox's, and most cars ive driven, smooth, quiet, and a stable feel, but only what i could tell from the passanger seat
i wouldnt hold a single grudge against you for picking up the Tibby, because being into older cars (even hell, cars in the 90's are considered old now), you need a reliable daily driver so you can do what you want with your toys, if you have to constantly fix your drive, it takes priority and takes your funds away from your toys

his wasnt an LSC, but it was still a nice car, but it seemed every time i talked to him, there was a new problem with it, and he showed me much of the stuff replaced, and its not all fun stuff
Yeah, it's not an LSC but I doubt the problems discriminate between a 10hp difference in engines.
The 280hp engine was fine though. It would probably outlast the rest of the car.

Seriousleh.. if you feel you're better off without the maintenance headache of the other car, and feel that this new car better suits your needs, what does it matter what we say about it? We're not the ones who will be driving it for the next X number of years, or whatever. So all the ribbing in the world on here isn't going to (or shouldn't) matter much.
Personally.. while I may prefer Fords over other makes, and would attempt to modify my Fords to suit my purposes up to a point, I would not be against using a different (non-Chevy.. heh.. I do retain some prejudices) make of car IF I thought it made more sense to do that vs. trying to make my current cars fit a task they might not be as suited for. Hell, I'd even *consider* driving one of those Smart cars, as an extreme example, IF I was in a situation where I needed all efficiency and not much else. (like if I had a really good job in Tampa, but still had to live here in Port Charlotte.. which would make for an almost 200-mile round trip and almost all rural Interstate.. then I'd consider using something if it had a vastly improved highway mileage to my Birds)

I had an '04 for the better part of a week, and did enjoy driving it. It handled well, and looks hot. I mean, you can't go wrong with Ferrari designers.
It just seems like they put a lot of tech into an engine with far too little output. There's no reason that 2.7L DOHC V6 doesn't, at the very least, crack the 200hp mark. I mean, Honda squeezed 210hp out of their 2L iVTEC four pot. This thing should be able to spank the RSX.
Hey Karl, nice move. Having a car you have 100% confidence in, plus a manufacturer warranty, is priceless. Personally, i'm lucky enough to have a daily commuter I don't have to think twice about. If anything ever happened to my daily commuter, I wouldn't hesitate to sell of my T-bird and Cougar in order to get a newer car. Going to work, school, interviews, etc. without having to worry about old parts breaking is crucial (in addition, knowing that if they do break it won't cost me any money to get it fixed). I know you were also worried about the Mark's transmission taking a big on you, so kudos for avoiding that money pit.
My only question is, why a Tiburon? For $18k, I would have picked up a certified, used RSX Type-S. Not that i'm biased or anything :grinno:
I'm a little surprised you had that many problems with your Mark, I've had two and they had small probs, but their interior was always perfect. My current Mark (daily driver) I bought with 117k and its had almost nothing wrong with it, sans a radiator/alternator and rear ABS sensor.
But I like the Tiburons...and I'll buy a Hyundai before I'll buy a Honda or Toyota. :)
I have enough used cars. I wanted a new car with a BF warranty. Plus, there was a little impracticality in that I like the looks of the Tiburon over the RSX. RSX's are nice, but a brand new Tiburon with that BF warranty....
I will admit that after owning this Acura for the past two years and working on it (adding exhaust, sound system, etc), those cars just seem to be much better built than anything else I have ever worked on or driven. And it has 143K miles on it.
BUT, we had a Hyundai before so I have confidence in this one. Actually, so much so that I will begin selling them part time at the big-name dealer where I bought my Tib.
As for the Mark, this is the first car that I have owned, and hopefully the last, that doesn't have a typical set of known problems. Its problems lie between the front bumper and the rear bumper. I just didn't want to experience any more of that. What a shame. I really love the Mark 8 concept. It's one of the best mainstream concepts I have ever seen. Too bad it never made it from concept-quality to mainstream quality. I would probably have two or three of them.
it realy is a shame....it sounds like you got yourself a bad egg of a mark viii. mine never had any issues that i didnt directly cause myself. ive had neibors that had them with no problems. i wouldnt hesitate to buy another if i was in the market for a daily driver. hope the tib does what you need it to as well as keep you happy.
