Title: Diary of a TC...
Post by: Ether947 on February 13, 2007, 06:32:01 PM
I have gotten to the point where this car is no longer fun. And now I need to make a decision. Keep it, trade it (for a newer car), or sell it... and buy and another used car. Selling it is really not appealing as no one will pay for what I think it is worth. Especially with a decaying strut tower which is understandable. Which I didn't find out about until the engine was pulled. But I may try anyways.
I could use it as a trade-in, but I'll just get screwed by the dealer for some other POS that I probably won't want, not to mention I don't need the car payments right now with a possible mortgage coming right around the corner. Plus I don't want all those unique parts (FMS Specific Springs, Shock Mounts, RLCAs, etc...) to go to waste. I'd rather part it out before letting that happen.
Then there's keeping it... which in all likelihood I will do, as I just need to vent. All it needs to be streetable is exhaust, gas tank and tweaking a couple oil leaks and I'm in business. But that's just the bare minimum. I don't do bare minimum. The front control arms, front brakes, rear control arms and axle bushings all need to be replaced IMO. SFCs need to be installed and a couple other minor things before I can be happy. The strut tower is a concern, but it's a long way away from being a problem.
Maybe I'm coming down with cabin fever... I just need an above freezing weekend to drag this thing to cougarman's place and finish it up.
/rant
EDIT: I'm using this as my progress thread (oh noes, not another right?). It's easier than keeping up with a cardomain page.

Sounds like winter is getting to someone.
Is this thing your daily?

Look at it this way, if you get rid of it, your gonna miss it, and you maybe bored, but stick it out, work it up into something else. If its stock its not good enough.

know who you feel. wanted to sell my car while back when i did exaust/ floor shifter, while i froze my nuts off daily working on it and not making it anywhere if not moving backwards. it all works out for some time but then it will throw you another problem, like brakes/suspenion*cough*Cough*, but you have the love for these cars and when summer gets here the feeling of cruzin in a car that you know you won't see at the next stop light is wonderful.

Yeah, I'm not used to the winters up here yet. I've been staring at http://www.weather.com everyday pleading for 32*. I've been ignored.
It's "supposed" to be my daily. It's getting there. Slowly.

Trust me I know. We've only had 2 days over 20* the past couple weeks...and now we've had two good snows in a week's time...getting pounded right now actually....and then it's supposed to deep freeze again.
What sucks is Jan was mild....
Anyway, it all comes down to how badly you want it.

No garage what about a tent. http://www.equipped.com/tarp-shelters.htm
A construction scaffold and four tarps some bailing string or rope make a decent tent.
Finally to keep you warm check this out. http://industrialsavings.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=1100-80D&Category_Code=warmingpacks

Start buying what you know you need, and stockpile it until the weather is a little nicer.I'm starting from scratch (literally) with project "Pheonix'.I got the engine in,then the shocks, now the wheels and tires, heater core, one step at a time. When I look at the BIG picture of everything it needs,it's a bit overwhelming,so,I just do one thing at a time,no mateer what is,because every little item bought,or installed,is still one step close to the finished product.hang in there,go check stuff on E-Bay,look for some good deals, and make a plan. It'll happen if you want it to.

Just stick it out. Once the car is together, itll be a very rewarding drive. I hate the 2.3 issues i get, but once its running great, its worth it.

Go up to my "I just got my Cobra R's" thread and look at my 'Bird. It looks like A$$.I don't mind, though.I know it's going to come out of it in great shape.I installed the door locks, ignition tumbler and trunk lock yesterday. Not a big job, but,it is one step closer than I was.I think I'm going to go out and pull the interior panels and old seatbelts to make way fopr the replacemnt parts.

Dont sell if you do anything put it up like i did. I still catch myself wanting to drive the 87 again and kind of regretting buying the 99.

Stinger is selling 3-Inch tailpipes now (I think $90 Shipped) so I bought everything (minus the tip) from him. They seem to be selling like hotcakes. I was on backorder for about a week. I think I am going to get a couple ball-n-socket connectors to keep it... removable friendly.

I kno wi sound dumb here, but what is the difference between pass and driver side exit? Just where the tailpipe/tip comes out? Or am I missing some 2.3T detail here?

Ok, I'll be nice.....;)
You can either route the exhaust down the driver or pass side of the car. "Normally" on the 2.3T single it routes over to the driver side from the passenger side (Where the stock turbo outlet is). This routes everything just down the pass side and out a pass side tail pipe instead of a driver side one.

Sometime after next weekend... hopefully. I don't think the exhaust shop would like welding up an exhaust near a leaky gas tank.

Got all of my exhaust parts, got my ported E6 last week. Can't wait to get the whole setup installed. :D (http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i78/ether947/DSC02432.jpg)
Couple cheap gauges I picked up from eBay. They better work! (http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i78/ether947/DSC02435.jpg)
The following item has been so elusive for me. I have placed an order before and it never showed. I ended up having to cancel it after my 88TC was diagnosed with some serious cancer. But now it's finally in my hands and I can't wait to abuse it. xD (http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i78/ether947/DSC02436.jpg)
Look ma! no gas... on the ground. New gas tank!!! I need to paint it though... it's ugly. (http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i78/ether947/DSC02434.jpg)

I can see why the wheels were damaged. He was running a 245/35/18 tire. I looks too small for a 9-inch wide wheel. I'm going to get an estimate from Weldcraft (http://"http://www.weldcraftwheels.com/") to repair the lip and cut the wheels down to a more front friendly 8-inches. Also keep in mind that I am running a 1-inch spacer in the rear. That is why they stick out to the edge. I would imagine that removing the spacer an 18x10 wheel would fit no problem.

It shouldn't be that close. The pipe stays below the pinch weld on the tank. Honestly I wish it was a little closer to the tank for wheel/tire fitment. I'll get pics sometime this week.

Yeah I should be able to adjust one of the hangers and pull it up. If not I'll take it back. Gonna paint the exhaust black too. Or get some chrome wheels. xD
I also seemed to have developed some bumpsteer. I dread going over bumps, the car is all over the place. Hopefully the SN-95 parts will cure it.

Thanks.
Most 3-inch pipes seem to be designed to go around the tank more so than their smaller counterparts. So to answer your question, it wasn't intentional on my part. It also prolly looks exaggerated because of the bigger pipe.

Mine doesnt touch the cross brace thats near the lers, hangs almost perfectly level, and perfectly straight. The tailpipe i ran didnt fit for shiznit, but the tip came out straight.
I dont know if its the pics, or just me being a pessimist, but it seems like i got it to fit better.

Post by: Ether947 on March 15, 2007, 07:04:13 PM
The pipe doesn't touch the cross-brace. I kinda looks like it in the pic I guess. As for the tailpipe, he put a 10* bend in so it wouldn't run into the bumper. He obviously over bent it, which is my only complaint. But everything else is tucked in nice and neat. My only complaint from Stinger is that the DP hangs too low. If I had to do it all over again I would of had them cut the DP and tuck it in some more.
Also keep in mind that the rear of the car is on jackstands and the pic was taken at an angle as well.
Here's a couple quick pics of the newly painted wheels. I had to finish this before the weekend because I am going to lose some borrowed tools. (http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i78/ether947/DSC02480.jpg) (http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i78/ether947/DSC02482.jpg)

The wheels look sweet. The thing i definatly dont miss with my black snowflakes is that the tires never look as black or as clean as the wheels themselves. I had to tireshine the hell out of them to keep them looking remotely as nice as the wheels

Looks like someone used a brass bristle wire wheel on it to clean it up.
Hows the shaft play?
Shaft play is minimal. I would say out of the four turbos I've had, it is the second best. I just hope I can find another SVO housing...

If not, pull out the die grinder.

That looks like it may just do the trick.

So the adapter didn't work... it was too tall. Oh well, I'm sure someone with a front mount could make use of it.

Guess not... I try the old fashioned way.
Just about everything is installed and got her fired up. The alignment is all wacky so we didn't take her for a test drive. Sorry, pics are from my phone. I was trying to directly upload from my phone.
Cougarman and friends fixed the tailpipe. w00t! (http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i78/ether947/exhaust_tip.jpg)

Dual Piston Calipers (FYI, they require grinding for install on 96-98 Spindles) (http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i78/ether947/pbr_calipers.jpg)

Woo-hoo! Cougarman is da MAN!!!! Dood, you need to open up a shop. The car is sweet! So much has been done I don't know where to begin. It handles nice and firm now thanks to the new(er) control arms all around. No more clutch crickets! One of my favorite fixes. The Forge BPV sounds pretty sweet. It's not a whooooosh like the BOV. More like a pop. Not loud, but definitely audible. The T-3 is VERY audible. It just loves to sing it's song down the road. Love it! Tomorrow is going to be a fun day. Gonna turn up the boost a little bit (running 10psi now), and she what she can do.
These MegaBite arms are a little unsettling which you let off the throttle at high speeds. The car shifts it's weight back (or at least that's what it feels like) and it's kinda scary. I'm hoping that changing them to the 85% setting will reduce or eliminate this.
The PBR dual-piston calipers definitely haul the car down. I don't think I have ever had a car brake this good. It's a welcome change over before. Which wasn't bad, it's just wasn't great either.
The MGW Shifter (not just the handle) is a nice! Anybody that says this is shorter that stock is crazy. I recommend getting one for your 5-speed. You won't be disappointed.
I'm still at work (making up those hours I missed to pick it up), so no pics. It needs a bath pretty badly though.

Glad to hear she's running good. everything looks good. Well, everything except the wheels. I don't like the tri-bars or the other triangle mustang wheel for that matter. I guess I'm just a fan of the good 'ol fashioned 5-spoke. Those things permanent? Other than that though, the exhaust looks good blacked out like that.

Antonio, turn that boost up to 18psi. Youll have a little fun, and be suprised how different the car is. Itll sound so much different under boost, and when it spools, itll spool hard and probably startle you the first time.
Also, hop on ebay, get one of those cheapo cold air for a 5.0 mustang. With some tube tpuppies, and two 3" hump hoses trimmed down, you can make it fit rather nice and tight, and putting the filter in the fender makes a very suprising difference. Not to mention, if you think the turbo is loud now...youll have a pleasant suprise.

Wow. I was not expecting that. Even at 10 psi it spools harder than before. Way harder. I didn't romp on it too much as my son was in the car, but this thing flies now.
Now if I can just shake this fuel leak I'll be golden.

You think it pulls hard at 10psi? With a good fuel pump, nothing less than a 255lph high pressure pump, youll never run out of fuel potential. Im running 22psi out of a Precision SC50, and i dont have a single fuel issue.
Crank it up man, youll have a blast.

Shawn, what intercooler couplers and clamps are you running? Mine keep blowing off at 15psi. I need to put a lip on the compressor housing as well, but I have had enough of these.

Im using the stock upper, and a section of truck radiator hose for the lower. Im using regular worm gear clamps, but i use a 1/4" drive ratchet and 5/16's socket to tighten them. I tighten them untill theyre snug, and yeah, theyll deform a bit.

Well the fun is over. My fan died and I don't believe my boost gauge anymore. The more I unscrew the adjustment , the more pressure it reads. The turbo doesn't seem to be spooling as hard so I'm not sure what the problem is.
I got to call it a day, I'll check it out tomorrow.

Well I got bored at work so I went home early... well, earlier that usual. Went straight to work on the TC. The 255 pump is already in so all I just needed to do was tie up some loose ends and she fired right up. I thought for sure I screwed up the cam timing after taking the cam gear off a dozen or so times.
As soon as my fan motor shows up *cough* 84.... Fila *cough* and a few other odds and ends she'll be done.
Here's a pic. (http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i78/ether947/camgear.jpg)

Yay! She runs great. I think I even gained a pound of boost. But my lag has increased as well. So far, no more gas leaks after replacing the plastic lines. No more rubbing after pulling the fenders out. No more worrying about flipping a switch to turn the fan on. No more idle drop when turning the headlights on. One less fire hazard for me. About the only other negative is that I'm leaking oil out of the dipstick tube now. Guess I better order that catch can setup ASAP.
