Ok the newer v6 rangers have the ford taurus v6 in them right? Does anyone know if a taurus SHO motor would bolt in to one of those rangers? Cause i can pick up a SHO with a blown trans for like 2-300 bucks, and if i could make a nasty ranger with it id love to, at least with the v6 it would have good gas milage, i could have my mustang for fun, and the summer, and the ranger for winter. Thanks guys
The short answer is no. I'm about 90% sure that the V6 SHO (89-95) engine and trannies were completely exclusive. I think Chuck can chime in with a better answer than that, though.
i know the trans on it was different, but i think the short block was the same, and yamaha only re did the top end of the motor. I could be wrong, and yea im waiting for chuck, cause i know hes been working with a sho engine
I think the shortblock was completely different - the regular Taurus engine was a pushrod 3.0 "Vulcan" V6 (same as Ranger), while the SHO was a DOHC V6.
The V6 SHO uses the Vulcan bell pattern...
so a sho motor would bolt to a 5 speed ranger trans? would i have to fab up motor mounts? and would the harness plug in? thanks for the input so far
It is not going to be a drop in.
Yes you can get a RWD trans to bolt up, but there's going to be alot of fab work to get it into the engine bay, everything pointing the correct direction and getting it all hooked up.
shiznit if i can get it in the i got no problem. i have 2 and a hlaf years left to high school, and im gonna go to wyotech. Building shiznit is what i do. Now i just need to get the sho take what i need, and part it out, buy a ranger and begin, one more question, would the sho rims bolt to the ranger? cause the sho has 2 brand new yokahama tires, and it would be ince to trhow those rims on the truck
No..the wheels will not fit.
thats a bummer, now how old can i go on the ranger? cause i can get older ones around my house for cheap, sry for so many questions, i know a bunch about cars but not everything
Questions is how you learn. Why not just take the tires off and put on the truck wheels? Or are they different wheel sizes?
the sho wheels are WIDE and i really don't think the stock rangers wheels are anywhere near the correct size, and questions are how ive been learning for 16 years, cars are my passion, and one thing i get alot of enjoyment from
Thats why you belong here. How WIDE are they? I'm just running "small" 225-60-15's on 10 holes for my car. You talking 8" or wider?
225/55-16
i think thats the size
ranger size
195/70-14 in 1990 which i am looking into a 1990 ranger with a junk motor for 350$
and yes thats why i joined this forum, cause theres knowledgeable people that are nice, and help out people like me who are still learning about stuff
Rangers are 4 bolt right?
And I take it the SHO's are 5
rangers are 5 lugs and yes sho's are 5
ok after some searching i see that the 1990 ranger didn't not have a 3.0 l v6, so i have to find a 1991 i guess, and im guessing im gonna have to fab headers, unless the 3.0 rangers fit on the sho
The Ranger's 5-bolt wheels are the traditional 5-on-4.5" pattern (same as Mustang). The SHO used the 5-on-4.25" pattern (same as MN12 T-Bird/Cougar). The 2.9 Ranger tranny should have the same bell housing as the 3.0 (I'm sure Chuck could verify whether this is right or wrong)
o ok good, cause i don't wanna buy a newer one cause its gonna cost me more money, i just want a project/sleeper. Something to keep me busy and out of trouble. Plus the experience of fabing up everything would be great, since automotive is the field i wanna go into
so i could pick up some mustang rims swap the tires and stick them on possibly?
2.9 = Cologne
3.0 = Vulcan
Not the same...
so it has to be a 3.0l ranger, or i see that theres was a 4.0l is that also a different pattern? thanks chuck i appreciate your input
4.0 = Cologne
k so a 3.0l it is thanks a million
am i gonna be getting in over my head with this one lol
If you want some 16" Mustang wheels to put the SHO's tires on, you could pick up some of those 16x7 "base" 5-spoke GT wheels that came on the '99-04 GTs (not the 17 inchers)
A FWD block will not bolt into a RWD application without major surgery. Im pretty sure the oil pan will not clear the crossmember, there isnt a oil pan that will bolt on, so you are going to have to fab one. Go to the SHO boards, this topic has been beat to death, I think there is one known RWD SHO running around and that was a couple years and alot of money in the making.
Once you see how much it costs to keep there engines running, that alone will scare you off.
Possibly?
From the sound of it you're looking at wiring, headers or manifolds that will work, intake, etc.
Will the ranger clutch fit the SHO's flywheel and vice versa?:dunno:
lol it sounded good at first, the more i look at the ranger motor, theres no room in there, which is y i wanted a older one, less shiznit in the way. Looks like im gonna get me a older 2.3 ranger, and just throw my bird motor in it, should be eaiser lol thanks for the imput guys, i don't think i can undertake this much fab at 16 lol
sry i wasted u guys time lol
There are more than that.
There are at least 2 Merkur XR4's with SHOs in them on the east coast.
...
And sooner or later there will be one in a T-Bird in IN :hick:
I had always thought the Cologne and Vulcan engines were related and shared a bellhousing pattern. In fact, I had thought the 4-cyl had the same bellhousing bolt pattern too (but found out otherwise when I was considering a 2.3t Ranger). Learn something new every day...
I have all 3 sitting in my garage. The Cologne/2.3 are close, but not quite...and the starters are on different sides of the engine... The Vulcan is nothing like the others.
My big issue on the SHO swap right now is room.....I can get the SHO and the T-5 together, but need to get them mocked up in something.....and just don't have the room at the moment to do it.
turns out the ranger i was looking at is a 4cyl 2wd anyway, now if i can convince my mom, ill make it mine, and do a 2.3t swap
I havent been a regular on the SHO boards for over 4 years. The SHO was a great concept and a good effort, but its just to finicky for a DD for me.
I found out the hard way on the tranny differences with my 90 2.9L w/5spd Ranger 4X4. I had been given a 3.0L w/5spd from a 91 Ranger to put into my p/u. The problem was, the 3.0L/5spd was a 2wheel drive. In my hurry to get the truck up and running, I tried to install the 3.0 without double checking myself and ended up trading the 3.0 combo for another 2.9L engine. Now I just need to get another 4X4 trany to replace mine that has gone south. Rather hard to find a good Mazda 5spd.
Sorry for the hi-jack
John
yeah, putting a turbo 4 seems less common than throwing a v8 in it. Hopes all goes well.
I plan on doing a 4.0 transplant and 5 speed manual swap hopefully this summer, along with a d35 and an 8" rear. But depends on the money.
Was going to do a v8 swap (Reason for the Cougar purchase) but decide not to.
There are quite a few 2.3T running around at RPS (http://"www.rangerpowersports.com"). I'm planning on swapping my 2.0 out for one.
id love to do the swap, if my mom would let me get the truck, i want a sleeper, no one around my house has anything with real balls, so after a few mods, that truck would MOVE, she gave me a choice, drivers ed, or truck its a hard choice
