Hello,
As stated in one of My past message, I rebuilted My '85 Bird in 2000 for My mother, after 4 years sitting in the grass, buried under the snow, ect, ect, she donated to Me in May 2005, the engine was sic a bit, and the paint was very very damaged, but the body not very very rusted, last year I rebuilted the 232ci from A-Z, new coils on 4 wheels, and brand new single exhaust, full equipped the car, and just buffed the body, but no miracle with the paint...
Last week I jackstanded the car, removed all the wheels, and Friday after the lunck I started to work seriously on My car, removed tail lights, rear bumper cover, grinded some areas where the car is rusted, not a lot, but the driver side rear fender is so damaged (picture #1)around the wheel from the top to the bottom rear I cutted around 1", I'll repair with a form from a front fender (I guess i'll fit), or mold My own section, I'll finish this today (saturday), I guess:hick:
Same thing for the passenger side rear fender (pic #2), but repairable with pure lead (like 40's and 50's body jobs), it's tough to do, but make a very good job.
I removed the rear bumper cover (pic #3) just to sandblast and repaint the bumper frame with a black tremclad, removed the interior of the trunk too, and grind it/sandblast it, and paint with a black tremclad too...
I shoot the tremclad with My primer gun, an old DeVilbiss JGA-502 with a #30 tip, 80% tremclad and 20% gas, at 75psi.
I'll post some other pics of the bodywork if You want to see;)
Have a nice Day,
Wow,you jumped in head first !!! Keep us posted on the progress.Once I start the work on the sport,I'll do a before during and after with it.Good luck my friend. It looks like you're on the right track.
Hello Vinnie!,
It's time to start, we are the January 20, and the spring coming so fast, I not started working on the Bird before because I don't have a lot of job to do on the body, doors are nice, front fenders too, in reality it's just the rear quarters, and the portion between the back glass and the trunk lid, this f!ck!n part was rebuilted in 2000, but the finition is peeled, and some little rust on that portion, I hate to work here:beatyoass: .
after the back of the car, I'll repair My damaged (bumped a lot) TC hood, not rusted, but some stupid walked and danced on, This is easy to repair, but need a loooong finition...
After all of this, I'll remove the front fenders, the hood, the header panel and front bumper cover, brush or sandblast the front end support and black tremclad it, and reinstall all BUT I found a TC bumper cover to install My oem ford foglights:D .
After the car have all the chrome trims removed, keys, door handles, I'll prime it completely, and wait on april to sand for the last time with a #600 grit, and new paint finally:hick: :hick: :hick: ...
Between the bodywork finished, I'll make My dual exhaust, and install all new cables for the emergency brake.
The only thing I'm not already decided is the kind of paint I'll shoot on it, a base coat/clear coat, or an acrylic enamel with a clear, I guess I'll do the paint with a base coat, but if the money don't want, I'll shoot with an acrylic...
This winter the paint is My priority because I hate My bird with the paint burned by the sun, matte and crackled, eerk!...
But this summer the Bird will shine a lot:D ...
Have a nice Day...
My Sport project has py paint also.It was a gold color, then repainted another gold color which is also peeeling of.Once the better weather gets here,I'll start sanding and getting it ready for paint.I want to swap all of my parts into it first, like my H.O engine, etc.I don't want to risk scratching new paint up with all the parts that will be going on.Mine is going to be an orangy copper color.I've seen it a lot on some of the new GM cars. It's a burnt orange almost with metal flake.really nice.
Hello Vinnie !!!,
Wow, I like the color You say, and YES, do all mod's or other swap BEFORE painting the car, and when he have a clean new paint, it's always a kind of mistake to scratch it, on a py paint it NEVER arrive heheeheh!...
Mine will be dark blue metallic (strong metallic, My own code), I have no choice cauz My Bird is a medium blue interior, it's a great code it look purple a bit at the night, very good...
I purchased another 4 eye Bird in October at the Junkyard for $600 bucks, the V6 has a blown gasket, the interior is a kind of gold, the exterior gold too, the body was NEVER repaired or repainted, absolutely NO rust in this F!ck!n car, I'll just change the head gasket, repair some things to pass inspection to get on the road again...
This is My second project, I'll full equip like My '85, rebuild the engine, ect, ect, and I'll paint BLACK, this is My next winter project, two birds in My basp00get garage, eheheheh!...
OH!, finally, I just come from auto parts to buy a finishing putty, some sandpaper, glazers, ect, and asked to the clerk for a base coat paint for My code, $850.00 FORGET IT!!!!:beatyoass: , I'll paint acrylic, 5 quarts, plus hardener, plus diluter, $285.00, It's okay for Me and My budget too:hick:
Okay, I'll go to the garage to work on the car, some others pics soon:D
Have a nice Day!...
Have fun with the hood. That is one reason I have taken so long to paint my TC hood. The rear driver side corner was bent over and the skin seperated. I work in a Body Shop, so I have time and supplies to work on it. I have put a total of 8(two 4 coat applications) coats of primer, and hand-sanded it with 400 twice after I ground the dents down and filled them. Im finally to the point where i should just have to sand it down once more with some 400, clean it and spray it. Good job so far on the rust repair.
I only have 3 things on the body of my Sport to address. One,the right front fender on the lower front ir rolled under just a tiny bit, hardly noticeable, but,I'm going to replace it (it would take longer to fix it than to just replace it).The second spot,is a little dent on the upper right rear fender.Looks like a golf ball hit it,hard.I'll hammer it out and then the last spot,is the lower right rear fender, below the trim, looks like someone sed it up against something.A little time hammering and a little filler, all will be good. The TC hood i bought is in need of paint, but has no dents at all.The interior is where the work will be.The headliner is totally shot (the board is good though),the seats are all leather and tore up bad,the carpet probably has a couple of gallons of dried soda and whatever the previous owner spilled on it.The dash has cracks.I made a deal with Dashcovers USA for one of there overlays.I'm in the process of cleaning what I can and replacing everything else.I really want to keep the tan interior, but I'd have to literally replace everything. The seats, kickpanels, rear side panels, inner door trim and door panels.I'm looking for a ocal car that can donate it's interior, otherwise,it's going to all be swapped out with the Raven interior in my daily driver.Time will tell.Seems like a lot of us are rebuilding cars from scratch.Nice to have company.
I'll go working on the hood just after this message, I don't hate repairing a hood, top or another large surfaces, The only thing I hate from a repaired hood, is keeping in mind don't slam!, Mine is not detached from the "frame", just worped on the driver side and a the hood frame is bent too, I'll redress the frame, and after that I'll grind all bumped/worped area, and plastic filler time:D
The part I hate to repair on My bird is between back glass and the trunk lid, I repaired in 2000, and some little surface rust come out, I hate to work here:beatyoass:
Here's a pic of My bird with the hood bumped and worped...
I'll post a pic of the hood before and after in a couple of hours:hick:
NOTE the big guardian inside My car, DON'T TOUCH the car heheheh!..
VINNIE !!!,
Your car don't need a big body work, it's a half Day job maybe :-), For Your hood, You probably paid Your a lot more mine ($10.00), I searched a lot a TC hood in Quebec, and nothing, except this damaged hood...
I changed My headliner last winter, mine was totally s, the foam was like a caramel, I purchased an headliner from a Cougar '88 from a JY for 5$, (red), and painted gray with a fabric spray paint, and look great.
I finally finished the bodywork on My Bird, the only thing to do again is sanding the finition putty, 1st layer, and sanding some spots on the 2nd layer, and sanding the whole car, I'll sand the whole car only a couple of day before paint...
I repaired the driver side fender Yesterday, I cutted a front fender of a '87 bird 2 inches over the wheel and welded (with a mig) on My quarter, this make a perfect piece without a job to make My own...
Pics #1 and 2 Left side fender on a 1st layer of a finishing putty, It look better than the 1st pic I posted in My first message of this thread:hick:
3rd pic is a shot of the front fender I cutted the piece to repair My rear fender...
And YES Vinnie, it's fun to talk with another guy's working on the body of his car, I'm not the only on this earth eheheh!!!...
Next message, a pics of the hood before and after repaired:hick:
Finally the hood is finished, good worpes on the left side and a kind of bump like axe on the center left, this taked around 2hours to repair, and a near a quart of plastic filler, I'll sand the finishing putty in a couple of weeks on the hood and around the car, cauz I'm lost of primer, between I purchase another gallon of primer, I'll do something on the car, like My TC bumper (I just won one on ebay for $49.99:hick: ), and another tricks like that...
Pic #1 hood on plastic filler...
Pic #2 and #3 Hood on a finishing putty...
AH! I found what I do on the car until I have My primer, sanding with resin #40 grit the f*ck!n gravel guard on the bottom of the car:beatyoass: , I hate this a lot:mad:
Heres the pics:D
Some others soon...
vinny that paint i believe ur talking about is called copperhead, stacy david made that color for his project on the show trucks, and chevy addopted it as one of there colors, it was what i was gonna do on my stang, but im not having no gm color on my car f that, gloss black for me
Looking good Maniac :headbang: :headbang:
Hello,
Thanks for the good words, but I'll be happy only this spring when the car will be on the road again, Yessssssssssssssss!!!:hick:
Have a nice Day,
Dom.
Now You talk!, I like the black cars, I guess I'll paint My bird black, but with blue interior ehhhhhhh!...
The stangs like Your it's amazing in black with a shiny chrome, But look well too in fire red, boss 302 yellow, orange, or apple green...
My first choice is for BLACK as well:hick:
I'll remain with an update (pics)on My bird when I'm not too drunk to work on it (I have a big family trouble here, so I drink to slow down the pressure) anyway!.
Regards, Dom.
Last layer of finishing putty!...
Just finished the last layer of finishing putty on the Bird, here's a 3 pics of the job,
#1: Right Rear fender.
#2: Left Rear fender.
#3: The TC hood ( bumped hood!):beatyoass:
After that, I'll sand with 220 grit, prime 2-3 layer, and sand with 320 grit, Some other little bumps on the cars, and little rust spots not showed here, cauz not important...
Woops!, refinishing the part at the bottom of the back glass and the trunk, I hate this part:beatyoass:
After finished this, redy to paint, I'll change My bumper cover for a TC bumper cover, removing the front fenders too, clean all non visible parts, paint in black (tremclad), and reassemble the front of the car.
In the LAST I'll sand with a #80 resin grit the :beatyoass: Gravel guard at the bottom of the car, and sand the car completely ready to paint :hick: :hick: :hick: .
Have a nice Day,
Dom.
Almost finished...
pic#1 front fender bumbed finished repair...
Pic#2 Left Rear fender finished (the big rotted one in a pic on another post).
Pic#3 Right rear fender finished too...
For the rest of the car, it's only a couple of minors bumps here and here, nothing to post here...
After the lunch, I'll remove all of the chrome trims around the car, all the interior seats, all keylocks, ect, ect, and finish the TC hood...
This week I'll seal the rear fenders by the interior, repaint the entire bottom of trunk, sandblast the sufrace rust under the doors and prime it, remove the drivers front fender to found where is the water leak, remove the front bumper cover to install the TC front I'll probably receive around Feb 15, remove the little silver stripes around the car, remove mirrors, door handles, and sanding the car all around with a 180 and 320 grit, then two entire layers of prime on the Bird...
Here's the pics "Daboss351":hick:
Have a nice Day,
Dom.
My car is gonna be black, with black vinyl top, and black interior, and brushed aluminum rims. its gonna be saweet
Hi,
What car, the stang or a fox car???, personally I love the black old stangs, black interior too, My Mercury cyclone was black and blsck interior too, Unfortunately My Bird is dark blue interior, and With a black exterior I'll guess i'll hate this, so, I'll repaint dark blue metallic (Ford 1990 code B2)...
Well, I'm tired, I totally disassembled the Bird, all the chrome trims, locks, int door panels, back seats, I'll pull out the front seats tomorrow (due to My back pain), and I'll remove the drivers side front fender cauz I have a water on the floorpan and in the rocker panel...
It's not at the bottom of the windshield, not upper firewall area, I'll guess I'll found when the front fender will be out!!!...
Now, I'll take a couple of pills for My back and go back on the tv to relax a bit...
Best regards,
Dom.
my fox bird is dead lol, the frame rail rotted, and was used for the interior parts, and trans in my dads new silver one, and the body is well past saving, so the motor is going into a ranger. And yea thats what im doing to my stang its my baby. Your doing a awesome job, and its coming out great, can't wait to see it done, and got any pics of the metallic blue it was?
Nice work so far! Keep us posted on your progress.
I can't wait until I tear into the body on my '86 and get it prepared for paint.
It's not repairable???, cauz the unibody cars like the fox birds/cougar it's so easy to repair, but if the floorpan is rotted a lot too, leave for the parts, it's noty rare enough to repair VERY damaged 83-88 birds/coug's, for Your stang it's another thing, I rebuilted one over 20 years ago when I worked in a body garage, changed the front of the stang (69 or 70 Mach 1) complete, firewall included, it was a big job, but the mach one like this was very rare 20 years ago, Your stang too...
The next pics I'll post of My car is when I'll all on the grey primer with the TC bumper...
So, I removed the drivers front fender this evening, and found WHERE the water leak was, I'll go to repair this just after this post, and put out the front seats to clean and paint the floor, and dry the backing of the carpet (it's wet a bit)...
I'll probably remain with a pics of before and after of the rotted parts where the water leak was...
Best regards,
Dom.
Thanks for the good words, I made My possible, but I started in a bodywork at age of 13, I have 42 now!, but I'm a bit pissed off to do the bodywork, It's cauz it's My car and a job of over 5k to do in a garage, and I dont trust anyone in a body shop except some real good places, bit it's a bit rare...
And NO, don't wait t'il Your car start to rust or rotted here and here, it's 20 times work then a clean body to do...
My bird was very clean in 2000 when I repaired for My mother, but the car sitted from 2001 to 2005 since he donated to Me, in the grass under a tree over the home, the car started to rust here...
I'll never drive the bird on the winter again, garaged in My heated basp00get since I have, like My 1970 Mercury Cyclone in 80's and 90's, so the Bird will still clean, and never do a body job again on that car...
Have a nice Day,
Dom.

thats her in her sad shape. The 5 speed has already been taken, the inside has been riped apart, and it has had major panel swaps to make it half way solid. In order to repair the damage on the frame, id have to pull the motor and all the front suspension, cut the whole side out, and put a new one in. THEN, fix the rest of the cancer, rebuild the ENTIRE inside, and get a new trans. I can't see it being worth it, cause its gonna cost mega money, so the parts are being saved for this one.
my dads third one, the firs one was the black one, factory duals, 5 speed, and thats IT, it was about as basic as you could get and i LOVED it. That could MOVE, it had a few camaro kills in its day. The silver one has not near as much power, its quite tired. That motor in the black one its gonna live tis life in a 1990 ranger when i find one. I hate to rip the last pieces of life from it, but i don't want that motor to go to waste, cause the white cars motor is in the silver car, cause the silver car had a NASTY knock, and a junk turbo. One day i WILL have another t/c. Im a avid car person as you can tell, not the type of person, thats gonna strip it for a fox body stang. I would have loved to save it, i was gonna drive it instead of my stang. I was gonna build that motor from bottom to top. I was shooting for mid 300 hp, i wanted a beast, but sitting in the grass for 3 years just had to much negative effects on it, it really is a shame, it was clean only had one section with dents on it when we bought it, and like i said it had balls, and when that turbo spooled up, and thats all you could hear OMG, i loved that car. Blue interior on black, it looked sweet(just paint yours black it looks good)
The stang has floor pans, and all the black panels on the car are NOS. i have 2 more new NOS fenders for it, a door, a hood, front and rear valences, a windshield, and back window. My dad got everything he found for that car just in case, and its SOLID right now, there is NO rot and im gonna keep it that way.
Yes! now You talk, a LOT of spare parts, I do this for the Bird too, and was the same thing for the Cyclone, it's correct too, the "just in case" parts will be help You a LOT and save a lot of PAIN when the "just in case" comes...
For a '66 it look straight, okay, it was rotted, but not now, and well maintained this car is good for another 50 years...
Best regards,
Dom.
Problem Found, and..... SOLVED!!!.
Okay, I found this evening where are the water leak on My car, thus caused the carpet will watered in a rainy days, After the lunch, around 19h00 I started to repair the rotted parts, and repaired the leak...
Tomorrow I'll just shoot a good layer of "gravel guard" on the repaired area...
Pic#1: Grinded and rotted area, and a arrow where the leak was...
Pic#2: Repaired areas, just need a layer of gravel guard to seal at 100%.
For the bottom I used some steel 1/8 rivets and a MIG, for the middle rotted area, I just sandblasted, and filled with fiberglass premix, I not wanted to try to solder here with Mig cauz it's completely under the dash and the risk of fire was very high, a fiberglass premix and a good seal inside and outside with the gravel guard gun will be okay...
For the area where the water comes, I was just have the triangular hole (where the arrow in the 1st pic) to put a tole here, I sandblasted the entire area with the sandblaster gun, and I just putted a #20 gauge tole here, with just two tacks of Mig, It's rough enough to weld here, after that I sealed with fiber tar mix, shooted with a gravel guard gun at 140psi, I guess all area under these small area will be sealed, due to splash of the tar/fiber mix shooted at 140psi...
Tomorrow after the final seal with gravel guard, I'll wait around an hour, and pour this section with a water with a hose, and check under the dash, I guess I'll not see any leaks:D
Here's the pics...
Happy halloween :hick: ,
Dom.
glad you found it and got it fixed, now that i look at the pics of my black car it doesn't look as bad as it is. And yea im VERY particular when it comes to keeping something that i enjoy nice, shiznit i bought a 1973 honda motorcycle. I ride it all the time, tune the carbs almost every time i ride it, check the oil, and i only run royal purple in it:hick: costs me 20 dollars to do a oil change on it, and its only hold 2 quarts, but i know its getting the protection is needs.
Hello,
Well maintaining a vehicle is the key to have a trouble free car/motorcycle or whatever, since I rebuilted My Bird engine last year, I run with a full synthetic oil ($75 for 5 quarts and a filter), and unless I run 1k or 5k, I'll change the oil and filter, same for My truck, I run with a 10w30 winter, and 20w50 summer, and I change the oil/filter at every 2-3k, for that the engine of My truck run well at 300k, the compressions is around 150psi +- 5psi at each cylinders, so This summer I'll remove the oil pan, change all cranks inserts, and a new melling oil pump, the rest of the engine is okay, cauz I don't take any oil and not base compression, and no valve seals problems, this is the result of a well maintained vehicle...
So, I'll go to the car quest just after this message, to grab some quarts of gravel guard, some underbody coating too, and a kit to rebuilt My PAINT gun, cauz, I guess this month I'll paint all non visible areas of the bird, door interiors, floorpan, trunk lid interior, under the hood, ect, ect, My other gun is just for a primer...
It cost Me again near 100 bucks today, after all coating applyed on the repaired area, I'll reinstall the front fender...
I hope I receive My TC front bumper cover atbthe end of the week, or the next week to install that on the car, Yessssssss!!!:hick: :hick: ...
Okay, I'll go at the auto parts now...
Have a nice Day,
Dom.
So you gonna do it black now, like i said you should?
Hello,
I like the blacks cars, Most of My vehicles was black, BUT My bird is medium blue interior, and I'll guess I don't like black and blue, I'll paint dark Blue metallic, same as the paint I do in 2000, Ford code B2 1990...
Well, I shooted My gravel guard and undercoat on the repaired areas, putted a water hose on a trap just beside the left wiper shaft, and opened the water for a good hour, and no water leak:hick: :D ...
I'm not sleeped correctly last night and sleeped only 5 hours, I'm pissed off, and don't work again on the Bird for today, I just reinstalled the front fender, that's all, Tomorrow I'll remove the inner plastic under the right fender to clean and paint/underguard this non visible area, unbolt My front bumper cover, and pull out, when I receive the TC front bumper, I'll just to reinstall and make a brackets (if needed) for the white fogs, the set I have it's from a 86 bird (hella) purchased last year on ebay for around $50 bucks, with a bit of harness with it...
I'll post a pics when the tc bumper will be installed, between this I'll post some pics of the job in the car...
Have a nice Day,
Dom.
I like my bird(it was black and blue) should look good with the blue though. Glad you got the leak fixed, and sorry to hear your in a bad mood. Im in a good mood, i got a raise, now one the days i can work, im gonna be making 10 bucks a hour, in cash. And im signed up for drivers ed.
I was have two cars I painted in black with a different interior color, one was a '74 Meteor with brown interior, Ishhhh!, I dont liked the look, the other was a '74 Marquis with the same interior blue of My bird, and I don't liked enough the look of My Marquis to paint the Bird in black...
If it was red, gray or gold interior, OKAY, but with blue I see this like a color mismatch, so I dont take a chance and paint the bird dark blue met...
Have a nice Day,
Dom.
FINALLY, I choosed the exact paint code for My Bird, and purchased a quart to paint the under trunk, under the hood, and all non visible areas...
Here's a two shots of the paint I shooted fast, non cleaned, just over the grill and behind the front grill...
The paint is a LIMCO II (Basf/RM) acrylic, same as Miracryl of RM 25 Years ago...
Pic#1: Close-up
Pic#2: Larger pic
I choosed the best pictures I taken, and do the REAL color, or very near the reality, it's not evident to take a pic of this...
Have a nice Day,
Dom.
I like it allot, I wanted a blue metallic on my car, until i painted my motorcycle blue metallic i wanted something different
This blue is very similar of the blue I used in 2000 when I painted for My mother, it's a bit lighter of the old paint, but the metallic "force" is the same...
A Friend of Me have a 67 stang (very same as Your stang) with a 289 in it, and he painted his stang blue metallic (like My truck, Ford 3B), It's an horror, thrust Me, I don't like...
The old stangs look good with a non metallic paint, and like White, black, Yellow, red, light blue, orange, ect, but with a metallic blue like My bird You will regret for SURE...
Same thing for the BIG cars vs little cars like a firefly, the big cars look great with a "serious" metallic, and the little buzzers look good with a "tonka" colors...
Have a nice Day...
Dom.
yea black is the way to go for me like henry ford said "You can have it in any color, as long as its black."
Hahahhaahhah!, yes, it's true:hick: , I like the black cars, as stated in one of My older messages, I painted in black most of My Fords, except 2-3, I'll liked My bird in black, but cauz the interior is blue, I'm sure I'll regret, I played safe with the same dark blue metallic, I'm sure I'll like...
If I decided to paint the bird in black, and the mismatch with the int and ext color bug me, I'll repaint immediately, another over $400 bucks for nothing, and changing color is a big job...
When I purchased the bird I have for My mother in 2000, the car was medium blue NON metallic, when I decided to paint with a night blue met, I removed all trims and whatever on the car, this is only to do it was always this color, This week I made the same thing, I removed all trims, and whatever You want, the color is the same, but this refresh the car anyway, and do a better job...
The only thing I hate of the Bird, it's removing the rear upper top panels ONLY to remove the birds emblems on outside:beatyoass: ...
It's probably the last time I remove this f#ckin birds, the car will always garaged in winter, and it's good for around 20years, and in 20years I'm probably passed away:D ...
Regards,
Dom.
yea i understand what you mean, should look awesome, wanna come down here and paint my car? It would be a nice vacation, and ill let you drive it
Nice color!
It reminds me of a Chrysler/Dodge color I used to paint one of my guitars a few years ago. I think it was called "Medium Intense Blue Pearl."
I still have this guitar, and it's still painted this color.
The color of Your guitar is VERY VERY similar of the 1984 Bird My mother have purchased in 1990, The Chryco color You have (on Your gutar) is very similar of the midnight blue metallic of Chrysler in early 70's, expecially on Crysler Imperial...
Finally The color I choosed is not a Ford color, it's from a paint chips on a LIMCO (Basf/RM) catalog, number M4648S...
Best regards,
Dom.
I'll admit everytime I see that this thread has a new post I'm eager to see your latest work! Good Job!
Thanks for Your good words, the next week I'll try to finish completely the body job, I missed to patch and finish the antenna hole on the right front fender, and refinishing the part between the back glass and the trunk, The rest of the car is mint (most damaged was the left fender, but it's done now)...
I have a couple of hours of work on the car again, but not very hard, I just want asap the TC bumper cover to install it on the car, and make the brackets for the fogs (not a big thing to do)...
After that I'll sand the car completely with #320 and #400, paint all non visibles areas, like under the hood, under the trunk, behind the tail lenses, under doors, ect, ect...
But I'll wait for the complete paint cauz My basp00get garage is only heated a bit by the furnace, and a 4800watts 220v heater, and don't want to heat up at 75`, and once the paint blower on the wall run It drop the temp to 60`, and it's very too cold to paint at 60`, MINIMUM is 68`, best is around 72`, when I painted a couple of parts to check the paint, I shooted on a old front fender, it was around 62-64` in the garage, and the paint started to fall, and I don't want the paint start to do it on the car when I paint:beatyoass: ...
I'll wait when the coldest outside temp will be a bit cool, like 30` plus...
Have a nice Day,
Dom.
so like i said you want to do my car?
Sweet, once i get the underside done, ill tell you and you can come on vacation.
Keep it up,you're doing great work.I hope to start the bodywork on Pheonix very soon.I got the engine in,now everything else has to be swapped, like the complete interior, maybe the dash unless I can dye it,carpet, console, everything.Your work helps me stay motivated.Thanks.
Vinnie
Decided for shiznits and giggles id see how far away you are, and your only 455.55 from my town, which is about 8 hours, i figured ud be farther then that
Hello Vinnie!,
I just posted the bodywork of My car to explain and give to the people of the board the progress of My Bird, I guessed a lot of people like to see a "work in progress" pictures, like Me (I like to see)...
If this give a motivation to You and anothers, I'm glad to read this, It's always funny to see work in progress of a car (for Me)...
And I guess, some on the board hate to do bodywork, but it's easy, But I'm pissed off to do this, I rebuilted a couple of hundreds cars in the past in a customizing garage I worked 10 Years ago, frame jobs, custom jobs, body jobs, ect, ect, But I take some jobs in the summer, I have on the side of My home a Suzuki Swift to rebuilt for an another guy this summer, This $&^% car need completely disassembled and cutted in two parts (frame rotted on the front), I suggested s the car, but the guy looooove his car, and paid for, then I go...
After I finish My '85 Bird, I'll post some pics of the engine rebuild and a little bodywork (very little) on the '86 Bird I purchased at the Junkyard in September, this car is in amazing condition, But after I fix the head gasket issue on his 3.8 V6 to pass the inspection and have a new title, I'll plan to put a decent block in it, like a 351C or maybe a 390 (if the guy still have the engine), But I have in the backyard a 351C from a 1971 Montego MX (I totaled in 1989) with an FMX trans, I guess is enough to make a good "ricer killer":hick:
For the summer I'll run My 85 and when the 86 will be plated for the road, I'll drive time to time until I'll put in My garage to do engine swap, 5 lugs conversion, and paint job for 2008, two birds in My basp00get garage, hewwww!, the garage have 50feet long by only 18feet large, I'll be a bit tight to work, and My 85 will be well covered as well...
This week I'll try to grab a rear trunk spoiler from a Chevy lumina (car) and modify to fit in the bird...
Keep up Your good work, and I hope to see some pics of Your work...
I'll post some pictures this week of the 85 with all non visible painted area, and My TC bumper cover swap if I receive this week...
Have a nice Day,
Dom.
I'll have Fila post pics tomorrow for me.He said he didn't mind at all.Stay tuned for them.
You are great doing bodywork ehhhh !!! nice, very nice ! you have to tell me some secrets about working with iron (i dont know ANYTHING about sanding, painting, bla bla bla). Some stupid guy wrecked the front right fender in my cougar since 2005 and i have the replacement part (used), but simply i dont know how to start, how to sand, etc...
Keep up the good work Dom...
Thanks for the good words Friend,
I'm not the only guy on the board do the bodywork, another guy (I have a blank of his name) still work on that, I'm "retired" drom working in a garage, but still do in My basp00get garage in the summer when My bird (next winter 2 BIRDS) are not here...
When You ready, let Me know, and send Me some pictures of Your fender or repair area, and I'll explain at the best of possible, with pics if needed.
Hmmmmmm! I have an idea, starting a thread with a do it yourself bodywork with some photos, it's not a bad idea, no?, I just have to keep an old hood I have, rotted Fender, and before I part out My '88 bird, I'll repair some rusted areas, and do a couple of bumps on the car, then repair, I just have to tell a Friend to take some pics when I work (hands with tools), this will make a good thread I guess:hick: :D
Okay, let Me know when You need some help, and I'll help You...
Best regards,
Dom.
Well, I was kidding when I say "anytime", BUT, IF i have a loose this summer, and some money to travel, I don't say no, it will be funny...
Regards,
Dom.
I know you were, i was too, my dads old friend is prob gonna paint it for me cause he has a garage and means to do it, you should go to cat jam in 08 though ill be there
Hello,
Yes, You need a paint shop, or a cleaned garage with a good fan to paint a car, I painted My van outside in June 1997, the temp was around 90`, and very very humid, a lot of things dropped on the paint, dust, ect, but it's a working truck, not a "trip" car...
The neighboors not liked Me, an acrylic smell a lot, and at 90` nobody close his windows, ButMy neighboors YES at this time, Bwhahahahah!.
I don't guess to go at any car encounter in the US this Year, It's only cauz when I speak in English, it sound like a 4cyl engine blowed on a couple of valves, and no exhaust:hick: , And when I hear, I don't understand 70% of what is speaked, I have absolutely no problems when I read, a bit when I write, but hear and speak is another thing...
BUT, until I have 70 years old, I guess I go to...:D
Regards,
Dom.
Some recent pics, near to paint :hick:
Back bumper cover before reassembled, I'll painted with a can to have a blue coat under the parts, and the front with the TC hood finally finished and the right front fender shaved antenna...
Note: on the rear photo, You will see the place between the back glass and the trunklid will need only to be sanded (on the finishing putty on the pic), I hate this place on the 83-86 birds, prob solved in 87-88...
Regards,
Dom.
I'm sure when the paint go's on, that it will be clean.
Your gettin there!,Lookin good.
Agree with You for sure :hick: , when the bird go out fot the summer, I'll be very clean and strong from A to Z, and I'll keep looking good, unless I have a great engine (3.8 V6) brand new, I'll have a good cruising car...
BUT, I'll have a '86 bird shortly from the junkyard, the car is gold (int and ext) and in EXCELLENT condition, amazing, I don't understand for why this car was dumped in a jy, but it have a head gasket issue, I'll just repair the engine and check all to pass inspection, and after that, I'll put in a good block, like a 351C (not a Fck!n windsor), or 429/460, but I'll guess I'll keep My 351C from a 1971 Montego MX I have in the shed, with his FMX trans, YEAH!...
Good day,
Regards,
Dom.
why not a windsor, but its coming along good!
Hello! long time no see!!!,
I hate the Windsor 351 block, cauz it's a modified 302, like the M400 it's a modified 351C...
302=351W
351C=M400
The windsor is not a bad engine, but I like more than a REAL block, not a mod block, I'll wait and choose between a 289 ole Ford block (rare), or a 390, or so a 351C I have, buit NEVER 351W or M400, I guess I receive a lot of missive from people here for My opinion on 351W, but I'll still My words.
The 351W was created to accomodate some smaller fords in the pas, don't have enough space engine bay to put a 351C, with same performance (I doubt of it), the 351C is the best 351 ever made By Fors cauz is a block created for 351CI.
The 460 is a real good engine, but the 429 (same block) is deliver much power (depending of the Year), and the 429 deliver more HP than the 460 (same year again), but the 460 have more torque at the same rpm, the 429 is better in a car, the 460 is basically a truck engine, but I owned My first Marquis 1974 with a 460 4bbl, and this car unless his 4500lbs was very very fast.
But I owned a 1971 Marquis I purchased at 12 or 13 years old, this car weight around 5000lbs and the 429 4V inside was a real beast, unless the gas mileage, it was qwicker than My 74 Marquis 460.
For a short long history, I like the REAL ci engines, not a mod engines...
Your stang was have a 289 I guess???, there was a very very goos small block, A friend of Me have a 67 and 289 original inside (the blue one I talked to You), dual exhaust, ect, great car!!!...
Have a Nice Day,
Dom.
i though the 351M was a modified 302? cause you can bore a 351w way more then you can a 302? my mind is in to many places to know if im right or not. it was a 289, still have a lot of the parts from it like a dual carb intake and a few other things. the 351w is way more fun
Hi!,
Check closer between an old 302 and 351W, this is basically the same block, the major changes was the crank and the stroke, and maybe the bore a bit (My ole manuals is in the garage)...
The M400 is basically the same block of a 351C, with some changes like 303-351W.
429 and 460 are the same block too, but at this size You will be anything with that without issues.
My ole Mercury Cyclone spoiler 429 was punched 460 at the rear of the block, I see this when I changed the transmission.
Curious thing, in a Fors, it was a 360ci truck block, and basically the same of a 390, and the 360 was a gas eater without torque, the 390 (same block) was powerful and not a gas eater, it's curious...
This kind of mod blocks is not just in a Ford, GM, Chrysler do the same, BUT without same "flop" as some fords blocks.
Regards,
Dom.
then whats a 351M? i heard they suck compared to 351w
YES, the 351M or M400 is a nightmare engine, was very popular in the 1970's and 80's, but was a sucker, gas conmption, no powr for the consumption, and generally arouns 100k the engine was out.
the 351M400 was a real flop from Ford, a good 351C or 429/40 was much better and longer life without a prob's...
the only good thing with a M400 it was a popular in 4bbl versions, and 351C was very popular in 2bbl versions, the the "fun" of this is to go at the JY and grab a M400 4V intake for a couple of bucks, and it'd direct fit onto the 351C.
Same for the 351W and 302 intake, they fit one to another.
Dom.
O i get it now, sorry kind of out of it...
No prob's there, it's open to all :D
Dom.
The 351W has a higher deck height than the 5.0.
YES, but have the same pattern as a 302, many parts are interchangeable between these twins...
BYe Vinnie,
Regards,
Dom
along with a wider intake, and differant oil pan rail, ;)
It's near to be painted...
I'll guess I paint the Bird next week or other week, sanded at all, need some little touch of finishing to sand, remove the doors handles, unjack, and paint, YEAH!!!...
Pic 1: general view of left side.
Pic 2: front view.
Pic 3: Rear, bumper reassembled, ect, (note the finishing is done on the trunklid)...
After all, reinstall all the trims and shiznit...:hick: :D
Have a nice Day,
Dom.
Nice work !!! Getting closer all the time.I spent about 3 hours last Saturday sanding on mine.I still have about 1/2 the car to go,and to fill a few little dings, but no big deal.I have to figure out what I'm going to do with the TC scoops on mine.I can't have them open to weather forever,it sucks water all over my engine, and once I polish everything again under the hood I want it to look good.I think I'll take the TC scoop duct and cut it up and see if there's a way to re-route the air to an air box for ram air.I won't have the fan shroud much longer as we're going to install an electrc fan.Time is the hard part. There's just not enough to go around.
Hi Vinnie!,
Yeasss!, another Bird ready for the spring:D , Do You paint Yourself or do the paint By another???...
I'll paint mine myself, I'm not a great painter, but all of the cars I painted go out very clean....
Save lost of money!!!!...
Have a nice Day,
Dom.
I'll do the bodywork, and let my friend paint it.He owns a Maaco, and he only charges me for the supplies, not the labor. He did the Blue car nearly 4 1/2 years ago,and it still shines and looks great.....except in the wrecked areas where it got hit.LOL.
Hey vinnie, be sure to post back if you get any ideas with the TC hood. I have one sittin in the garage waiting to be painted and put on my car and I always wondered if there was a way to actually use the scoops on a 5.0 instead of just letting water and junk pour in.
you could possibly use the piping form the scoops, and make a small box that seals to it with a air filter not sure how youd deal with the water,
Hi,
I'll paint myself cauz I have the space for, but need to spray air all round before (ceiling), but I have the stuff to do, a very good "old" compressor, and a "old but best" DeVilbiss JGA502 with #30 air tip...
It's a good setup, You will see here when the Bird will painted, I'll guess I make a good work.:D
Regards,
Dom.
8 Hours before I paint the Bird:hick: ...
Finally I painted all non visible areas of the bird yesterday, and decided to paint TODAY!!!, I'll guess I'm ready to do at around 12:00PM.
Just to sand the complete front extension, the rear bumper, and some littles areas, plus a couple "last minute" touch of finishing, and I'll FINALLY paint the car, after that, the "fun" of reinstalling all the trims, and other shiznit...
Some last shots before...
Pic: 1- Front.
Pic: 2- Side shot.
Pic: 3- Rear shot.
Note the car is completely masked, and I just have to pull out the 4 beams, at 6 or 7am after a couple of goods coffee I'll finish all theses "last minute" things, and at 12:00pm, Dom go with the gun around the car:hick: :hick: :hick: I llllove it!!!:D
I'll post some pics of the car right after painted as well...
See ya later after the paint :D
Regards,
Dom.
looks great good work man, nice and straight
Thanks Man, I totally finished yet, I just waiting a bit, around 11am before wash the car (with a prepaint body washer, and shoot), somebody sleep again just over the basp00get garage and I'll wait at around 11 to start, the time is looooong euh!:beatyoass: ...
I just see yesterday at around 10pm, the finishing putty cracked a bit just between the back glass and the trunklid, not cracked a lot, but a bit (3-4 long, not VERY visible), I'll paint anyway, and just redo this part this summer...
Later (when it painted:hick: ).
Dom.
I can't wait to see the car after paint.Great work so far.I'm still doing bodywork, and the tranny swap last saturday threw my schedule off.Oh well,it'll get done eventually.
I can't believe I missed this thread (been busy for a while and hadn't been near a computer for the month of February). Lookin good!
FINALLY IT PAINTED!!!!:hick: :hick: :hick: ...
WEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!:D ...
After over an hour around the Bird with the painting gun, 7 layers of paint, this Bird look like a beauty:hick: ...
Now (in a 2-3 Days) reinstall all the chrome trims, mirrors, keylocks, ect, ect...
Here's a couple of pics of the DARK Blue Bird...
First 3.
Next 3, next msg :D
The last three, next time I'll post a pics of My bird here, is in a couple of weeks when I start the spring/summer with it:hick: ...
I'm REALLY REALLY happy it FINALLY finished:D ...
Have a nice Day Guy's,
Dom.
, that thing looks sick!
Is that base and clear,or polly? looks good ,Color looks great.
Hello,
No, it's an acrylic enamel BASF/LIMCO II without clear...
Regards,
Dom.
I'll NEVER paint another car with poly unless it's a garage queen.....
It look better than before (faded a lot)...
Dom.
good job!!
NICE WORK!
That already looks fantastic. I can't wait to see it with all of the other parts attached.
Very nice.
Thanks a lot Man, and when I receive the TC front bumper, I'll paint and install:hick: ...
I started today to reassemble all trims, lights, ect, almost finished!!!.
Regards,
Dom.
I'm unable to wait a bit, I taked a pics a few minutes ago (5h15am) to post two pics of the Bird almost finished:hick: , I'm too happy:D (finally finished)...
Okay, I need to repaint the bumpers trims, ect, but it's near the door, when the weather decide (around 8" snow for the next weekend), BUT after that, I'll put out the Bird out of the garage, and nice season for Me with My lovely Bird:D ...
Here's two pics with the chrome trims here, and near finished (except a great cleanup inside EEEH!)...
Regards,
Dom.
looks great man, i bet your relived it done
Almost done, just doors keylocks, trunk carpets and amplifier, ect, and some stupidity like that, OH YESS!!!!!!!, I'll plate the Bird for the first ov April, and if snow and ice are out of My garage entry, thrust Me, I'll pull out fast:D .
IF I'm not capable to go out I'll wait a bit, no problem's there, but I'm in a little rage to drive the bird:hick:
Regards,
Dom
Oh yeah, the 'bug' a car guy gets right before his car is done is like nothing else, whether its a weekend project or one that has taken months or years. It's lookin great man, I hope you enjoy it a lot!
Poly paint is a pain to wet-sand as opposed to a base/clear enamel. Bird droppings STILL leave marks 5 years later that have to be compounded. When I say marks I mean marks that in some instances need to be wet-sanded. I did this twice last year alone. There is a lot less room for error with poly paint.
Okay, next time paint with a clear coat (onerous), or acrylic:D
I decided to paint mine with an acrylic enamel cauz the base coat was too pricey for Me (near 900$), and I figured My car never go out in a winter (basp00get garage), so the acrylic is the best for My car...
Dom.
I'll enjoy a lot for sure, this bird run like a new car (last year rebuilted the V6), and I full equipped with what You want (full load)..
I'll just add a stab/sway bar on the drivetrain (from a stang or...) and with My "poor V6" I'll strong enough on the road...
Dom.
hey bud, i just noticed you were on. got any out of the garage pics of your car where that color will really pop?
