Title: Horrible, horrible night last night...
Post by: Thunder Chicken on January 09, 2007, 10:12:13 AM
...So last night about 8:00 somebody opens a door and Olive, the little black kitten I had brought home from the cottage in deer season (http://"http://www.foxtbirdcougarforums.com/showpost.php?p=110403&postcount=54") bolts out the door. We tried getting her back inside but she was having too much fun, so we gave up, figuring she'd get bored and come back. 9:00, no cat. 10:00 no cat. 11:00 still no cat. Just before midnight it occurred to me that I had been in the garage and that she may have followed me in and gotten locked in. I went out to check and noticed something in the road by the mailbox. I got a light and checked, and sure enough, it was Olive lying there, dead. She had been hit by a car (not hard to imagine, since she was pitch black and it was raining - she'd be almost invisible). I picked her up and she was still warm, so it had just happened. I had to bury her immediately because the temperature was supposed to drop below freezing (no fun digging in frozen ground), so there I was at midnight, in the rain, digging a grave for a cat.

After burying her I came inside and cried (in fact I'm choking up typing this). I haven't slept. I just feel so bad because she had so much personality and was so young. At least I have pictures...

Carm, I'm really saddened to hear about this. My sympathy to you and the family. At least she survived a lot longer with you, than she would have alone in the woods. You gave her a good, warm, loving home...and she was happy. Small comfort but I hope it helps.

Well that sucks.  Sorry to hear that.

It's been a few years since I lost a cat (kind of a nasty death and he died in my hands trying to get organized and out the door to the vet).

It's always sad to lose a pet.  I had to put my big old dog down the beginning of Nov.

I'm sorry to hear that, Carmen. :( Losing a pet is never easy.

I grew up on what seems like the only straight stretch (of even pavement at that) on the 347. Needless to say, my parents gave up on pets. It's a shame to have a farm with naught but chickens for animals.

RIP Olive.

That's so sad! I'd be in the nuthouse right now without my 2 cats! We're here for you Carm.

Sorry to hear about Olive, I can understand how you feel.. We have two(one a rescued stray). Never cared for any animal as much as these two.

We almost lost Tillie(the stray)when she knocked over the wifes Galileo thermometer, and sampled the spilled glycol. Vet didn't think she'd make it, but apparently she's a bit tougher than they thought... Been a over year now and she shows no ill effects...

I feel for you, as i have had sleepless nights waiting for a few of my cats to come back just to come to the realization that my neighbors probably caught them and killed them. Again i feel sorry for you i know how it feels to loose a very dear pet, infact just a few months ago we had to put one down.

That sucks. Why does it always happen to the nice young cats? Why not the old nasty ones that try to bite you when they see you?

I hate animals, I hate having pets...

This is because of the loss of our family dog last year.  Nicest old dog ever, one day she just walked away to die.  I don't want that to happen again.

Atleast I didnt' have to deal with the pain of actualy seeing her dead.  Good luck Carm.

That sucks dude, I dont care what anyone says losing a pet is just like losing a sibling/parent etc. Atleast you gave it a happy loving life.

Our family cat died last year, he was 13 years old feline lukemia Luckily I didnt have to see him in his final days before he was put down, I wouldnt have been able to handle it.

Hang in there.

Sorry Carm,  I lost one of my cats 2 years ago.....

She was a stray we took in right after we got married and she popped out 4 kittens 3 weeks later.  We kept 2 and gave the other 2 to my wife's parents.  We still have her ashes.

Sorry to hear about your cat. It's not fun losing a pet. I've lost 2 dogs, 2 fish and 2 gerbils.

I never liked cats but my sister adopted 2 a few years back and they're great.

Thanks all, for your kind words. It really helps. I feel a fool for letting this get me down so much, but I simply can't help it. I really liked that cat.

My 9 yo niece is taking it really, REALLY hard. She even started crying in the middle of the night last night - my sister asked what was wrong and she blurted that she had broken a promise to Olive. Apparently she promised the cat on Christmas day that they'd be best friends forever. My sister spent half the night trying to comfort her and trying to convince her that she didn't break any promises.

One really strange thing - my two oldest cats, Murphy and Igor, went up and sniffed Olive's body while I was digging the hole. These two cats have never been particularly affectionate (and being cats, they didn't particularly like Olive, the newcomer), but since Olive died they can't get close enough. Murphy has taken to sleeping on my bed with me holding her tail all night again (she stopped doing that ages ago), and Igor actually pushes himself against me to get as close as possible. It's almost as though they can sense how upset I am and they're saying "Hey, you've still got US y'know!"

Right now I've got a 22-pound cat (Igor) sleeping on my head as I lie on my bed with the laptop on my chest. Literally - he's wrapped his body right around my head. Rear toes in my left ear, front toes in the right. I can feel, but not hear, his purr (his purr is very low pitch - it's inaudible. You have to touch him to see if he's purring at all). Strangely, it helps.

Whew! Your story touch Me really!!!, it's because I guess Your dog leave his last breath near the one he liked over all, he's died softly just over the most important pesron for him, and theres a personnality of dog's, fidelity, honesty, loving from young to end of life, Is the truly mind of the dogs...

My Labrador/wolf has just 7 1/2 yrs, but when I lost, I hope is in the same manner...

Sorry to here carmen... that really sucks. At least you have the other 2 to help soften the blow though. People with pets all know that they can never be replaced and are most definately family.

My dog went mia for like 20 minutes and i freaked out, I don't know what I'd do if something like that happened...

My mom ran over one of my cats once.  I was devistated, he was like a brother (as wierd as that sounds).

plus that happened to me with my GF's cat, I really liked that cat, and I was the only one that could keep my composier long enough to bury her.  That was last year and I still miss her.  You have my sympathy man.

I've been a cat owner my whole life and currently have five.
Um, wow dude.  That puts a knot in my stomach for a number of reasons.

On a slightly lighter note, I love this picture.  Little thing looks sinister as hell:

My GF has a black kitten like that. Little shiznit claws me every chance he gets. There's a reason it's named Hellion

That's a bummer, sorry to hear.  It's always hard losing a pet.  We had to put our cat to sleep in 2003, found him in the window of Canadian tire when i was 10.. Had him almost 20 years.
