Title: Has anyone else noticed..............
Post by: vinnietbird on January 05, 2007, 11:24:13 PM
Is it me,or has there been a lot of new folks selling cars and parts lately that don't post anything else? When you look at the posts from them,it's just in the for sale area.Perhaps it's just me looking too deep into things.Maybe I'm sleepy.

i dont know. i dont particularly notice it, but it CAN happen and unfortunately does more than it should. it happened a lot as the membership grew at a computer hardware discussion forum i belong to, and the result? a minimum post count was enacted to be able to even view the for sale/want to buy forum.

its kinda like growing pains for a forum i guess? things like that which cause a transition from the small membership and lax, laid back nature of everything in it to a huge amount of members necessitating stricter rules and tighter control?

i dont want it to change! i like this board the way it is :(  and with the small number everyone knows everyone. one beacon of hope is the limited number of our cars out there, so its not like the membership can get real big and never stop growing.

if this is anything like what living in a small town feels like, i would LOVE to live in a small town, in Hickville, USA or something. I swear thats where I'm going when im older. out in the country, and south to get away from the $%#& road salt! :hick:  hell yeah

Ok, so I'm not alone here.

I'm all about folks coming here letting us know about a Cougar for sale. I also feel that sellers should be able to ask whatever price they want. If you really want to sell it, the asking price will reflect. If you aren't under pressure, and just feel like casting the rod to wait for a better offer, than that's your choice. (Hell, there was, and still may be, a Blue Max with 150K miles for sale for at least a year in Arizona for somewhere around $11000. I think we already have a way to call out the really absurd prices though in rule #9.)

However, if you are putting a car up for sale, expect questions. If you don't want questions, or if you want to weed out tire-kickers, then lay everything out clearly and accurately in the description and be consistent with the description everywhere this car is listed. Believe it or not, these people actually visit other sites where your car may be listed as well.
Take a car with a 'for sale' sign in it for example. It's in a parking lot with a phone number and the mileage written on the sale sign but no price. Then, after the person gets six phone calls asking about price, they complain about tire kickers. I don't see why so many people are hesitant to write the price down under the mileage.
For many people in this forum, cars are their hobby. Many of us are always looking and always ready to buy but we are looking for cars meeting certain criteria. If you don't list some details and post some good pics, you're going have your time wasted and chain yanked around over simple tire-kicker questions that should have been addressed in the initial ad. If the ad is clear enough, the tire-kick stage will happen between the potential buyer and the ad, not the potential buyer and you. I have "kicked the tires" on every car I have ever bought, sometimes with the ad, sometimes over the phone. Allow your ad to address the tire-kick stage, not the phone call.

Don't claim that a car is fully loaded or rare unless you have the dealer brochure or have researched all the options and trim levels that were available for your car in that model year. If you can't find this information, simply list what your car has and post clear pictures of the car and all the buttons and do-dads. Remember, these members live and breathe this stuff. If you say your car is fully loaded, and it has a cubby above the radio, a manual passenger seat, a fixed radio antenna, and a shiznit-ton of knockout panels next to the headlight switch, you have just jeopardized the integrity of everything else you say making potential buyers doubt your honesty. This audience sees these cars come and go all the time. If your car is really loaded or rare, we'll know it. No need to try and bullshiznit us.
If you want to give your thread a bump back to the top, a simple "bump" will do.
This  where some asshat goes on and on about a 60K-mile car being the finest example in existence to a bunch of enthusiasts who have everything from trailer queen collections with the original shipping plastic on the seats to daily drivers to rust buckets is ridiculous. Try that "finest example" approach at the local cruise-in.

And for crying out loud, if you don't feel like typing much detail, post many clear pictures or a link to many clear pictures of at least both sides, several interior shots, and the engine. These pictures are a joke. (http://www.foxtbirdcougarforums.com/showthread.php?t=11436)  Several clear pictures can take the place of time spent typing.

THATS AMAZING.

thats it im packing up now.

and re: Cougars2Go's post-- (and i think he nailed it spot on)

he mentioned that 20th anny with the horrible pictures. they claimed very low mileage and use. as good shape as mine's in, its been through A LOT! 120k miles almost, i would love to even be able to drool over one with 15k or whatever absurdly low number they said. just to see every component still clean, not even dirty, let alone paint faded or rust-ridden, looking like it just rolled off the showroom floor. i could detail and restore every element of my car but theres still nothing like the original components in the shape they were in some 20 or 30 or 60 or however many years ago they were fresh new products.

when theres pics like that either a) they really dont know jack about computers b) theyre HIDING something

unfortunately its often the latter.

Does this mean that I should be apoligizing?  Even though I was on here quite a bit in the past, almost all of my previous 10 or so posts have been to try to sell my car.  I still love the car and if money and space permit in the future, wouldn't mind getting another one.  It's just that I have the state riding my ass to get it gone, and no money or time to fix it.  So, I guess what I'm getting at is, sorry for not posting more than I have.

dont hide man we luv ya!!!:giggle:

no but seriously you've been here awhile, established yourself as a fellow enthusiast, theres no problem with even parting out your entire car if it became a huge rustbucket or you had to get rid of it because of extenuating cirspoogestances, etc.

we're talking about people who join and instantly start peddling their stuff as if this is ebay and its full of suckers. they dont put enough detail hoping, again, we're all suckers and we'll pay out the ass for their stuff that isnt really that good anyway (but they sure claim it is!!!!)

So let me get this straight - we all complain when we can't find parts for our cars, yet we complain that people try to sell them?

Screw you guys, I'm gettin' a Mustang :shakeass:

Joking apart, we can't really limit new users from selling stuff because these cars are old and hard to find parts for. Just remember it's buyer beware. As for users posting once and disappearing, it doesn't do the board any harm - no extra bandwidth is used and we have plenty of storage space.

I also wish that people would post more details about stuff they're selling (price, location, and pics) but it's impossible to expect everyone to follow the rules, much less do things the smart way. I'm not about to moderate every post in the for sale section...

I did just install a script that prevents people from posting links before they hit 5 posts, but that's more of an anti-spammer thing

I didn't start this thread to pick on anybody.I just want everyone to be careful and not get ripped off.Parts are hard to find, and we all can get carried away buying from an untrustworthy person out of despewration for that one part we've always been looking for. So,for you newbies,no offense to anyone, just make sure you describe the item as it is,pics if possible, give your location and the location of said parts (my friend in buttville has a ploknart for sell and I'm trying to help him out.......),payment method, etc.I just want everyone to be safe.

Thunder Chicken,

I wouldnt have so much of a problem, because yes you got a point its hard to find cars/parts like ours. BUT i would be okay if they would provide detailed descriptions and PHOTOS.

as ChuckW said,

lazy sellers suck. maybe they have a good item thats actually worth their asking price! but we'll never know for sure if they wont let us see it....

I find it hard to trust someone who joins a forum for the sole purpose of selling a "whatever".I feel like someone is trying to take my money then disappear.Paranoid?Proabably a little.

I am kinda that way on turboford, corral, carbdford and stangnet. I just go there mainly to buy and sell. Most of the threads I have no interest in, or I have nothing to contribute so I pretty much have posts only in the For Sale forums. You just got to be careful... that's what the feedback forum is for.

I've only bought items on here 3 times and have used it twice.....First time there was no section yet.....
BTW Vin, I checked on that shifter surround for the floor shifter.  What was left in the backseat of the car was about 1/3 of the piece.  I figured you didn't want it.  I'll keep my eyes peeled though.....

Hello Vinny,

I noticed this a few times, BUT it's not an invasion of sellers on the board, it's not a great thing I guess...

Same for some guy's post a question on a topic, and once replyed correctly You never see again...

I noticed what do You say, but I have a lot of things to do before check this, and maybe, some great deals no?...

Have a nice Day!,

You don't lose money asking tech questions. One of our members lost $500.00.That's serious money.Selling and asking info about the cars are two different worlds. Not everyone that is new and selling parts is out to scam someone. There are a lot of decent, honost people. There are also a lot of people wanting to sell a couple of cheap items to look honost, then, sell something expensive, grab the money and run.Like I said,we have to look out for each other, ask a lot of questions, and get all the info we can when buying. If someone is an honost seller, they won't mind answering any questions thrown at them.We need a way to contact them if asked,a location of seller, and said parts, and pics if possible.

I don't mix up exchange of info's and material things, I'm not stupid, but if You pay attention from what You're buying, and WHERE You buy from, ??????????, It's a guess, but is the same way when You purchase from a new user on ebay...

I lost 350$ last year on ebay from a guy here since 2002, and it suddenly dissapeared, never see My money, I tried ebay or paypal, and f**k off!, I lost 350$ that's it...

It's not a normal thing, but it's life maybe...

Best regards,

True.Very true.Sometimes no matter how careful you are,it bites you.I watch new sellers on E-bay also.I found one the other day that had changed his name 6 times in 8 months. That makes me nervous.I didn't buy from him although he was advertising an item I really wanted.Too risky.Good opinions Maniac.
