Title: 235/50 vs 245/50 on ponies
Post by: DVP on September 07, 2006, 06:10:30 PM
i need tire really bad now ive put it off for an exta month an a half.

i want to go 245/50 so is that to wide for the front? and is the height around the same as a225/55?

im trying to figure it out but tire sizes are confusing me:flame:

does anyone know what the height is in comparison to the225/55s

and what is a good height for 235s

thanks i am really confused

Im running 245/50/16 on my waffle stars, which are the same size as your pony's

245/50 is a plus zero, so its what you would want to go with, 235/55 is a plus zero too but 235/50 is actually less in tire height.

Both 245/50 and 235/50 are shorter than the 225/55.

The numbers mean this...

The number to the left of the slash is the tire width in millimeters (not exact nor the tread, width as manf's vary), the number to the right is the aspect ratio, or the multipler to determine the sidewall height.

So the 245/50 has a sidewall of 245/50=122.5mm or 4.82"
The 225/55 has a sidewall of 225/55=123.75mm or 4.87"

To figure out the total diameter, you multuiply the sidewall  by 2 and add it to the wheel diameter...

So for the 245/50-16 the overall diameter is (2x4.87) + 16=25.75"
The 225/55-16 overal diameter is (2x4.82) + 16=25.64"

The overall diameter is not that much different between the two, but depending on the wheels, you "might" have a little rubbing on the fenders with the 245/50's

Bah.....

And no rubbing issues with 245/50's even lowered.

Like I said, he "might"...I've had cars rub and cars not rub....

Exactly what chucks said but also remember every tire company measures differently. I don’t know why but if you take 2 identical size tires from two different companies they are a little different.

It is usually the actual tread width that's different, but yes there are always some discrepancies overall.

Thanks guys.
im pretty sure it wont rub but i dont want the tire to stick out up front like a 80s lowrider with 8in wide tires and3' backspacing. ive hated that since i was a kid (little kid).

do you think it will stick out up front more than a 1/4 or 1/2 in?

could i run a 235/50 up front and 245/50 out back and not have the front taller or too much smaller in the front? im going to try and use that formula but i am still alittle confused.

do 245 all around, so youre able to rotate your tires.

I run 245 all the way around, and they dont stick out.

They won't stick out, but could be close to rubbing.  The only thing you can do is try.

245 is a little wide for a 7" wide wheel though, IMHO.  I'm not sure I really gained anything at all and might have hurt myself by going with a 245 instead of a 235.  And like I think Chuck said, it's a little smaller overall, which makes the low gearing problem worse.

these cars came with 14"s and i had TRX rims which were smaller than the225/55 that i have now. im not worried about gearing i have all stock except the ponies and stereo.

thanks im going to call on them tomorrow around here and then compare to tirerack. then i can get my alinement.

can i get my alinement before i get the tires? or should i wait.
