I am dropping my 1984 Cougar LS off at the shop. When I drive it the car randomly loses all power and then it is fine. This seems to be aggravated by bumpy roads and low fuel. I suspect this is fuel pump related. I already replaced the fuel filter and drained the gas but the problem persists.
So I am going to get the fuel pump changed. I'd like to replace the two pump system with a single pump in the tank. I also plan to move the fuel filter so I can set the car up for dual exhaust.
My first question is what pump should I get to replace the old two pump system and will just clamping a hose in place be enough to bypass the second pump?
Second, where should I relocate the fuel filter to?
I think I have the towing package in my 1984 LS Cougar. It has a 7.5" 3.08 rear and I think there are transmission cooler lines to the radiator. I did see that the 3L08 tag is needed for a trac-lok rear and I don't have that.
The Mustang conversion for rear discs is good info.
Thanks to everyone for the comments and suggestions here.
I don't have the shaft style radio. I think what's in there is aftermarket. I am guessing since there are no holes for shafts, it's a DIN style. I don't know what Sentry Lights are so I think I don't have them. Other than that, the pict attached is also a good example. Any help is appreciated.

Is the picture the exact one you need? The pic shows a shaft-style radio without the system sentry lights.
That trim came in about 4 variations- With/without the system sentry lights, and shaft-style radio/din-style radio. I don't have any extras, but I figured I would help you find the one you need.
I am trying to locate the piece from where the dash meets the console for my 1984 Cougar LS. It is a roughly rectangular piece of black plastic that frames the climate controls, radio and the cigarette lighter/antenna switch.
I'm including a picture and a drawing of the part. Any leads to find it would be appreciated.
I have a 1984 Cougar LS and I'd like to first off, see if I have a limited slip diff and if not, determine the easiest way to change to one. Any advice is appreciated. I might even like switching to a 5-lug rear wheels if that's not a bridge to far.
I am buying a 1984 Cougar LS as a project car. It's stock with a 5.0L engine (113K miles) , AOD trans and I am guessing a 7.5 rear. The trans has issues (stuck in first) and I posted that question in the powertrain forum.
My question here regards my grand plan for this car. I eventually want a crate 351 windsor, a Lentech trans and a traction-lock rear. I'd also like to swap the wheels our for disk brake 5-lug wheels. From what i saw on CoolCats.Net this looks doable (albeit pricey). From what I read that is mostly plug and play changes. Is that too optimistic? I may want an 8.8 rear with tra ction lock eventually.
Can anyone comment on that plan? The goal is to have a fast, street running, sleeper of a Cougar.
New guy here. I am buying a 1984 Cougar LS - 5.0L with assumed AOD . The transmission is stuck in first. Is this a vacuum problem typically or is there something else I should look at. Car has 113K original miles.
