General Fox T-Bird/Cougar Discussion / Thunderbird Sport info wanted
Thanks for the info, guys. A friend of mine was looking into buying the car, but unfortunately its a POS in person. There is a lot of weird misinformation about the Thunderbird Sport floating around on the internet, so I figured it would be best to ask the authorities.

Thanks,
Drew

General Fox T-Bird/Cougar Discussion / Thunderbird Sport info wanted
I know the stuff swaps easily, I was just a little surprised by the car in the ad. I didn't think too many came with the TC nose...  Its an interesting amalgamation of pieces and I was wondering if it was some different package as the car looks to be as it came from the factory.

General Fox T-Bird/Cougar Discussion / Thunderbird Sport info wanted
I saw this on the local Craigslist and was curious... I didn't think the "Sport" package came with the Turbo Coupe header panel and headlights. Is that factory? It looks like it is to me...

Also, would this be one of those rare cars with the true 5.0 HO engine?

Is there anything else that is special about the seemingly elusive "Thunderbird Sport" other than the 5.0 HO and the TC header panel? Didn't they have the Mustang GT spindles and 11" front brakes too?

Thanks for the info,
Drew

T-Bird/Cougar Parts & Cars FOR SALE / 5.0 HO CFI parts
Yes, Fearnot I do have the air cleaner, but I will want a little more.

Sorry for the slow replies... I have been on night shift and not particularly bright eyed and bushy tailed during the day.

T-Bird/Cougar Parts & Cars FOR SALE / 5.0 HO CFI parts
I am swapping SEFI into my LTD LX and I have the complete High Output CFI harness, ecm and intake with throttle body and all sensors. Car ran fine before the swap. I also have a non-HO setup.

I figure everything for the CFI stuff is worth $100 plus shipping, but I'm willing to take offers.

Let me know if anyone might be interested in this.

Thanks,
Drew

T-Bird/Cougar Parts & Cars FOR SALE / '84 Élan for sale
Anyone want to buy an '84 Thunderbird Élan with a 302 and AOD?

The car is my daily driver for now.

Car has 87,xxx original miles, no rust and the AC works.

I installed an '87-'88 scooped Turbo Coupe hood on the car when I first purchased it.

That being said the car does need a paint job as the clear coat has started to peel on the hood and tops of the fenders.

The fuel injection harness had a short in the ignition wiring so I converted the car to carb with a Ford Duraspark II distributor... Holley 600 with vac secondaries, a new Weiand "street warrior" intake manifold and the Lokar TV cable that is recommended for a 4 barrel carb installation on an AOD car or truck. Even with the big carb, the car gets 17-20 mpg, just like it did with the CFI.

The stock Ford "premium sound" radio died and I replaced it with a Pioneer AM/FM/CD unit with auxiliary and USB ports and a remote. I didn't hack up the original harness, I used the adapter kit. I also replaced both door speakers.

The interior is pretty clean, but has some wear, as is expected for a 31 year old car. There are no tears in the seats and only one crack in the dash.

The car has been lowered a bit less than an inch on '99 Mustang GT springs up front and I took a coil out of the rear springs to level the stance.

The car would make a nice first car or be a good start for a different fox body project.

I want $2500 or best offer for the car as is. It is located in Roanoke, Virginia and I can travel a little ways to meet people of they are interested.

Engine Tech / Duraspark Module vs. GM HEI "Kidney Bean"
I am aware of what the cranking retard does and I do not believe it's necessary when you have the low compression these motors carry the starter should be just fine.

Yes, the "ready to run" deal recommended setting total timing as opposed to initial, but with no initial advance the car won't get out of its own way and is really only happy at interstate and highway speeds and gets poor gas mileage. The duraspark distributor is certainly the way to go.

Engine Tech / Duraspark Module vs. GM HEI "Kidney Bean"
Has anyone converted to the GM "kidney bean" module with a Duraspark distributor?

I dropped in a "ready to run" distributor and I'm tired of crutching the faulty vacuum advance, that and to 5,000 RPM the dizzy adds 35ish degrees of mechanical advance timing instead of the 20 degrees added by the Duraspark distributor. The "ready to run" distributor already uses a GM style module (only needs wires from + and - side of coil) to run, so I figure I will wire the Duraspark dizzy to the HEI module (purple wire to the "G" terminal, the orange wire to the "W" terminal and the ground to the same ground as the module).

I know I "should" wire in the whole duraspark box, but I need to add a ballast resistor and that requires additional harness hacking, something I've kept to a minimum with my carb conversion.

What's you guys thoughts on the matter?

Thanks,
Drew

Engine Tech / 84 bird hop ups
My '84 Elan with a 302 had a short in the EEC harness for the TFI. I converted to carb and am actually only using the low pressure in-tank pump with no additional regulation to a 600 cfm Holley 4160. I did purchase the Lokar cable and have had to fiddle with TV pressures and have had a few issues with the aftermarket distributor I purchased (change the springs and a faulty vacuum advance) and had to play with the jetting in the carb, but my car is getting 18-19 mpg and doing so reliably now. This was done out of necessity, however.

I don't find our cars awfully anemic, they are adequate for a daily driver. (They are a world better than the 70's mid-size Fords hands down)

I would recommend switching out to the bigger (87-93 V8 Mustang or SN95 spindles depending on 4 or 5 lug) brakes and switching to the "Sport" power steering rack (see the "Cool Cats" web page) and putting on a later model mustang rear sway bar and a higher ratio rear end (either 8.8 or 7.5) before you attack the engine's lack of hp. Also look into swapping in the SN95 V8 springs for a little drop and stiffer rate.

I think a better handling and stopping car lets you have more fun with less horsepower and the car no longer feels like you are driving a 70's Luxo-barge turd!
