Just a note from experience - I first ran my HO conversion with all emissions intact (except cats)then, in pursuit of power removed it all, then due to new smog testing I reinstalled it all (again - no cats, I just told the inspector my bassani X was a single cat performance pipe and he bought it!). I drag raced this car all three times and found no difference in et's bigger than .05 sec and the car runs better with smog stuff. Better mileage too. Not that I'm a tree hugger or anything - just telling it as i see it.
I've been running a manual eec in my 87 with a 91 HO&aod for 6 years and have yet to have any computer related idle or driveability issues. Once I had idle surge but it went away with new battery terminals, clean ground on the engine block (beside oil filter)and a larger ground strap from the battery to the body (beside washer bottle fill). I have heard that the manual computer has more aggressive fuel and timing curves to go with the improved performance of a 5-spd but I have never run mine at the strip with an auto eec to measure any real world difference.
Ihave a Bassani X on my 87 XR-7 along with 1 5/8 mac shorties,Ravin lers and Dynomax (modified) tailpipes. I picked up 3 tenths just from the X pipe swap back when I was running stock stang headers & stock tails. Also - sounds like NASCAR not like every mustang on the road. Big plus in my books.
To elaborate on what I mean - on the ranger/aerostar speedo, according to info I've found elsewhere, the speedometer readings can be adjusted to compensate for rear gear ratio and/or tire size changes. Check out ford-trucks.com I realize that these are different units but wondered whether they might share some functional similarities. Worth looking into, I think. All those dealer-only modes got me wondering. thanks
Hi, I'm new to this whole message board thing and I'm looking for more information about the digital speedo self-test functions. Iknow the 1990's aerostars and rangers were capable of speedometer calibration adjustments through their own self-test modes and was hoping we might find something similar on our own cars. any thoughts?
