ok oldraven i can agree to a point that the uaw has the highest pay package with there hourly pay plus benifts totaling out over $70 bucks an hour per employee. but since i belong to a union myself and under diffent guidelines being construction heres what happens with us. there is a thing called pefaling wages witch all companys bid on for employees cost per employee at $36bucks. Now both union and nonunion companys bid this way now my pay per hour is 28 an hour then they break the rest down to pay for insurance, pension plan ,and union dues . the non union companys pay there employees starting at min.wages up to 20 an hour but dont give insurance or a retirement plan if they chose not to. meaning the company keeps the rest of the money to overpay there ceo's ,family's and freinds that never do anything.seen it happen. Now that i have said that if they do away with unions companys can and will go back to paying just min wages nomatter what kind of job it is no benifits or nothing. not saying unions are the best thing since sliced bread, but they do look out for employees.Yes i have worked non union and at one point owned my own busness witch i sold to many heating and air companys around here at the time. but i think the uaw needs to go with the times like the union i belong to and put a market recovery plan in there contracts to help out the companys during hard times. give a little to get a little later on. in these times everyone should work together but i know that wont happen.

Even from the beginning, the car wasn't a production concept

Just like most other concepts, I know ;)  I believe my point was made though.

Hold on there slappy. This car is well over a year old. They just unveiled it at Chigaco.

GM's financial woes are older than that...

Hmm....Some supporting material.  http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5gQgUOyKXc5hI1xlodHs6HM8r5nCQD96BLNB80

GM has said its total per-employee labor costs, including wages, pensions, benefits and retiree costs, are now $69 per hour. Toyota Motor Corp., GM's biggest competitor, says its hourly costs are $53. GM's costs will drop to $62 once the retiree health care trust takes effect, the company has said.

I wonder what Ford's and Chrysler's are....
More:

Quote
Among targets for concessions is GM's cash contribution to a trust fund that will take over the obligation for retiree health care starting next year.

GM says it owes $20.4 billion to the fund, and the loan terms set a target of giving the union half of the value in cash and half in GM stock. The trust fund would take over health care payments for GM's roughly 500,000 blue-collar retirees and spouses starting Jan. 1, 2010.

The trust, called a voluntary employees beneficiary association, would let GM move about $46.7 billion in retiree health care costs off its books, making it more cost-competitive with Asian automakers. It is the key feature of a new four-year contract signed in 2007 with the UAW.

The union has said that if fully funded, the trust would provide health care to retirees for 80 years.

FWIW -- Former NY Gov. Cuomo did something VERY similar to this in the early 80's concerning state employee benefit funds.  The unions sued the  out of the state over it and won.  It was the cause of a total restructure of the NYS retirement system.
THAT money IS federally guaranteed.  The money for GM's fund almost assuredly isn't and given their current financial status if I were a UAW rep I'd have walked too.  There is zero confidence that owed money will return to the fund.

GM also must reduce its public unsecured debt by two-thirds and has been negotiating with bondholders to swap the debt for equity. The company said in a Jan. 15 presentation to buttstuffysts that it has $41.6 billion in debt.

41.6 BILLION.......BTW, other sources say up to 60.....

http://www.ubs.wallst.com/ubs/co_news.asp?docKey=354-N30460524-0O85R5PDRR3IQQS4J7JK96BUR9&Source=Reuters&first=40&ticker=GM

Quote
The company is trying to halve its $60 billion debt by offering equity to bondholders. GM also wants to fund part of a health care trust for retired union workers with shares, rather than cash.

Bailout legislation that died in Congress included a provision that would have allowed GM to avoid the tax bill, but the rescue package eventually approved by the White House and Treasury officials in December did not.

GM has received $9 billion of $13.4 billion in promised bailout loans from the government's corporate rescue fund. Chrysler received $4 billion.

Both companies must submit restructuring plans to the government by Feb. 17 and demonstrate their longer-term viability by March 31.

This tread kinda got hijacked but its ok I agree w/ you. I am a former union carpenter. And present job has a union itself. So well said, I always agued in defend of union construction on how it was fare. You can’t pay a 40 year old man 20 dollars an hour cash and expect him to take care of a family. When I was 21 20 dollars an hour cash was great I didn’t need benefits’. But there is a bigger picture here.
The problem w/unions is some guys are protected at least this is how it was in the 90s it drove me nuts guys doing nothing and getting paid the same because they new someone or they were protected. I don’t think there’s too much of that anymore.

Anyway back to the corvette tread

Okay well, back on track the new stingray looks freaking retarded. I have to agree with an earlier comment that the 2011 Taurus SHO is a sweet looking machine ( Of course these have a warm place in my heart seeing as I have owned 2 SHOs and a Taurus of three separate generations but whos keeping track?) When will the Thunderbird and Cougar get another try? With the 5.0 returning this would make my day!!!

Oh. I thought you were saying "I wonder if they'll build it, since they might go bankrupt." I was just saying that they never intended to build it. This is essentially GM filling in for George Barris.

I know, I was responding to the "Some bailout" comment, as if they had used Gov. loan money to pay for that concept. They made it a year before they even asked for the cash.

As for Unions, they've served their purpose. We have labour laws now. Thanks Unions, you can go now, because just like Communism, it sounds good on paper but you can't trust humanity to run it.

Sure, but this concept wasn't funded by taxdollars. I'm not sure it was a smart move building this for the movie. It would make more sense to have used the ZR1, because no one will associate that Sidewinder Vette in the movie with any existing GM product on the road. The Camaro, Beat (Spark), and Volt make sense, but this thing isn't plugging any car for sale currently or in the future.

Lets not all forget the old philosophy, these cars and car shows bring people to the showrooms.
How many dedicated ford fans are there today because of mustangs or and hotrod fords growing up now they buy the family car threw ford. That’s the angle of concept cars.

Well I've been a car salesman and I know how much it sucks to sell cars right now so here is my idea for all auto makers. Build a car that people want, ask people what they want and make it. Look at the failures over the past Pontiac Aztec, Cadillac Catera, Ford Edsel, Pontiac GTO all these cars had a similar problem they were all design problems they just didn't excite people the Ford Flex is having similar problems right now. People take one look and get turned off the only way I can sell them is to get someone to sit in one. Thats just my thoughts.
