Installing electric fan...

I just got a fan from Pick'n Pull out of a 93 3.8 Taurus to put in my 83 5.0.  I already have the installation pretty well planned out except for wondering about that third wire on it.  But my real question is whether I should worry about the fan running down my battery.  The engine is carbureted and the audio system is stock.  Only thing that might suck more juice is the HEI ignition.  Think I can get away with it without upgrading my alternator?  Although alternators are 14.99 at Pick'n Pull so even telling me which one to get would be good.

check out my mark8 fan thread from last year:

As far as the alt goes I think the taurus fan uses the same motor and the mark8 fan so you would need the 130A 3G I would think. check out the dcc fan controller. I highly recommend it. Its a little pricey at ~$125 but it works great!!

I have done this on my 20th. I already done the 3G alternator. This is a 2 speed fan.
Black wire = ground
Brown with orange stripe = low speed
Brown with yellow stripe / Blue wire after plug = high speed

After installing my fan, I had a peice of paper sucked to the grill with the hood up while the fan was running. My fan draws 51amps at start up then settles down to 32amps.

Hope this helps.

Okay I just pretty much finnished installing the 3G alternator and the Taurus fan.  I followed the various intstructions as best I could considering they were meant for Broncos and Mustangs.  What I did was run a battery cable from the alternator to the starter relay with a 175 amp Megafuse in the middle.  And I cut the stator wire from the 3 pr0ng stock connector and ran it to the appropriate plug on the alt as well.  And that's it.  I started the car for about 2 minutes, and the battery light in the dash was on and when I tested the battery voltage it was only 12 point something, I thought it was supposed to be higher.  Granted I didn't quite tension the belt enough and it was waving up and down noticeably but that shouldn't account for the battery light being on.  I didn't disconnect anything stock from the starter relay so presumably the regulator still has a path in the system.  Should I reconnect the black/orange wire to the alternator?  Is there something I'm missing?

Okay I have an idea where I went wrong.  I should've connected the alt cable directly to the battery.  I'll try that as well as reconnect the black/orange wire to the alt along with the new cable and see if the car is happy.

K I just tried it again with the cable frunning from the BAT terminal to the starter relay, the Stator port running to the corresponding wire on the harness, and the FLD wire on the harness is connected to a hot wire.  Except for the original black/orange power wire every wire on the original harness has a home.  And the black/orange wire is supposedly connected to the yellow one that leads to the starter relay so power SHOULD be getting to the regulator for it to play with.  So why is the battery light still coming on?  And why does it seem the alt isn't generating power...I tested the voltage, it showed 12.41 when off and 12.27 while running.  I guess I'll try connecting the black/orange to the alt along with the big 4 gauge cable even if it shouldn't need it.  How about you guys?  I know the wiring may vary, my car is the first in the fox body line ofcourse.  Any insight?

On mine (an 83), I ran a new 4ga wire from the alt stud to the starter solenoid.  The Yellow wire on the plug goes either back to the stud on the alt or to the solenoid.  This is the voltage sensing wire. The white/black(?) is the stator and plugs into the alternator plug.  The green/red wire is the one you connect to the original green/red wire that was connected to the old voltage regulator.  This HAS to be hooked up.  This is the only wire that needs to be spliced into the original wiring.  You can yank the rest of the voltage regulator and wiring.

I had a bad connection in that green/red wire and it was not charging.  I fixed that and am charging at 14.4V.

It's the third generation of Ford alternators. The fan is internal and the output is higher.

Sum_Wierdo: Did you connect the small stator wire to the regulator plug?

I got the alternator going perfectly based on what Chuck told me.  Thanks Chuck.  I've been driving with the new setup for a few days and everything is working nicely, the fan comes on occasionally for a few minutes at a time, pretty good all said.

Just one weird thing though...every time the fan comes on the engine vacuum reading drops considerably.  I have no earthly idea why that is.  I thought the fan relay was disrupting my distributors relay since they shared some wires.  But rewired it today and now those 2 relays are only linked in 2 places: the hot harness wire that activates them and ofcourse the starter solenoid.  Any idea what could be going on?
