blowproof bellhousing fitment question important

I have either a mcleod or lakewood (its red) scatter shield for a 1978 block. Can it fit even with modification on a late model block? The two dowels on the late model block are larger than the holes on the bellhousing. Can I just drill out the two holes to fit over the dowels and call it good? This is on my daily and need a ride to work. Bumming rides blows.
