Ubuntu?

Anyone else using this version of Linux? Just started the other day after I finished a spare-parts PC to run it on. Brutally slow, but that's the fault of the hardware it's on and what it's sitting next to. (comparing the two) Aside from the power supply, I think the newest part on this Linux box is close to 3 years old. (Athlon/1000, 512 megs, 40 gig hard drive, Radeon 9200) Oh well, at least it has a pretty good motherboard and I can drop in a later Athlon XP when I can dig one up. (might pick up a 2500+ from eBay in a month or two.. I'm a sucker for more cache memory) Board has ATA RAID built in, so hopefully I can make use of that sometime soon as well.

I gather it's a pretty easy Linux to use, as Linux versions go.. but learning Linux after using XP all this time has been pretty rough so far. I've had to reinstall three or four times now to get it running properly. (my fault, couldn't get it on the network until I dug out an old spare cable) I don't think I've had this difficult a transition since I went to Win 3.1 from DOS.. I feel clueless about it, although I've managed to get my MP3s over to it across the network and get them playing with XMMS.

Well hopefully someone with a little more Linux experience will come along and give a better perspective on it.

I downloaded it per your suggestion.  Everything seems to work running the Live version with the exception of the wireless network card.  It shows up, but I have no connectivity... I should read up, I guess.

I have ordered the CD's for this version, and downloaded it too. Have to wait till school is over before I am able to install it.

I am excited to try it, cuz it is suppost to be the easy OS. (As far as Linux goes)

Managed to get this somewhat functional for me over the past couple days. Had to alter the default installation of the Totem media player to get DivX movies to play, but now I can play some of my recent video downloads across the network. (no, not porn.. hah.. mostly TV shows like Mythbusters and Family Guy and Robot Chicken)

I have been rather impressed that I could slap together such an outdated system and it still plays video files without choking. On an Athlon/1000 w/ 512 megs of RAM and a Radeon 9200, (a real dog of a card) I was getting smooth playback with nowhere near 100% CPU usage. This could be quite a machine once I pick up the XP 2500+ I want, triple the RAM in it, and eventually move my old Radeon 9700 Pro over to it when my better half is done with it.

I really need to get a couple smaller ATA drives (like 120 gig each.. heh.. I never pictured myself calling 120 gigs "smaller") and make a RAID 0 and dump all my media files over to it.. use this thing as a video and audio server.

Unfortunately, as much as Ubuntu's stock is rising in my eyes, I don't see myself switching to it exclusively any time soon. I like my games too much to give up Windows.. and frankly I don't like some of the eliteism I occasionally run across when reading up on Ubuntu in the proper forums. Stuff like that is why I hated Amigas back in the day and hate Macs now. If I'm gonna be an arrogant prick, I wanna do it all on my own and not because it's what the group calls for. :flip: :asshole: :rollin:

BTW, I'm not saying all Amiga and Mac users were/are pen 15s.. I've known a few decent ones. Just that I see a LOT of that shiznit with those two groups, (past and present) and I feel it's completely unnecessary beyond a bit of joking around. Had a roommate once who designed PC hardware for a living but used a Mac at home.. we'd joke around now and again, but once that passed we'd end up talking about the nuts and bolts of computing on either side without all the BS. Perhaps it's unfair of me to hold other Mac (and other groups) users to such a standard, but I do after dealing with someone like that.

You can emulate windows programs. I have done it alot with dos programs. I havent tried it in like 2 years either. I'll bet you can do most of your games, those that will handle your video card.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.

I have wine installed, but I really don't wanna mess with emulation too much right now. Not until I have something mind-numbingly fast that would render the performance hit of emulation irrelevant. (dual core, etc.) I only installed it because I was thinking about using Trillian on that box.. but then I decided to give the default install of gaim a try, and it functions just fine for what I want it to do.

i have messed with debian some, but had issue on an old 300 mhz dell latitude ls it was running on, the gui wouldn't recognize the video card, but then again, that is a pretty old machine. I may run up a linux machine for my media machine. 1.7 Pent, 1 Gig EEC Rambus, with scsi raid. (yah for corporate leftovers) runs pretty quiet and is better than my personal workstation at home :P

I have more luck with older video cards.

Well with the end of the semester, I am going to wipe my machine and load ubuntu on it.

Well I am typing while in ubuntu (using spare 60gb). It so far is running real smooth, and has detected all of my hardware, (Dell Laptop)

I think the only thing that will not really work is the wireless card.

Am going to work with it more these next few days.

That is because windows has that side of market.

Well worked with ubuntu and got my video dirvers installed and was even emulating WOW (World of Warcraft). But I have no time to tweak at the moment so I went back to my 100gb windows HDD.

I think that just about the easiest version of linux for winders users is SUSE.  It just has so much stuff that makes using a command line seem way too hard.  And running games becomes easy with Cedega.  It can be compiled from source(good luck) or bought.  But, if you can find an old version, it is perfectly legal to use it under the license.  I guess paying for it is just a subscription service to the newest updates.  This is the kind of box I run at home, and I only use windows for a couple of things.  At school, I'm running redhat 7.2, that ones fun for people who love command line.

Yeah, suse is cool cause it has all of the drivers and stuff mostly.

Well, I decided to reload my machine again. (Compulsive too) Well windows would not let me active my Key!! (Done it to many times) So I was like "I am not talking to no indian for an hour for a 40 diget code, Can't understand em anyway!" (Not Racist either), so I installed Ubuntu on my 100GB. Well, after install I followed some suggestions and got my wireless card working. Also installed my video card drivers (Geforce FX 5200GO), wine runs WoW really well and I can download my music, Ipod function is flawless (cept podcasts) and I can watch all video types (So far).

I think I will never go back to windows. Only thing I have to do now is work on my Printer drivers. (Lexmark doesn't make linux drivers).

Just thought I would reserect this thread! LOL

do a google for the model number of your printer and linux. You should find one that works.
