Generally changing to a synthetic fluid is an at your own risk proposition in a used unit.Not that the fluid is bad,But what it can do to an old trans is the issue.

Fluids are different only due to the types of materials the internal clutches and bands are made up of. The Dextron III replaced all the different types of fluid. In the 80's and early 90's it was a s shoot trying to find your fluid on the shelf of any given parts store. There were like 6 or 7 types of tranny fluid until the dextron/mercon III reared it's ugly head and made everything shift like grandma's caprice. Type F makes trannys shift really hard for just a fluid change, it's basically the same make up as the B&M trick shift tranny fluid......
