Misc Tech / Dam
We have a customer with an explorer. 1998. It had a very unusual issue. It used to crank fine then act like the timing was advanced and started to lug before starting. We checked everything no codes and of course no timing as it is electronic. Well today we got a call and the car finally busted the starter drive. O we are at a loss to what is wrong with this car. Me and my head mechanic discussed it and we seem to be on the same page as it is Hydro locking. But why?? It is not coolant because it has lost none. maybe an injector but it never ran rough after starting. it is a 4.0 overhead cam engine. Sorry to say it is a very nice car and to be honest we are at a dead end. the dealer has no clue either. Any input appreciated thanks. We think the injectors are dumping. But why not every time and why does it run perfectly after starting it. just to be clear it cranks normal then just before starting it tries to crank hard and you can hear it back kicking before it starts. And it is very inconsistent. It can go for months or days no rhyme or reason, Thoughts gentlemen

Misc Tech / Welding
I have been welding for 50 years all kind. But yesterday a friend of mine wanted a O2 fitting welded in his engine pipe on his ranchero. So out comes the MIG and i drilled the hole and tried to weld it to the pipe. Well to my surprise no dice. The flame was so bright and the welds were py. So what happened. I accomplished the task but one of the worst welding jobs i have ever done, The Shielding gas was on and the heat was correct. My buddy is a welder and he said those old engine piper were aluminized and do not take to welding. Any experience with this. I am pissed at Myself for doing a bad job on that thing. Opinions gentlemen

Electrical Tech / Help !!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have a problem with an exotic car. THE HORN. Now i know some will say hay RENZO you are the Man and WTF. So here goes. This car was completely restored and brought to us for some minor issues. I repaired them all except the HORN. The Horn is a FIAMM air horn from the factory. But here is the issue!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The horn is blown by the signal light handle. Push it in and it is how it BLOWS. BUT GET THIS!!!! The horn lead has a ground on it when not pushed. When you push it to activate the horn the Ground is removed. WTF. So i need a circuit to make this work. Please feel free to post anything you could think of that will work. I think 2 5 pr0ng relays will do it. Suggestions anyone!!!

Lounge / Velocity car builds
I watch Velocity all the time and i am amazed at how fast they build those cars. They must only last paint wise for a couple of years. They do not bake out the plastic or let it settle. That is very important and naturally they are all professionals. Or maybe not all are professionals? Dont get me wrong they build some great stuff and not knocking them . But why is it every time they first try and start the engines they never start the first time. Fire spews out of the carbs and endless cranking. Then they dig in to the engine like army ants . They pull the valve covers check the valve lash talk to each other then finally figure out the Distributor is in wrong. They fix it during the commercial and all is good in the world. I personally have an ongoing bet with people that my engines start on the first crank. Me and my dad used to do this all the time after a rebuild. It just puzzles me that all these professionals can not have a first time start on a fresh engine. Just something i noticed not being critical but just makes me laugh a lot. Your thoughts gentleman

Lounge / Hiring apprentices
As you might know i use a couple of kids from neighboring school as a work program for the town. They normally are very sharp and knowledgeable. They also have several ASE certifications. SO yesterday i got a young chap and put him on a problem. He diagnosed it correctly and spot on. He located an EVAP leak in a car and i told him to proceed to fix it. The tank had to be removed for access to the leak. So a few minutes later he was not removing the tank?? What was with that? So i spoke to him and he said they never did that in school and he did not know how to do it?? WHAT i was thinking to myself. This kid had 5 ASE certifications and was sharp as a tack. But it just goes to show you that having ASE certifications means nothing. But many places wont hire you if you do not have them. Thoughts on this would be appreciated. Just for the record we both removed the tank and the lad is working out just fine.

Misc Tech / Brake mods
Doing a full brake mod on a 69 Chevelle and thought you guys would like to see how i do it. First remove all the stock junk including all valves and lines. Then fab up with copper ferrous lines . Mount a valve and go from there.

Here is the Vette master installed in the Chevelle with a new booster and my trademark spiraled lines. Note the valve has easy access for adjustments. In truth i have never see many cars that duplicate my style in line instillation. But some say it is my trade mark and look for it at shows. Once they see that they assume we did the car. just saying people E Mail me all the time on this. Normally people say hay RENZO saw another car you guys did this weekend. The brake system gave it away. Then they ask me to see the tool that made the spirals. I laugh and tell them the tool is top secret. Then they offer to pay me to make them one. Seriously i make them by hand. So now i tell people the secret tool is always hidden in the shop.  Sounds good anyway and just thought you guys would get a laugh at it. have a great day .

Lounge / Everyone makes mistakes
bellow is a NISSAN that was recalled by the dealer for warped rotors. Chris is my neighbor and i told him i would do it for him for free. His wife insisted on using the dealer. This is the result. They spun the caliper over while installing it and the hose rubbed through the sway bar  bolt and he lost the rear brakes. Always double check everything especially the brakes. By the way the dealer refused to fix it and said they were not at fault. I repaired the car and all is well in Asian car land.

Lounge / Wife put her foot down
My wife wanted a new vehicle for the past few weeks so she told me not to buy anything fast or loud. Now we got rid of our other car and she told me we need a big SUV  for vacations and the grand kids stuff and to haul stuff. And nothing speedy loud or anything with a stick. So i told her how about a JEEP. Now you are talking she said they are not fast or loud. So here it is a Jeep and she loves it and so do I. She did mention that it was PEPPY and a bit loud in the exhaust. And also asked me why it was so low to the ground compared to other jeeps she looked at. Told her jeeps have a loud exhaust system and they were peppy because they were fuel injected. And the springs were to light on this model. She looked at me funny and said all cars are fuel injected and jeeps are much higher than this one whats up. Nothing i said do you like it. She said yes but it was very peppy she said again wit a strange look on her face. I think she knew something was up but she was not sure yet . SRT8 WOW this thing is OUTRAGEOUS AND FAST AS HELL. Please GOD forgive me for lying to my wife. have a great weekend guys.
