Weird things with the fuel????

I have a 85 5.0 and ever since I got it back in June ($250) it has had this weird problem. Although I have her running pretty smoothly now, something is still not right.

From a dead stop (stop light or stop sign), if I punch it she stalls. I had to let her get herself up to about 4 mph before beginning to accelerate.

Also...

In the morning (when the engine is cold) it starts up with no problem but quickly putters out unless I give it a little gas steadily until she can hold her own.

I can only imagine that these 2 issues are related but who nows. This car had been rather abused before I got her but she rides strong. When I eventually get her to highway speeds she wants to go so much faster but i'm a little afraid right now. Only got her to 70 mph so far and the engine starts to sound strained.

Help please....

PS.... I have upgraded to premium gas and changed the fuel filter. I even added some Heet the other day.
