Title: How fast is your computer?
Post by: Haystack on October 17, 2004, 11:30:20 PM
I am curious as to what types, speeds, and specs that everyone here has. I just think it would be cool to see how we all sit.
I have over 10 computers so i am just going to list this one.
266mhz p2 96megs of ram 8gig hard drive dvd player, surround sound(5.1), and a 1000(supposedally)watt sound system with sub. it is more along the lines of 100 to 150 watts.dsl internet(sucks) at 256k download. multipul network hups, most of my computers are older, but they work.  also this is the second computer that i have built for my self. i keep it in good working order.
thanks

My Desktop, P3 1 GHZ 512 MB ram, 80 GB drive, 40 GB drive shared with laptop over a wireless network. My laptop is a P3 1.06GHz also with 512 MB ram and a 20GB drive. Both systems run xp pro. My desktop runs soooo good, never had any problems with it. I was going to upgrade the desktop this year but with cable internet, and I don't do any gaming on it she does everything I need her to do. Oh yeah and I got a nice 17.4" flat panel which pretty much ate up the money I had set a side to upgrade the cpu..  :D

Pentiums =  :rolleyes:

I've got an Athlon XP 1800+, 256 in SDRAM, 40 and a 20 GB hard drive, old N'vidia GeForce 440MX, Plextor 52x CD-RW, 3Com ethernet card connected to a D-link residential gateway connected to RoadRunner cable.  Currently running WinXP Pro, just recently reinstalled it after a month-long battle with SuSe Linux to live happily with my sound card.  Oh, almost forgot, Viewsonic 19" flatscreen (not flat-panel) monitor.  It's pretty bad when your monitor's an inch smaller than your TV.

Pentiums = Nvidia cards = Chevrolets.. in other words, NOT IN MY HOUSE! :P

I've been outta the Video Card scene for a while... what's out there that's better than an Nvidia?
Title: Re: How fast is your computer?

my favorite mother boards and video cards are nvida. just like 3 com is the ultimate in network.i have three nvida mother boards and 6 video cards. you have to at least be pro amd, because if anything intel is more like chevy then nvida is
*** EDIT
also i have a 22" monitor off of a mac. it has a minimum resolution of 1024X768, and i have never met its limit. every video card that i have had isnt better then that monitor. some guys sold it to my dad for $50. they thought it was broken because it dosent display in dos mode.

84kat, i have two computers with basically identical setups, also with suse linux(in my opinion it is more trouble then its worth).

I know not much 'bout spoogepuderz

I do know its a POS (probabally more operators fault than machine but......)

HP (I know...)
2.7 GHZ intel celron (I know....)
17" monitor
Thats about all I know off the top of my head but I did find this on the internet. Gave me a good laugh.

Powerful Workstation! HP A305W Desktop

Power. Speed. Maximum performance. They’re all at your fingertips with the HP A305W desktop, the muscular, blazing-fast workstation computer built to optimize productivity for the executive, small business owner, home user or student who must rely on phenomenal performance to keep a step ahead of the competition. Powered by a smooth, extraordinarily efficient Intel® Celeron® 2.7 GHz processor bolstered by exceptionally speedy 256MB DDR memory and a huge 40GB hard drive, as well as a top-notch CD-RW drive, the A305W has the agility, might and storage capacity to cruise through any of today’s most complex applications and stands ready to breeze through the tough challenges of tomorrow’s technology
.

On more than one occasion I almost tossed the tower out the door and followed it with a claw hammer.....I hate my  computer

I've had NVIDIA motherboards and video cards that were . (from major name brands)

I've had VIA motherboards that were . (also from major name brands)

If you're into the whole AMD thing, as I am, there really aren't any good chipsets out there for them. The best AMD mobo I've ever owned had the AMD-760 (original Athlon) chipset on it. That's one thing I wish AMD would do, is stop replying on third-party hacks.

I don't really know what the current g match with video cards is.. all I know is that, when I bought my Radeon 9700 Pro, it was THE best card on the market. I get my drivers from Omega Corner, or whatever the site is called now, but it works great. I used to have problems crashing planes in Battlefield: 1942 because I'd get caught up watching the reflections off the Mustangs' wings when I should've been concentrating on flying. Everything was smooth and looked incredible.

EDIT: I'll tell ya, I'd rather go without a computer at all than be stuck with Intel and/or Nvidia product in my PC. If it should ever come to pass that either of those companies runs all the competition out of business, I won't upgrade my PC past whatever I have at that point. (probably an Athlon64, along with this video card)

Current system:
IBM 300GL p166 with 64Mb RAM, 2Gb HD, 2Mb vid.

"New" system in the works:
Asus T2P4 w p233mmx + 128Mb + 6Gb + 8Mb vid.
(All but memory found in local computer store's dumpster on various days)

If anything blows up, I've still got 18 power suppies, 16 Mboards, half a dozen vid cards, a box of NICs, and drawers full of smaller HD's and other "obsolete" stuff (all compliments of the dumpster). Maybe I'll build my own Internet in the living room with the "obsolete" 9-port 10base-T hub.  :p

They say a picture is worth a 1000 words(screwdriver is used to acess the on/off sw, and 3/8" wrench needs to go back to tool box)..... Anyway my Bird is a hellva lot faster than my computer. I put it together the year(2000) after I built the Bird. Upgraded the memory and inst the burner a couple of years ago.

Its a AMD K2 500MHZ
Generic PC-100 Mother Board (VIA chipset, on board video, audio, 10/100 network adaptor)
256 Ram
20 Gig HD
Sony CD burner
Windows ME (hey it never crashes more than 2-3 times a week)  :(
audio fed to a 1984 receiver/amp 30 watts RMS per channel
pair of AIWA speakers pirated from a LARGE compact stereo system

Recently picked up a  700 MHZ P-III someone had kicked to the curb(has bad HD), thinkin' about up gradin'  :D

1700+ tbredA (not overclocked as much as I used to), 1GB hyperx pc3500, ti4200(no longer running at 315/650 though its was stable up to 315/710), 160GB and 40GB harddrives, XP Pro on original installation

That's all that really matters in computers now. Case has a car-like finish but I try to hide the window the case came with. Its near impossible to get cases now without huge holes in the side. The system's about 2 years old and beginning to show its age. It once was near top of the line along with the watercooling setup it once ran. Now I don't care because 1) I quit playing competitive FPS games and such 5 years ago when they went downhill and 2) it seems that computers no longer double in speed every 18 months. 2 years ago Intel released its 3.06GHz processor and look where they're at now. Their 3.6GHz processor is far from double the clock speed or processing power. Decreasing transistor size doesn't do as much as it used to in the days of .25 -> .18 micron. Dual core processors should be the next big thing and even then, I doubt the speeds will ramp up.

Anyways, yeah. I could use an upgrade about now to a 3500+/MHz processor and a newer videocard but they'll have to wait until next year

Alas, he did not leave it :(

My 1st PC was Commodore Vic-20 then comes C-64 (With external cassette player as HD and compatible with our Atari games...) :giggle: :giggle:

My 2nd was TRS80-IV (**cough**Portable**cough**, green and black screen with 2x 360kb drives)

My 3rd was an old recycled schlong server with 10 workstations... (8 inches disquettes and HD was removable 18" Plated PCB Disk)..... The kind of beast that make the light going down when putting it ON.... :giggle:

My 4th was :
8086 XT 8Mhz
512k Ram
10mb HD
Monochrome Video (Amber)

My 5th was :
Tandy 2500XL
12Mhz **TURBO** :giggle:
2mb ram,
256k Trident VGA
100mb HD
My dad payed 5000$ for it at RadioS in  +/- 1990

I Got my load of 386SX/DX, 486, Pentiums.... Even ran a B.B.S. with messaging/Warez download for those who knows what im talking about...
OMG 1.44mb at 2400bps was taking 1 hours !!!!!
I Remember i paid over 500$ for 2x BOCA 14.4kbps modem for my board at the time.....
Those where horrible to configure with all manual hardware adressing IRQ, DMA on every Controller, Sound Card, and CD-ROM Card because drives werent IDE....
