Smog pump/EGR question, not technical

Im taking my 3.8 out of my car to do some frame work, and im wondering what is the point of the smog pump?  It seems its just sucking in air and blowing it out the exhaust, pumping air into the vacuum tee along the way...

pulls exhaust from the metal tube that is after your Y pipe and pumps it back into the intake for a second reburn.

involves the black, white, tan and green vac lines, each of which have thier very own dedicated solenoid behind the coolant fill tank.

i would recommend keeping the system on board and short belt your motor, kinda a little different on the v6 but i did it on my old CFI.

the red vac line feeds the solenoid bank,, when electrical signals are triggered, then the spring loaded check valves in each individual solenoid open a path for suction down each respective emissions device as required.
