Lounge / Let's play how much is this Cougar worth!
This car has been on my local Craigslist for awhile. It's an 88 V6 with 105,000 miles. The guy has it priced at $3595. The interior is nice but it's a low option car and has rust on the lower fenders, door bottoms, and lower quarter panels. It's not moving so it's obviously priced too high. I'm thinking it's maybe a $1500 car on a good day. Thoughts? Here's the link, the text of the ad, and some pictures.

Extra nice 1988 Mercury Cougar LS 2dr. sedan, red w/red cloth interior. One owner car and always garage kept. 105,000 easy miles. (about 3,500/year) Automatic trans. Good body and paint with normal chips and scratches and some minor rust. Nice for a restoration. Completely stock including radio and hubcaps. Original window sticker and hubcaps lock and owner's manual. Newer battery, water pump and heater core and front struts. Had working A/C until I changed the heater core and now will require refill of new type R-34a. Pwr windows, seats, cruise control. Pwr brakes and steering. Must see. Local car. 3.8 V6. See the photos and ask questions. Excellent tires and brakes. Extra clean trunk and interior carpets. Trade for clean Jeep Cherokee, truck or van considered. Only cash offers in person will be considered. This is a pretty nice car w/ like new tires so I would like to trade for the same; not my nice car for some wreck with broken glass ripped seats.... you ge the idea. Good bright speedometer.

It sure doesn't look like a $3595 car to me but maybe I've been out of the used car game too long.

Other Vehicles / Well got us a new daily driver
Since we bought our 2012 Mustang it's been an April-November car only, to keep it out of the salt. My wife loves the thing just about as much as I love the Thunderbird so she plans on keeping indefinitely. Being that as such she needs a winter/foul weather driver. I used to work close to home so we managed easily in the winter with the Focus. I got a promotion this year which necessitates me driving 8 miles to work every day. This put us in a bind for a car for her. Well we fixed that problem yesterday:

2017 Honda Accord EX-L V6. We looked at a 2017 Fusion Sport. It was faster than the Accord but couldn't justify it because of the horrible gas mileage (17 city) and the fact that you have to run 93 octane in the Sport to get full power. The Accord is only .5 second slower to 60 mph (6.2 vs 5.6 for the Sport) but it's still plenty fast enough to stomp most cars on the road. Plus it's fun to drive. My parent's have had a string of Accords before switching to Fusions and they've had no trouble with them. Plus the Accord is blue, so it fits with the Focus and Mustang. The Thunderbird is the only non-blue car we own :hick:.

T-Bird/Cougar Parts & Cars WANTED / NOS or used, flat, 87-88 Thunderbird/Cougar body side moldings
I'm looking for a couple NOS or used, flat, metal backing intact, 87-88 Thunderbird/Cougar body side moldings. They must be NOS and unused or used, flat, metal backing intact. I'm  planning on having my Thunderbird painted in the spring of 2017 and I want to replace the moldings on the car. I have 4 pieces I'm having a hard time finding. They are as follows:

Driver side: the door molding and the molding in front of the rear wheel on the quarter panel (circled in yellow in the picture).

Passenger side: the molding behind the front wheel on the fender and the molding in front of the rear wheel on the quarter panel (circled in yellow in the picture).

I want NOS unused parts or used, flat, metal backing intact, moldings and I'm willing to pay for them :D. If you have used molding I want pictures ;)

94K miles. Being it's a Chicago suburb car it's got some rust. You can see it in the pictures. Only wants $1350 but probably needs a bunch of body/chassis work due to the rust, at least from what I see in the pictures.

Body/Appearance/Interior / Leather wrapped Turbo Coupe steering wheel?
Just wondering but has anyone had an 85-88 Turbo Coupe steering wheel leather wrapped? I have a Turbo Coupe steering wheel but I'm reluctant to replace my factory steering wheel with it as it is not leather wrapped like the LX steering wheel. I'm thinking of having a local upholstery shop wrap the wheel in black leather but I'm not sure how it would look. I'm hopping someone here has attempted what I want to do just to get an idea of how the finished product would look.

Electrical Tech / Adding an auto dim rear view mirror
I've grown to really like the auto dim rear view mirror in my 1991 Lincoln Mark VII. The 90-92 Mark VIIs had a modern style electro-chromatic auto dim rear view mirror as an option, replacing the goofy 84-89 mechanical auto dim rear view mirror. It's great at night as you don't have to flip the little tab below the rear view mirror when someone with modern ultra bright headlamps is driving behind your car. Plus the mirror has a range of dimming ability instead of just "on or off" like the factory manual mirror in 83-88 Thunderbirds/Cougars. The other nice feature is that the 90-92 Mark VII auto dim rear view mirror has a mounting tab for the factory headlamp dimmer sensor.

I was able to procure the auto dim rear view mirror from a 1990 Mark VII and install it in my Thunderbird. It was a pretty easy exercise. Make sure you get the mirror connector plug otherwise you're SOL on connecting the mirror. Looking at the back of the mirror the connector has three wires.

Left to right the wires are: power, ground, and reverse off. Obviously the power wire is connected to a 12V switched ignition source and the ground is, well, connected to a ground. Those are the only required connections for the mirror to function. The third wire, reverse off, turns the mirror off when the car is placed into reverse. This wire is optional as the mirror will function without it connected. To have this function work you have to connect this wire to the backup lamp power wire.

So once you make a couple connections you can have a modern electro-chromatic auto dim rear view mirror that works with the auto headlamp dimmer sensor. It looks factory as well because it was factory fitted to Lincoln Mark VIIs. I really like this simple modification.

Suspension/Steering / Rear suspension project.
Well after waiting 6 weeks the adjustable extreme duty rear control arms I order from Maximum Motorsports arrived yesterday. These are the arms that have spherical bushings on each end.

I'll be using 98 Mustang GT rear springs with these arms along with some brand new Gabriel Quad-Shocks I installed this past winter.

I'm pretty sure this should eliminate the last vestiges of wheel hop and let the car hook off the line. I'll hopefully get the rear arms swapped on this weekend. Of course the only rusty bolts on my Thunderbird are the ones that hold the front of the rear control arm to the frame. When I swapped the 8.8 axle in last fall the control arm to axle bolts came out like butter. Heck they even looked brand new. I'm just hoping I can get the front bolts out as easily. If not it's off to the local mechanic :hick:

BTW the rear springs in the above picture are original to the car. Yes they are un-rusty and still have the factory coating and spring tags on them....

Lounge / Hmm this is interesting
So my wife and I have been casually looking at 4 door mid/full size sedans. We've been looking at front wheel drive sedans as we are looking for something that I won't get the itch to "mod", other wise the obvious answer is 5.7 Charger R/T (even though I'm weary of Chrysler products as they tend to be POS cars). We're looking to buy something in late 2016 or early 2017, around the time her Mustang goes back to sitting for the winter. The front runner thus far has been the Accord V6 due to it being affordable (~32K) and pretty  quick for a FWD mid size car (0-60 in 5.8 seconds is only .4 seconds behind the Thunderbird). However Ford has thrown a wrench in the plans: http://www.roadandtrack.com/car-shows/detroit-auto-show/news/a27866/2017-ford-fusion-sport-debuts-detroit/

2017 Fusion Sport has a 2.7 twin-turbo V6 with 325hp and all wheel drive for a projected $34k. I'm thinking wait it out and see if their are any reliability issues but it looks pretty  tempting. It should be a  rocket and practical to boot. I'm really hoping it drives better than the Accord V6, so as to make it an easier decision ;)

Lounge / So you can buy brand new Mustang Tri-Bar wheels now.....
Apparently someone decided that it would be a good idea to reproduce the 93 Cobra R and 94-95 Mustang GT Tri-Bar wheels in 4 and 5 lug: https://lmr.com/products/mustang-93-cobra-r-tri-bar-wheels-7993

These things were ugly in the mid 90's are are still ugly today. Why do't they do reproductions of the 94-96 Mustang Cobra 17 inch wheels in 4 or 5 lug? Those were attractive wheels. Or maybe even some 17"x8" or 17"x9" 86-93 "10 hole" wheels. That would be cool. Tri-Bars? No thanks.
