scored an aod out of a 92 mustang. is it a direct bolt on in my sport or is something different?
Not sure but that may be an AOD-E which if it is, it requires a computer to shift it.
Same tranny, bolt right in. I don't think the fox mustangs ever had the aod-e.:D
Not till the '94s anyway... (OK they are SN95s)... Still basically a Fox...
one last question? I calles a local installer and he told me I would have to change the tailshaft in the tranny for it to work becquse the mustangs taileshaft is shorter. any truth in that?
I thought all passenger car aod's were the same except the aod-e
The Mark VII got a longer tailshaft, but the Mustang one should be the same as the Cougar/Tbird one.
You don't have to change it. The Mustang and T-Bird/Cougar AOD's have identical sized tailshafts. The Mark VII one is longer.
then you run into the whole floor shifter column shifter thing.
well his info said he has a 88 sport, so he should be set to go.
Exactly...it's virtually the same transmission. The only differences that my mechanic has ever found between a Mustang AOD and all the other AOD's is the addition of a few more clutches for firmer shifting. And that can be done to any AOD.
thanx for the help guys. i guess he was just tryin to beat me out of some money.
the B overdrive servo also . and his 92 will have the "beter" valve bodie design
one final question. ive decided to try to do it in my friends garage to save alittle cash. that being said, he said hes never done it in a Ford and is kinda unsure how easy or hard it may be. does anybody have like a how-to diagram or something that we can maybe use.
make sure to check the speedo gear. I know mustangs use a cable drive speedometer while the tbirds have electronic senser, i am unsure if all stangs had it though.
AOD is one of the easiest trannys to do. Especially in a FOX. Take out the driveshaft, 12mm 12 point. Take off front dust shield, remove 4 T/C nuts, they should be 9/16, and Ford suggests to replace with new, but I never have and have yet to have one come loose. disconnect shift linkage and TV cable, they just snap onto the trans shifter input. Shift cable might be held on with a 13mm nut. Support rear of trans, remove crossmember, and lower rear of trans. Then you can get to the bell housing bolts. You might need a medium prybar to get the bellhousing off of the dowels if the trans has never been out before. You will need to have a jack under the trans before you pull it off of the dowels, or you might get smushed. Oh yeah, pull off the front part of the exhaust before you do anything, the part that goes from the manifolds to the Y. Should take you about a full day on the ground, especially if you have never done one before. I can R&R one on a lift in about 3 hours, and that includes butt scratching time.
Direct replacement, 2 hours work your done, The only issue you might have is the neutral safety switch connector. I cant remeber what year you car was but my 85 (V6) had a different pin out then the 92 mustang (V8) mine came from. But its is an easy fix either swipe a connector off another car or bypass it.
Is the kickdown a cablee on the Mustang and a long lever on the TBird? Will this be a complication?
