speaker recommendations

Looking for a decent set of 6x9's and 4's for the 'sprunt' just picked up a JVC KD-AR760 head unit (FREE! :D ) a Jensen A34XP 360 watt amp(really cheap) and a couple Sony XS-L101PS 10" subs (only one is installed right now till I get another box and a second or bigger amp) and now I need some decent mid priced ... mids

Was looking at the pioneers at wal*mart, a buddy got a pair of the 6x9's and they sound pretty good but i'm not sure about the 4's. Looked at a nice set of JL 4's where I got my head unit but they were $149 a set and the guy couldnt go any lower than $119 which is about twice as much as i'm willing to spend (already have $500 worth of stereo in this $100 car) so what are your favorites? as you can see I dont really have any brand preferences

And no I havnt disowned the t-bird, I actually took it out and stretched its legs yesterday, after a lil TLC she fired right up and spit gravel at the 'sprunt'

so alls good :)

I dont get online very often lately due to work and women (working 16 hours a day doesnt leave much time to play... with anything) so gimme time to reply

I am not impressed with pioneer speakers, I really like their cd players but I have not had good luck with their speakers. I had a set of 4x10's in an s10 which are a bad design anyways and 6x8's in my Ranger and they handle can't handle the power my old jvc deck is putting out. I have had really good luck and quite impressed with Polk speakers, ecspecially their 6x9's. I have my amp pushing them and no distortion! Their 3x5's sound good in the dash too.

I'm a Rockford fan all the way. But for the love of god, cheap is not the way to go. Your better off saving and then getting the good stuff. I learned the hard way. My shiznitmart pioneers blew right off. I would definetly save up for the JL 4s and maybe some matching 6x9s. whitebestxr7 is right Polk is good. Just depends on your budget and what you want.

I thought there would be more replies.. I would like to be able to spend $120 on a pair of 4's and $200+ on a pair of 6x9's but its gonna be at least a few moths before I would be able to do even afford that. i'm going to be going down to vancouver in a month and have to try and save some money for that but I would still like to have a set of speakers in the car till then. right now i've got a pair of factory 6x9's out of a friends 93 sunbird and 6x4's from a 90's ford p/u (premium sound) in there and it is ok but... meh you know

Any opinions about kenwood speakers? or jvc? theyre a litle more moderatally priced but I would like to her more peoples personal experiences before I buy anything else, i dont know a whole lot about car audio so any help is appreciated.

If you are looking for a good set of speakers infinity makes the reference series speakers wich are really good if you want decent speakers for a good price and the kappa series which are great if you are looking for a little higher end speakers you can check crutchfield.com to see what I'm talking about. I ran 150rms to each of my kappa 6x9's for a year before I cracked the cone on one of them. And as stated before, polk is a good way to go also.

I'm not going to give you any recommendations because I don't have a lot of experience buying and installing speakers.. but I will say this:

I've only put in or had put in six different speakers in the last 11 years.. four of them Pioneer, two of them Cerwin Vega. I was happy with all of them.. and I'll probably get four more Pioneers for my LSC in the foreseeable future. I am aware that it's not a favored brand by people who do a lot of stuff with stereos, but hey.. I have a Pioneer deck and I'm happy with it, and I was happy with my past Pioneer speakers. I have no reason to believe that I'll be disappointed by them next time around. Then again, I'm mostly happy with my Pioneer deck hooked to the stock Premium Sound speakers on my '89 LSC now. I'm just not an audiophile or whatever. As long as I don't have to listen to the A/C blower running for three or four hours on a road trip, and as long as the system doesn't sound completely like ass, I'm happy.

I'm running 3.5" Infinity Reference's up front and 6x8 Pioneer Rev's in the back. Awesome clarity with little to no distortion at high volume, and excelent bass response to the point that I don't feel the need to buy a subwoofer. I do believe both companies have offering's from those series in the sizes you're looking for, and if they seem a bit pricy from a place like Crutchfield or Sound Domain, take a trip over to ebay, you should find the exact same models new for nearly half the price.

I have Pioneer 6x8's in my rear deck and 6 1/2's in the doors (never did get any mids for the dash), and a Sony Xplod CD player that I think is about 25 watts per channel RMS. I like it, it sounds good and I really get some decent bass from the 6x8's.

As others have said, NO CHEAP THINGS!!!! And for the love of god, If its sold in a chain store ( I.E. Best Buy, WALMART

, Circuit City, ect...) STAY AWAY!!! Go to a stereo shop and get it done right the first time. And you do get what you pay for, trust me. I've had every kind of stereo system in my cars over the years, and while sony and pioneer USED to be the cutting edge, they are absolute right now. Jensen doesnt even warrent a nasty comment, they are so bad. Now, on to the good stuff.

Infinity is a great entry level brand to start with. good construction, great warentee, and outstanding customer support. Referance series are a great speaker, but the infinity Kappas are a lot better buy for the money. Cerwin vega speakers are about on par with Infinity. Both Good brands. Polk is a little better quality than the previous two brands, in my opinion. they are a tighter sounding speaker, and they seem to handle amplification better. Kenwood makes some OKAY decks, and so does JVC. I am not impressed at all with the sound of their speakers, however. Like everyone is saying though, its all on your budget.

Now..... this is what i'm going with in the new t-bird. The old huge stereo in the older 87 is staying in it, since my wife and i are restoring it for her. all that means is that i'm getting a new stereo for myself! LOL

head unit is an Eclipse 8 Volt deck. MANY MANY features, Excellent power, Dedicated Sub pre-outs with level control, MP3 playback, Sirrius Ready, ect... I'll post the link.

it has a feature called "Area Shot" basicly its a small nav unit built into the deck, and an optional GPS unit that attatches. you download driving directions to a memory stick from sony and slide it into the reader built into the deck. Viola, Navigation.

I'm going with a set of JL Audio XR series components. VERY VERY good speakers for the money, about 350 for the front set. Tight bass, Sweet hights, and Smooth mids. I cant say enought about them.

For the Sub, and its only going to need ONE......

Its JL again. A 12" W6 in a custom sealed Box. VERY VERY good power handling... I'm going to put 1000 watts to it. Clear Crisp bass, No Distortion, and excellent SQ (Sound Quality) Proporties.

All in all, this system with a couple of Guages mounted where the old EQ was, is budgeted at 3600 bucks. It will probly end up being closer to 3000. i just made room for other things if i want them, like a capacitor, or an in-trunk EQ block. thats INSTALLED with a JL Amp kit, all wiring intalled, and with a custom single box enclosure in the trunk.....with sound deadening. Also, the shop I have a relationship with is throwing in a Viper 5000 car alarm for free. Paging remote, shock and proximity sensors, Starter cut off, mercury switches for the trunk and hood, door-pop switches. Very nice.

SO.... you can see i take this stuff seriously. LOL :D Like i said, you can do mild to wild, but if i were you, I'd do it only once. and do it right. I'll post pictures of the complete system from stock to new, and the installation photos too. It goes in about 3 months from now, when i finally get back from iraq for good.

Three grand worth of stuff some crackhead would bend my door frames or break my window to get, just to sell for their next fix.. that's kinda how I look at it if I were to ever consider buying that much stereo stuff.

hey man Ill give you a big help here. If you are handy at all and can read words and illistrations go to crutchfield.com. Order a catalog and look through there. I myself bought 3-way kenwood 6X9's and alpine's in the front. It sounds better then my mom's new regal monsoon system. At crutchfield you can see what fits your car and also get free harnesses and literature on how to do the stuff. I found it to be a big help. more so than asking people who can't hear music but only listen to it. Because pesonally I think pioneer and rockford suck, but thats just me. good luck!
