Double Din Stereos?

Does anyone have a double din stereo in the AeroBird/Cougar?  The center stack would be easy to modify for this type of installation.  I'm also wondering if you'd have to use an adapted plate to install one.

I never have been a fan of them.  I just like the look of a double din much better.

"Easy to modify"? The top slot isn't very deep, using the two middle slots requiring mangling up the bezel to get rid of the cross beam. At that point, you either need to have your hvac controls on the very bottom, or use a rotary unit and install it in the top slot. I found it easier to  just fabricate a LCD screen into the top two slots and run a carpc :p

You know what?  I didn't think about the lack of depth of the top slot.  That's a great point.  I guess installing a double din won't be an option for me then.

I say you still try to install it someway. It may requiring completely butchering up the trim, but nothing some filler, sanding, and paint can't make look decent enough. What about tilting the unit down at the back(upward at you), moving it as far down as possible (without hitting the brace), and then grinding away at the thing until you have a nice angle to see the screen? It's hard to describe, but some tape could make it simple to visualize  and provide a surface to possibly apply some fiberglass to?

I don't know why I didn't think of this sooner, but I need to get some spare trim pieces as some of these ideas that just popped into my head, if they look decent, would have made my carpc screen install MUCH easier.

Between the two top slots, cut out the center bit. Adhere a bezel for the screen to the FRONT of the fake brushed aluminum/woodgrain surface. Stretch some material from the inside of the bezel, over the outside of the trim piece, the same way people make speaker pods, and start glassing it in place. Sanding this would be quite easy due to there being nothing but positive surfaces to sand. Then just clean it up to your liking, primer, and paint.

Not easy, but it's much easier than other things I've tried. The top two slots of the center trim is VERY tall, so there is room to work...

You can put a double din in without cutting onto the air duct. Just keep the radio towards the bottom and push the wire harness thats in the way upwards and it'll fit. Here's a Pioneer D3 I put in my bird a few years ago.

I just installed Alpine's new radio in my Mustang. It's bigger than double din(8" screen). I'm confident that it'll fit in the birds dash.

Might wanna make sure you don't end up with too much heat behind the stereo, you want a little bit of space around the deck inside to help with cooling. I am sure its probably ok, but I had a couple decks burn up before and I get skittish about stuffing the biggest deck I can find into my dash. Also you wanna make sure that none of your blower controls get interfeared with, you can wreck stuff by just pushing and cramming something in there just to fit. Take your time and think before you cut, once you hack stuff up it is hard to change it back to the way it was. Around my neck of the woods it is not like I can drive to a junkyard and find a fox tbird or cougar, they are getting scarce.
