Win XP SP2 problems

OK I spent 50 minuites on the phone with Rajgopal  Krishna (figures :bs: ) from the windows xp service pack 2 help dept. and never figured out the problem.

The problem is that everytime I install sp2 my computer will not log onto the internet, msn messenger will work fine, I can update spybot, norton or anything else but it will not connect. I have tried re-installing explorer, netscape and some other browser I got on disk from my isp but none of them work. I have spent just as much time on the phone with my isp and have determined it has nothing to do with the modem or the way it is set up.

Think it may have something to do with nortons firewall and sp2's firewall clashing but dont want to have to install sp2, play around with it, realize I know nothing about computers, run system restore or format my hd, then re-install all my software and updates just to try again! I cant even remember how many times I've already done that so I am hopeing someone here will know where to start  Please?

Im guessing....
Did you try without Norton Firewall installed? What versions you have?

Since SP2 includes a firewall, if you decide to use norton, be sure to disable one of them.... (I kept Norton as Firewall)
I know the NortonSystemWork 2005 will ask for you if you want to disable Microsoft Firewall when installing (Its say Recommended)... If you are running 2004 or less, it may cause the trouble...

I have norton 2003 and when on the phone with windows help we disabled nortons firewall and it worked, for a few minuites I was able to get onto the internet but then it started doing the same thing again! maybe norton automatically enables its firewall after a certain ammount of time :dunno:  all I know is that without sp2 I keep getting viruses and have to keep removing them.

W32.Korgo.S
W32.Korgo.V
W32.Spybot.Worm

Everytime I restart, after about 5 minuites norton finds one or two of those on my  :macgun: computer (15 reports so far)

Forget any other version of Norton except the 2005 with SP2...

And also get SpySweeper (http://www.Webroot.com) <<---- VERY RECOMMENDED
You also need to get rid of those SpyWare on your PC....

Ok so I'm still here so I think I fixed it  I downloaded AVG and installed it, deleted norton and anything to do with norton, scanned for viruses with AVG and found a trojan horse that norton did not :slap: then I installed sp2 and everything works great :tg:  Also found out that norton was the reason that my sound card kept ping out  :macgun: "There are no mixer devices available"

Still havnt tried playing vice city but I think it sould work good now aswell!
FYI: I have spybot S&D installed and havn't had any trouble from it so would it be worth it to install spysweeper?

heh, I hate all norton products. Ever since some version of Utilities six years ago that killed my computer when it wanted to fix a "problem", I haven't bothered since. I currently use NOD32 for antivirus, spybot for spyware, and I'm back to zonealarm 4.0 after many small conflicts with other firewalls and ZA5 (can no longer disable the Nagle algorithm in TCP/IP)

From your question, other programs may find things spybot doesn't or fix problems more permanently...I had a problem with spyware a week ago (fresh install of windows, limited programs installed) and a day after I had spybot fix it, it was back (and I didn't use the system for anything other than coming to this board and one other). I don't know how well spysweeper works but it could be worth checking out if you notice spybot having problems permanently clearing out a certain type of spyware. There's one I had before that wouldn't leave regardless of what I tried, reboot after reboot. Adaware deleted it just fine.
