'85 30th Anniversary AOD Tranny not shifting

I have a chance to buy a near mint 1985 T-bird Anniversary with 70,000 miles on it.
The problem is that it is not shifting out of 1st gear.
What might cause this?  I had a '83 T-bird that shifted only from 1st to 2nd.  The problem was with the linkage...the part was inexpensive and cheap to have fixed.
Would this be a similar fix?
I am not a transmission expert...so any possible solutions would be apprecated

Check the TV cable grommet on the throttle body.

It will have a TV rod that goes from the driver side CFI to the transmission.
or......
the same situation down on the transmission linkage.

The plastic grommet can be purchased or home made with a piece of plastic tubing to fill the space.

Thats the only thing outside of the transmission that I know of that causes this problem.

It might be a misadjusted gear shifter as well. I know my porblem after my motor swap was when we connected the floor shift lever was not connected correctly.

if all looks good like tv cables and whatnot,... check the  trans fluid, if its brown or just really dark,.... theres prolly metal shavings in the valve body/ and shift selonoids, causing the selonoid not to work,... you might be able to get a certified used valve body at a local trans parts supplier,(usually comes with selonoids) and then swap the valve bodies flush the cooler, and put new fluid in,...  just make sure you flush it really good, and it may help to install a temporary in line filter(just to catch wutever doesnt flush) ive been learning about trannies since ive dissapeared from the board........ its my job.....

When I swapped my intake, I realized that the whole time I have had this car, there was some vacuum line with a zip tie on it. It was tighter then the stock setup, and the ford dealer says they can't get the fix for it. I guess if it has been okay for 23,000 miles both city and freeway in 6 months, hopefully it will last for a while.

I honestly dont think you could exceed the cost of a new car buy installing new *stock* parts everywhere in your coug our tbird. Its just plain impossible. You could revamp the entire drivetrain/engine/suspenstion and still come out ahead.
