Title: Show off the little stuff!
Post by: Bird351 on June 19, 2005, 03:46:18 PM
Ever do a little cosmetic mod or repaint or touch-up or whatever that you felt like displaying, but didn't think merited its own thread? Well how about throwing it in here along with a little bit on what ya did to it? Who knows, you might inspire someone else to do something.

I'll start it off with this  EFI plate I've been tinkering with off and on for weeks now. Originally I shot it with Wal-Mart flat black and some 500 degree clearcoat. However, I didn't like the texture they put on the lettering.. and I wanted to clean it up in general.

There's almost too many little steps to list.. but a lot of it was trial and error with this being my first try. I'll pick it up at adding the blue to the Ford oval. I taped off everything but the inside of the oval and shot that with (all of the following is Dupli-Color 500 degree engine paint) Ford Blue, let it sit for a couple days, and then sanded off the raised parts. Taped off just the oval, painted the entire plate in 2-3 coats of gloss black, and let that dry overnight. Took a utility knife blade to se the paint off the top of the lower letters, since it was a pain to sand off even with a quarter-sheet sander. Taped off the raised sides and ends of the plate, and used the sander to sand down the exposed metal.. 60 dry, 150 dry, 400 dry, 1000 dry.. then hand-sanding: 1000 wet, 2000 wet, and 0000 steel wool. Even took some polishing compound to it. (which also cleaned up some scuffs in the black) Then shot the whole thing with 3 solid coats of clearcoat. There's a slight orange peel evident on the letters, but it's only noticeable from about 1' away.

The pics don't do it justice, but they'll give ya a decent idea. The "5.0 LITER EFI" is now pretty close to mirror shine. (at least as clean as your average exterior badge) I like it enough that I'm considering finding more and putting one in place of the HO plate on the Lincoln. (of course, I could polish that one up too.. and see how it comes out)

Only thing I can't decide is which manifold I like it better on.. so I took a pic of it on top of each one.

I like it on the red one. Do the same with the blue oval. I know the whole red dosent go with the rest of your engine... So go with the blue. Yeah you should do the same with the oval.

You kinda lost me there on the "Do the same with the blue oval" bit.

Well I just started thinking about how I might paint the HO plate, since I have it laying around and I still have the itch to mess around with this stuff. I took a pic of it and did a crude drawing in Paint, of what I have in mind. I am thinking about mixing a little red, black, and blue.. and giving the raised surfaces the same polish as the letters on the SO plate. I just did lines instead of filling everything in.. and the "5.0" would be black just like the "HO" would be. The Ford text would be blue like the oval, although obviously lighter than the color I used.

I was saying polish the ford emblem but sure. I dont like the HO plate as much. I would do the letters and the lines red and everything else black and just color in the ford emblem blue maybe.

I think it looks better on the blue one (but heck I like Ford blue). I did something similar to my SO's top plate when I had it on my engine. I sanded the raised edge around the plate so it was silver taped it off and then sprayed the inner part black. I then used ford blue to paint the oval and let it dry. Then I did something that turned out good but was a pain in the a$$ to do. I hand painted the FORD script and outer oval white. Looked good but it was hard to keep the white paint from getting on the blue. I also sanded the "LITER" and "EFI" to make it shine but I painted 5.0 in Ford red. Really looked good but I ended up giving it to a friend for his Stang. Problem was he sold his stang so I can't get the plate back.

I did polish the Ford emblem. The blue paint you see is inside the depressed areas of the emblem, and I polished the raised parts.

I'm already working on the HO plate. Even just sanded down with 320 dry, it looks a hell of a lot better. Taping it off to paint the black parts now.

Oh almost forgot for the HO see if ya can find a 86 HO top plate in a junk yard. They looked the same as the SO plate but had a HO in the space between the Ford oval and 5.0.

My mistake I should have said it better. I ment that I polished the raised border that goes around the indented section where 5.0 liter efi sits.

Because my '88 XR7 was medium scarlet red, I painted the intake setup the same. I loved the way it looked.
I also had a custom plate on top of the manifold with black lettering.

I should take a moment here to point out that the title of this thread is NOT, I repeat NOT an excuse for Shawn to expose himself. OK, back to the car stuff. :p

Painted my cobra intakes duplicolor metalcast red, looks just like candy apple.
Title: Re: Show off the little stuff!
Post by: Bird351 on June 19, 2005, 06:31:51 PM
I like that red. That's giving me the itch to use those metalcast paints at some point. Don't know on what, though.. but I'm sure I'll find something.

BTW, this thread isn't just limited to minor engine details. If there's anything you feel like showing off.. maybe an interior part you thought came out well, but didn't do enough interior work to merit a thread of its own, (for example) let's have it. I meant this as a repository for all types of little cosmetic jobs.

Yea that red really kicks ass, figuring that the purple, blue and green should come out candy just like mine did, would love to see somebody else try it.
Start out with the metalcast primer first though, then paint and clear.
Must have but at least 5 coats of prime,10 coats of paint and 4 coats of clear, but as you can see the finised product is well worth the time.

Removed factory ashtray from console and installed a footwell lamp. I wired it in with the reading lamp switch on the back of the console.

Now that's what I'm talking about. Good use of the space, and something I would definitely consider doing on one of these. Maybe the '88 with its lighting package or whatever.

Just thought I'd take a quick pic to show my progress on this. I'm down to the 2000 grit wet part. This will be cleaned up a bit when I hit it with the polishing compound and clearcoat tomorrow, and then it will be done.. but this is a decent idea of how it will turn out:

Bullitt pedals (the first to have them in a Fox Cougar):

Smoothed out the rocker panels inside the door jambs and added a 1999 Cougar sill plate to each side:

I have too much other stuff to list for the convertible.

Old black '86: took the rear ash tray that Zach deleted and used it to create a lighted Cougar emblem for the dash (it's on the far right in the picture):

Old blue '84: painted the taillights so that they had the Mercury "laser stripe" motif:

header panel broken eh?
i know a guy in beckly west virginia who can get new aftermarket header panels for these cars,, i paid 125 for mine a couple years ago.  I was very happy that all holes and other things match up perfect. the only difference was the thicker fiberglass form.

No doubt about that. I'm messing around with some Mustang seat belt receptacle covers that may or may not work. I'll know later this week. If they do, places like Late Model Mustang Restorers (http://www.50resto.com) have most of our colors in stock for cheap. Generally the Mustang covers are shorter than the ones on our cars...how much, and how it affects us, is what I'm going after. I'm pulling the driver's seat from the convertible to test all of this.

Post by: Thunder Chicken on June 21, 2005, 02:06:48 PM
I seem to vaguely remember, back when I took a Mustang seat apart to use the recliner mechanism in my car, that the Mustang seat belt attached to the floor while the T-Bird/Cougar attaches to the seat slider bracket. This was a base (non-lumbar) seat. I'm not 100% sure what the difference was between the two, but I do remember that there was a difference - if you want to use Mustang seats you need T-Bird sliders or you'll have no seat belt.

Yeah Carm, they are like that. I'm talking about just the covers for the seat belts. The ones that we always seem to break. ;)

My seatbelt thingys are fine...

FYI.. it seems that black and grey hold up the best(all three of my TCs have black interior and have good thingys, as does a spare set of black TC seats), while red and blue go to Hell in a hurry.
Title: Re: Show off the little stuff!
Post by: Thunder Chicken on June 21, 2005, 09:00:50 PM
I have always felt that red everything goes to hell fast. It seems like the red dye not only breaks down quicker, but it causes whatever the dye is in or on to break down fast as well. I think it must have zero UV-blocking capabilities.

My T-Bird is the first Fox car I've ever had with a cracked dash. The dash is red. First one with worn, torn seats. The seats are red. First one with broken seat belt thingy (although the Cougar was chewed up pretty bad by a dog). First one with faded interior (and I have yet to see a non-faded red interior in one of these cars). First one with broken seat belt buckle support. It just seems like the red interiors in these cars go all to hell. Even the speaker grilles in the rear deck have faded and gone all pink.

If I could find a donor car with any other color interior I'd swap it out in a heartbeat (well, in a few years, anyway, given my history for doing projects not-so-quickly)

It has just occured to me that I haven't even replied to this thread with anything resembling the original topic. I'm at the cottage on dialup right now (BTW, Tom, your bitmap sig takes forever to load on dialup) so I can't post pics, but I've pretty much dospoogeented everything I've done to the car in this forum anyway. Just about all of it is "little stuff":
Coming someday are the LED tail lights (got one almost finished), leather interior (with TC/Sport seats), and I'd like to find a set of 60's T-Bird emblems that have the classic V8 logo with a 'Bird head (seen 'em on Ebay a few times, but always with "will not ship to Canada)

And that pretty much sums up the little stuff. The big stuff is an entirely different wish list

Things might pick up now that I actually have money to work on these  things. :p

Little stuff ya say?

Well, here's a shot of my valve cover...it's one of the early turbo ones (best of the bunch IMO). Painted the sides with wrinkle black, then masked the top and painted the main part the same color as my car, and did the Ford emblem in metallic blue. Then I sanded down the raised parts. Turned out pretty nice but now that it's on the car, I dunno how I'm gonna be able to keep it clean. I also painted my upper & lower intakes with wrinkle black and painted the throttle body black and accessory brackets black for a little different look.

Also got a shot of the gauge panel I have in my EQ hole.

I should also get a picture of how I put the controls for my reverse indiglo gauges in the "blank" spot where the controls for the autodimming lights would be. Blends right in. I also stripped the peeling black paint off my aluminum door lock surrounds (so it's bare aluminum) and that thing in the center console but it didn't turn out as good as I thought it might look. OH, I also put some aluminum sill plates from an '84 Thunderbird in my car, they look way cooler than the factory plastic ones.

Well, I promised some new trivial pictures after work today, so here goes. As always, my camera sucks.. this is the best I can do with it.

Got some fog lights put on the car awhile back, since neither of my Marks have the stock lights on them anymore. Hooray for $20 AutoHole gift certificates and rewards programs. The first two pics also show the grille I painted last night. Two hours of taping, four hours (off and on) of messing with paint, and I'm still not happy with it. Anyway, instead of going black with it, I went with the dark blue that is going to become the main trim color on the rest of the car. (which you'll see a little more of later)

Third pic is that same blue color again, although not a very good job of it. (it tends to show light unless I really pack it on there.. and I just did this to clean 'em up a little) Painted the air vent grilles underneath the wipers.
Title: Re: Show off the little stuff!
Post by: Bird351 on September 28, 2005, 05:16:09 PM
In the next pic, you can see I started on the mirrors. I painted the plastic trim rings, and eventually I am going to paint the middle plastic ring (where the mirror mounts to the body) on the mirrors from the '88 and swap them over.. or just tape these off and paint them on the car. Anyway, the mirrors were where I first got the idea to do dark blue trim vs. black.. and now it's taking off to include much of the car.

Last two pics are my new gauges. py SunPro gauges, but they serve their purpose. Unfortunately, the Mark's dash is so cramped for space, (without tearing something up) I had to mount the gauges facing upward toward the windshield. Not the most convenient thing, but it involved the least amount of dash mutilation. Someday I will go back and rework everything, if and when I find a better solution. I was thinking of some kind of raised metal frame that mounted over the top part of the dash without touching it. Since the top of the Mark dash appears to be a separate piece, I'm thinking I can just mount that frame at the seam you can't see when you're sitting in the seat. Hard to explain. I'll mock it up someday. Anyway..

Left two gauges are water temp. and volts.. the green switch on the cluster is the master power switch. If I shut that switch off, you can't light the extra gauges, and the voltmeter dies. There's a 5A fuse just below that cluster. You can also see a red toggle for the fog lights, to the right of the voltmeter.

Right two gauges are vac/boost and oil pressure. The blue switch (all these are lit, btw) controls the gauge lights. This is something I intend to eliminate eventually, when I put the gauge lights on the dimmer. (go fig.. these gauges are too bright, my others are too dim) For now, though, this was the solution that gave me the smallest headache to install.

Having posted that, let me remind everyone that this is not meant as a fishing-for-praise type thread, or anything like that. (at least, I don't mean it that way.. don't care if that's your motivation or not) It's meant to try to inspire other people, if they need inspiring. It's meant to give other people ideas, if they need or want ideas. Hell, if nothing else, you might be wondering if someone else did a mod you're considering and haven't seen mentioned before.. and might see it here.. and it might help you decide whether or not to continue.

My newly installed, but used, cold air setup. I've insulated it with some header wrap,(cool factor). No I don't know it it helps, car actully seems to run same as it did with the stock air box and a K&N filter.

It very well might help...I originally had my upper intercooler pipe as just bare steel, until I found out just how freaking hot it gets where it goes over the exhaust manifold (hot enough that you can't touch it, I know that much). I wrapped some thermo-tec heat shielding around it, and now you can put your hand on the outside of it even when the car is running. Much better. Of course, it probably also helps that before the pipes were black, and this insulation has reflective foil on the outside of it.

I think I have a few.  Right now I'm thinking about what I did to the shifter, this may not be that uncommon:  I've seen where people replaced the shifter bushings with solid bushings, but I didn't want to buy any parts so I simply took the upper shifter handle off and pulled the metal shoulders (sleeves) out of the bushing holes.  You have options, I just threw one in the black holes somewhere and I cut the other sleeve in half.  Now use the halves to go back in the bushing holes and put it all together and tighten the bolts down as much as you dare.  This will take all the sloppiness out of the shifter but still dampen vibration.  Or you could just shorten the shoulders the desired amount to tighten things up.

I may experiment with doing away with the rubber part and using nuts to bolt the shifter directly to the base bar, but it works great as is, much tighter feel.  The only thing to do is replace the soft factory  with a hard material  for even better feel.

I have more, just can't think right now.

For the seatbelts, I thought about making some metal sleeves somehow or another to replace the factory plastic "thingy".  Some stainless sheet metal would make a sweet sleeve, just need to mount it so it has some flex to it and doesn't bend.

a lot of zip tying, wire looming, cleaning up, line re-routing, all kinds of stuff like that, probably find you a K&N cone, ditch the airbox, and move the IRCM

without spending any money on anything other than the 3G alt, and a K&N cone, and spending time re-routing and tying and looming, it looks like:

I polished the IAC, put on some chrome valve covers, and painted the upper intake early ford blue and the lower silver. Gives the engine bay a little color instead of just silver and black. Oh also added Ford Racing 9mm blue wires. And yes if anyone wants to know they fit the factory wire looms:D .

You mean those looms were on the car when you got it and are not cracked?  Even with the low miles time itself usually wreaks havoc on the small plastic bits under the hoods of cars.  I'll be re-doing all my vacuum lines with siliconized airline tubing once my motor is finally done (been draggin my @$$).  Most of them were replaced this way already, but I found some even better stuff and I am gonna just do them all now.  I got a set of the blue good year hoses too.  Pictures by this Wednesday, I promise!

BTW Thuderjet, that looks real nice!

The cover doesn't have a gasket. There is one between the upper (plenum) and lower manifold. Always a good idea to replace any gasket once it's been used and disturbed. Cuts down on "mysterious" leaks later.

Yeah Paul those were there when I bought the car. They are all in good shape no cracks or anything. It even had the distributer boot! The only thing I had to by was the coil cover. Oh the engine bay didn't look like that when I got it. The body was great and so was the interior (well except for the cracks in the passenger seat) but the engine bay was really dirty. To get it to the point it is now took about 2 weekends of work and taking alot of things apart to paint them. All the front accesssories have been taken off and painted with silver high temp paint. I also took the upper and lower off to paint them. The only thing that I haven't painted is the block. You can't really see it cause the engine sits so low in the car that no one can tell that Ford never painted it and it's, well, rusty brown. Besides it would be a pain in the ass to pull everyting out of the engine bay and mask it to paint the block. I'll just wait till I rebuild the engine to paint it Ford blue :D .

Light Candy

Sorry I'm not a good night photographer. No picture.
I just mounted som electroluminescent wire behind the midconsole bezel, around the radio and a/c controls.
Easily done and WOW what a nice effect! It looks Like a real expensive airplane pen 15pit.
I was unhappy about not finding my buttons at night, thought about Leds but I'd need a bunch of them.
Then I remembered the PC case mod stuff I'd seen. You can see their stuff at
 http://shopping.netledger.com/s.nl/c.ACCT76399/sc.1/.f
Best buy is the PC mod kit, just cut off the PC connector and stick the light pipe wire on behind the bezel.
I used double sided tape. Space the bezel out an 1/8 inch to give the best lighting.
I used the ultra marine color but I think that the lime green would match better with the rest of the dash lights.

Aha! if only I'd learned puppiesanese, the little  with a moon and stars means night pictures!!

This aint exactly cosmetic or cool lookin but it sure the hell is functional. I had a tail light lens separate from the rest of the assembly on the freeway for the second time. Happened on a TC I owned a while back too. Well, it's gettin harder to come by these lights. This one took a month to find. So I decided that this was never going to happen again. I drilled 3 small holes and used some extra interior sheet metal screws I had and secured the 2 pieces together. I'll never lose another lens!!!

Post by: Beau on March 02, 2006, 02:20:32 AM
Tonight, while I was finishing the interior swap, I decided to install that Taurus dome light I had laying around for awhile.
Wasn't too much trouble at all, but there is a bit of grinding to do to the plastic backing.
I'll have pics up in a coupla days or so. I had to take 'em with a film camera, as my digital wasn't working right.
All in all, it took about 30 minutes...
EDIT: The dome light came out of a '94 Taurus, was gonna take the heater panel, but it had the elect. temp control, instead of the cable.

Well, since I finally got around to doing up my buttstuffog gauge coversion, I've put in my red gauges..
Basically, what I've done is took apart the XR7 cluster I had, and took out the green filters over the bulbs, and sanded the backs of the gauge faces, and then installed red bulbs, but they're really bright, wish i could make or find some red filters that may half-assed work...
Anybody know if the newer pontiacs have filters, or red bulbs in their gauges?

I could also add some red cellophane and use clear bulbs, too.

Look for red lighting gels.  It's a sheet of plastic that is used for stage lighting, photography, etc, etc.  We use some at work, and even with 575 watts shining through some of the darker stuff, it still dims the lights a ton.  You should be able to get the right effect with that since there are a ton of colors.

Well, after some trial and error, what I came with, was that on my Sport cluster, i DIDN'T sand the back of the gauge faces, but did poke in some red bulbs, and it's kind of a subdued red, not really orange, but not quiiiiite red, either, it works, and i like it...till i can get some other faces in, it'll do.

I had one of those (from a police Crown Vic - I think Ford used the same one in most cars through the 90's) but decided against installing it because the original one was wider, so the installation wouldn't perfectly cover the hole (you can see the lines of the original in your pic). I ended up selling it on eBay for big bucks - people saw the word "Police interceptor" in the title and went nuts :D

Ok Lets Try This Again,

Awhile back I posted some pic's in the "post your wheels " section and mentioned that I had plans for my Birds.

Well heres some shot's of whats going on lately. I rebuilt my 87 Turbo motor with alot of goodies in it. A wooden roller cam, oversized valves, dual springs, ported and polished the dog, Bob's log, polished the upper and lower intake,46LB injectors, press regulator,65MM throttle body,A lil 50 shot of nitrous, msd ignition, distributor, rev control and braided lines from hell. I added a T-3 to it which you see now but found a nice Chrome plated one on ebay last week and am awaiting on it to arrive now to swap them out. Once thats in I can install my huge aluminum intercooler setup, finish running my lines and see if this puppy will fire up.

Moved all the wires under the fenderwells, including all the electronics, solonoid and the battery which is mounted under the left hand fender. Polished the ac drier and plan on running all those lines in braid as well.

A buddy of mine mixed the paint I used on the engine bay and my engine which he claims is from the code in my doorjam. I have to say I cant remember any Fords being this color back then but who knows, maybe he threw in some goodies into the paint when mixed. The color goes off in the sunlight, pearlish appearing sorta.

Sorry for posting this in the wrong place earlier and sure I'll ditch the Fram just for you, I'll post some completed pic's in a week or so after it's done.

I Hope it's satisfactory for you guys and pardon the dust :-)

My falisafe is if the car is painted normal color like Red, blue , black, green, those colors  go good with just bought any color in the interior and motor it makes the interior and motor stand out more but if your with like a a Exotic colr like Purple, Yellow, Orange, those colors the interior needs to be plain like black, same as the car.

Pianting your wheels or having chrome wheels will make your wheels stand out from the car sometimes.
 Heres what I mean.

 Normal  Colors

 Car Color-Interior Color-Motor Color-Wheel color.

 Reds
Light Red-Tan,Black, Red- Red,Dark Blue, Black, Gold,Yellow,Silver-Polished Aluminum or White.
Medium Red-Medium Red, Black or Dark Gray- Black, Red, Blue, Gold,Yellow,-Flat Black or Chrome.
Red Matlic or Dark Red-Red or Black-Blue, Black, Gold,Yellow -Flat Black or Chrome.

More colors and options to come just don't have time to type them right now but more will come.

Just remiber these are my  personal preferances and these are not colors that I would do if I was going to paint and do a custom car. So if you don't like these color sceems tell me what u would do.

I like the custom hood. That is a Torino scoop. It's different without being "over the top".Nice.I do think a Turbo Coupe header panel would look better with that hood.Still,it's really nice.

+1 It's not too much so it looks good.

It resembles a 70-72 Torino hood

I installed a Toyota Series 80 in-dash cupholder :rice:

(http://img182.imageshack.us/img182/961/img0733croppedge2.th.jpg) (http://img182.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img0733croppedge2.jpg) (http://img157.imageshack.us/img157/6145/img0734croppeddd0.th.jpg) (http://img157.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img0734croppeddd0.jpg) (http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/2657/img0735croppedvo6.th.jpg) (http://img266.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img0735croppedvo6.jpg)

That hood does look sort of like the one we had on our '72 Torino Sport fastback, though it looks a little flatter on top (or it could be my memory fading).

Pretty sure it is. The title of is last post says "1972 torino". Im not sure about it yet. Its what you like that matters.

Quietleaf,

Cupholder? They put those in cars? How do they expect you to freeze and burn you:punchballs:? I thought that was part of the driving experience.

I keep trying to come up with something similar. I want to do a dual one though. All in time.

What is that little screen where the ride control goes?

Never noticed the "little things" thread...

I have done a million little things to my cougars. The most recent being my hood ornament. I had the standard 83 cougar hood ornament until this winter. I slipped while shoveling snow and broke it off! I was livid! You never see 83's with the ornament intact. I have a spare NOS ornament, but I don't wanna put it on yet. I also had a 73 cougar's ornament in my box-o-misc-cougar . I wondered if it would fit. I was surprised to see that the base fit right on the 83's (the angles all lined up). I just had to find the spring that shot out in the snow and hook it back on. The 73's loop where the spring passes through is about 3x thicker than the 83's (that's what broke, the tiny loop) so it should even be more durable.

Anyway, here's what it looks like. It's heavy and glass. It's fun to look through while I am driving :hick:

Just got my trans back.I sent it out to have it rebuilt, new servo (type H),shift kit and extra clutch pack put in.

I also sent my torque converter out for rebuild (2200-2500 stall) and bought a new flex plate. I hope to get it in this week and try it out.

Here's one after a coupla light coats of flat black. In the pic, looks like I did a piss-poor job, but it's really covered good. Amlost too good in a spot or 2, lol.

Think of it as adding some contrast lol

The fake Carbon Fiber trim is that stuff you can get on ebay for dirt cheep. Just clean and dry the surface very well and apply. Mine has stayed on for years and never pealed. The real carbon fiber badges were custom made by a company that i dont think are in business anymore.  :(
