Hey, you did say ugly. It's a work in progress. That's what the rockers looked like when I first got it, 140K miles and sat 8 years before I rescued it.
The covers were a gift.

There's an angine in there somewhere:X

Glad you mentioned "Foxbirdcats only"... You guys wouldn't have any interest in my 1.9 turbodiesel, 3.5 Chrysler V6 or 4.3 Vortec. Hell, I own them and I have no interest in them...

You'd probably have to ask him, but I am thinking it's a V2. I am not 100% on that though. I do know it's the model with the self contained oiling, so you don't have to tap into your oil pan. This is a quick vid from the day we fired it up. Sorry for black & white, but the sound is the best part anyway. lol.

It's a V3 as those are the self contained units, which is why I was looking at them.

You know sometimes I just open the hood on my T-bird and stare at the engine......is that bad? ;)

If it's self contained and it's a vortech i believe its the V3. The car sounds narsty

This is my favorite pic of my engine bay. I didn't take it it was taken by someone at a cruise night. I think it almost looks like a dealer brochure photo.

Sometimes pics can't really illustrate what all has been done.  As in your relocated upper intake, custom piping and the monster intercooler hidden in the bumper.

Not 100% buttoned up yet, but I'm very happy with how it looks (and more importantly, how it runs!).  About as clean as I plan to keep it while it maintains DD duties.  I've had a few comments from people saying it's the cleanest foxbody engine bay they've seen haha.

Will, following college (year and a half to go!!) be replaced with either a 5.0 or 4.6. Haven't decided yet. I do like the Hot Rod crate engine idea...

252K, stock bottom end, reman heads, absolutely stock. Newer master cylinder...

Post by: Romeo2k on December 03, 2010, 01:05:33 PM
Not much to see with my "Installed" engine, Considering it's been sitting with the whole upper apart waiting for attention + It's a V6. ;)

I'll throw up a pic of the (Future Planned) '92 Bronco 351w from a year ago after I stored it on the stand in a bit, But again~Not much to see there either.

*Edit~Piccy:

Lost of plans for this 90k mile well running beast, Mostly just the block and internals will be re-used (Pending Funds).
Was a welcomed trade for a POS dodge caravan that was stuck in our narrow downhill driveway + A necessary upgrade to the T-Birds V6. ;P

because I haven't found a correct smog eliminator pulley yet. If I just pull it off and run a shorter belt the water pump spins backwards and theres no way around it.

The ac on 88 v6's is on a separate belt so it was easy to ditch. besides, it hasn't worked since I got the car anyway. bad evaporator and acspoogeulator. oh and hey I made $2.67 on the condenser core:hick:

....3G alternator in a week or two first, then finish the exhaust with MAC LT's.  After that, probably get (or more likely fabricate) smog eliminator, get hard piped intake tube, throw on some roller rockers, get the heads and intake ported, maybe repaint (powder coat) all brackets and intakes accessories and such, then back pretty much completely off the engine for prolly a year or two and work on the rest of the car until the twin turbo setup goes on. Which is going to be a whoooole different ball game. (SC block) and god knows what else. Its a money drainer though so its gonna be a good long while before it happens.

That's because it isn't the thread,it's the title of the thread. That's why the first two words of the thread are "Read This". Thanks.

Thank you for the compliments.

The list of mods is about 5 miles long and it took 9 years to get it to this point. Its a Supercharged 347 Stroker with a Stage I FB Transmission(900 hp) to keep it short and sweet.

The alt relocation is no big deal. Just dont install the bottom bolt the way Vortech tells you to or you will be pissed off if it ever fails.

What headers did you run on the 351C or did you use manifolds if so what did they come off of? I can get a really nice 351C for cheap, but the swap header that I've seen are $600+.

I've never been asked to be a mod, and ours seem to do a great job. Unlike most forums, we are usually pretty good at tending to ourselves without the need of mods that often, and when they're needed, they are usually there. If they need me,I'm easy to find. Thanks for the compliment about sounding like Chuck.....it's nothing special, just common sense and the ability to look at a situation at a third person's point of view. Sometimes what is right isn't just my way,it is the right way. Sometimes my way isn't how it should be,and generally, I can recognize that. As far as knowing the forum pretty good, I like to think so. I really like this forum leaps and bounds beyond any other I have seen and/or attended....more like a family, just the right size, and more supportive than any other..And last but not least, More often than not I think before I talk.LOL.

Th alternator bracket should be the same. It'll sit higher and wider due to the 351's higher and wider block.

why do all SEFI v8 intakes have what looks like freeze plugs in the sides?
Title: Show your engine now !!!!!
Post by: vinnietbird on December 12, 2010, 06:55:31 PM
The intake is cast in a mold, and the "sand" used in molding has to come out somewhere, and those holes aid in the molding. They have to be sealed,so,freeze plugs.

Kept explorer cam in it..  Works fine, car isnt raced any plus wasnt looking for all power. And figured it would work good with the 3.73's rear end I putting in car, since the explorers ran that combo.

Well, seeing as how I just "finished" the carb swap last weekend, I'll throw some up. While underhood is no where near where it ought to be for how clean the rest of the car is, it will have to do for now. Hate the new air cleaner, but for 8 bucks, it works for now. The stock CFI unit will fit, just need get a 90 degree banjo fuel inlet for the carb. Next up is shorty headers, and sand blast/paint all brackets, ect.

Before.  All original right down to the date on the 1984 drive belts.

During the swap. Only had the weekend to do this, had to drive back to work Monday.

Now running,. The stock in tank 84 CFI fuel pump to feed the high pressure rail pump runs a steady 5psi, perfect for a carb. Still got tons more to clean, ect. but for  daily driver duty, works for now.

Ahh what the hell...here's another one of mine I took right after the HO swap.  (That's a piece of backing paper on the intake from the 302 decals i put on my valve covers).  Next time I get it outta the garage I'll grab a better pic.  Since this one was taken I have deleted the EGR and put the stock airbox back on.

I've considered it to but I'm not going to do it. I only take the car to the track once or twice a year to a test and tune day. There's no point in putting in nitrous when I drive the car on the street 99.99999% of the time. What am I going to do use nitrous on the street like one of those Fast & Stupid guys:mullet:.

It would be very cool to be able to shock people by saying you have NOS on a T-bird, lol.  For the money you cant beat nitrous and the power gains it gives.  Bang for the buck for sure, but it my case I'm afraid there would quite literally be a "bang" involved.

beware there are a lot of hidden cost to do a NOS setup right.  By the time your done buying the kit, bottle warmer, gauges, remote bottle opener, and not to meantion filling the bottle after every 5-7 runs it gets expensive.  Money would be better spent toward a head/cam/intake combo than NOS in my opinion.  I've been there and blew about $1000 on that  and after about a year I sold it all

If I punch the 88 from a stop it will go sideways. It gets pretty squirrely sliding around till it grabs. I still think it needs more power in the form of TW heads or a Kenne Bell blower:burnout:.

From a dead stop, first and second gear are just tire spin and the rear of the car sliding back and forth. I need stickier tires. I would love to get a supercharger one day.....we'll see what happens this year.

I'll post a new pic of the engine as soon as I can swap the valve covers over to a new set.

alright its getting crowded in here. How about a little variety with a current pic:

This is what's know as a 3.8L v6. Yes, a V6. Not 4, or even 8 cylinders, but right in the middle with 6. Some of you guys might have only heard about this mythical engine, but believe me, it does exist. I have proof.:p

Mine was a work horse for 21 years.....Had to let it go. It was either rebuild it, or replace it....I went with the replace option, since I had an entire parts car, with everything I needed for the swap..
I will really miss this little V6....I used to spin that tire with it all the time.

The body has about 140k on it. The engine came out of my 86 Mustang GT that I totalled back in 2000; the bottom end has about 100k on it and I've had the blower set up on it for about 4 years. 2 years ago I upgraded to the RPM II intake and added the power pipe, 75 MM T/B and Lightning MAF...that was good for an additional 46 horse!

Dont worry, all the spills and stains are from when we sat the old engine in the same place last weekend. Traded for this engine from another poster here, added the exploder intake. You cant see them, but I blasted all the brackets and painted them black.

Going here soon:

I'd post a pic of mine, but it's still at the mechanic after 14 months. He's been fighting fuel/air mixture problems for all that time. We've swapped out the cam, injectors, filters, fuel pump, computer (for a mass-air one), wiring harness, and intake. He even put headers on, stiffer valve springs, and a wider exhaust pipe. Now it's getting GT40 heads and new pistons. If that doesn't get it running right... :wtf:

heh heh heh, and next year its getting them:evilgrin:

But for right now, I'm just trying to decide whether I want to finish my exhaust work, (currently open shorties, looking at about $450 for total system completion...:punchballs:) or whether I should finish working on the cheap TC turbo 5psi setup I've designed to go in that space there on the PS (also looking at around $450 for total system completion). Ya know, just so I can worry about blowing up my current engine until I get the new one properly built.

The Master is from f150 pickup.

It is supposed to protect the hose from rubbing  through on the alternator and on the 2G there is a spinning fan on the alternator too

Kind of a better safe than sorry measure

hmmm... that's what I kinda figured, it just doesn't seem like its close enough to be affected by the alternator at all. Maybe its just the way the pictures look:dunno:

They flow the same, but there is room to really port the intake on explorers...  the GT40 is about 7 lbs lighter (or more) then the explorer/cobra's
Title: Show your engine now !!!!!
Post by: vinnietbird on February 02, 2011, 09:33:20 AM
Yep,the GT-40 weighs a lot less.....a lot. As far as flow, the Cobra,Explorer, and GT-40 all flow nearly identical. Not enough difference to ever notice except by a tiny bit on paper. On paper, the Explorer actually flowed the best (by a negligible amount). I have had them all, and actually like the Explorer better, although I sent mine to a new home because I thought I wanted a GT-40 (which is on the Sport now). I have an Explorer intake and a Cobra in the garage waiting for whatever. I'll sell the Cobra, polish the Explorer and probably install it one day  down the road. No hurry right now, I have other projects lined up. I start GT40 intake plate "production" as soon as decent weather shows it's face.

... efi went out the door. its a 86 non roller 302 with the factory bottom end (for now) with a factory 85 mustang intake. It has ported e5's. The cam is a machine shop special its a mid range rv style cam with 448/472 lift good for low end torque and combined power above 3200 good for light to light stuff and good highway cruising best part was the price.... 50 for the cam 50 for the lifter set.  Holley 600-750 hybrid with a 2" phelonic spacer  8 mil wires and going to HEI style distributor with an Accel Super Coil. Its gonna be good for 3-350 hp and around 375 tq.

Shes most definatly a franken-motor budget build. I had 99% of the stuff layin around in the garage. Im itchin' to get my tax return so I can do all the upgrades and throw her in the car. Im dyin' to drive the old girl again

Seeing how my 302 in the car decided to take a turn for the worst about 3 yrs ago... Ive been contemplating on building the 351 I have on the shelf. Its going to be all out and I dont quite have the cash to do the 408 and all the suspention stuff right now. So, Ill do the suspention stuff this summer and get her buttoned up on the underside. Then its 408 time. but until then this will keep me pretty well busy

With E5, stock intake, and RV cam I doubt it. Maybe 250ish. He'd have a better chance with ported GT40s, Edelbrock rpm intake, and a bigger cam(around .500 lift 280 duration).

Does anyone have any experience-based recommendations regarding relocating A/C lines?

Not a Ford (Cadillac 500) but it will go in my 87 Turbo Coupe and it is painted dark blue Ford (as close as you can get to Cadillac Blue).  This year I upgraded the bottom end to use main studs and put in a roller cam.  The new cam is 248 duration at .050 with a .670 lift, ground on a 110 LSA.  About the same duration as last years cam but with .070 more lift, and roller instead of flat tappet.  I hope to see mid 11's without the NOS this year.  Just got it to this point today and I should have it running next week-end with a little work and luck.  Sure will be weird not to have to break in a cam.

wow is that the cadillac black widow manifold

back in the late 80's early 90's when i raced my caddy i had the book called "cadillac motorsports" it was a small black paper back catalog and had lots of go fast parts for the 368-500 cid cadillac motor.. like stroker cranks, pistons, cams, headers, rockers, and this manifold that i wanted real bad called the black widow but it cost $800.00 in 1989.. and was based on the holley strip dominator manifold

Back in those days you could not get an intake that would fit a Cadillac directly, so they would adapt Ford 460 intake to fit.  The spacing was about the same but not quite and it was less than perfect.  In fact I'm using 460 Van headers on my T-bird; had to cut off the  by overall spacing was pretty good.

This intake was originally designed by Bulldog but they were too big and did not work well.  Then MTS purchased the right to build them and did a redesign that worked a lot better.  My intake is one of the newer models and it still costs $495.  You can also buy the Edelbrock performer for about $300, but these are your only two choices.  I have both but I really like the look of the MTS intake.

No water runs through the intake and this make it really nice when you have to pull it.

Cadillac Motorsports is still around but they were sold and went from Florida to Arizona; they now go by CadCo mostly.  They are the biggest Cadillac parts dealer but I'm not impressed with their quality or service and do not deal with them.  I prefer to go to Maximum Torque Specialties or MTS; very nice people and great service.

Thanks for the good words guys.  When I painted the new upper intake black and installed it, my brother didn't come out and say it, but I could tell he thought the aluminum-colored one I used to have on the engine looked better.  I was surprised he felt that way, because I think black intakes look good.

I think we all want to see your updated pics Vinnie.  :)

No other cars allowed. No transmissions, suspension, etc. All engines. No other subject matter allowed. We have plenty of other threads for that. Engines only. Not much effort put into mine currently, just enough to make it last, and look good for a Daily Driver engine bay. This motor is coming outta there though, and a motor with some real low rpm torque is going in it's place, as most of my fun happens at 0-60 acceleration. 2.3T no worky so good for that.

Look at that blank canvas right there.  Since it costs pretty much the same to go HO as it does to go GT40, I'd go with the later.  Unless you've really got dough to throw at it,  then I'd go tall deck windsor, maybe 408, and Trick-Flow or something equally wicked.  Just me...

the SO has cast flat top pistons with a mild roller cam using the 302 firing order.  The HO has forged pistons for the first few years then changed to hyperteuctic pistons.  All had valve reliefs except for the 1986 HO which had flat tops.  The HO cam uses the 351W firing order.

Oddly enough it actually works. I ran it at the track within 15 minutes of running with the stock rubber tube and the car went .3 mph and .03 faster. It's probably woth ~3hp. Or I just drove better 15 minutes later.

There is a little piece of foam tape on the strut tower bar as the tube hits it when the engine is revved and it makes a clanging noise. The little piece of foam tape stops the noise.

I'm an AFR guy, so I picked 6 of one versus a half dozen of the other. I was really leaning towards Kaase's P38, but I have yet to see any dyno comparisons on a big bore Windsor and I wanted to stay with the FRPP ribbed valve covers anyway.

In the end it's what you prefer yourself :) I also like AFR but might go with the 11R's when I build my engine. Kaase P38 hasn't convinced me enough to be honest.

It has the following: stock block, stock crank, Crower Sportsman rods, Diamond pistons, Esslinger aluminum Dport head ported by Boport, Boport stage 3 solid roller cam, ported/gutted lower/upper intakes, Boport header, Precision 6262 ball bearing turbo, 95lb injectors, MS2 engine mgmt, MSD 6AL2 programmable ignition box.
I've been using the stock fuel lines with a trunk mount methanol injection system for a couple of years now. I am currently in the process of sumping the factory tank, installing a Fuelab 140gph pump, -8 feed and return lines, 160lb injectors and switching over to E-85. Gunning for a 9 second pass this year.

The turbo on the engine stand was a journal bearing version of the 6262 with the .63 A/R turbine housing. Summer 2012, the shaft broke in the throttle body which sent a screw thru the engine destroying the turbine wheel in that turbo. It was going to cost about 3/4 of the cost of a new turbo to fix it so I junked it and bought a ball bearing version with a .82 A/R turbine housing and a antisurge compressor housing. The holes help to keep the compressor from stalling when you chop throttle while under boost.

I was on the fence about it, but I was assured by my machine shop that if I followed their process and do so right after having the block blasted and tanked that it wouldn't be an issue.  That paint is actually cured as well.  I took it back to have it baked after painting so I wouldn't have to rely on engine heat to cure the paint.

Thanks, it's a 302.  I don't think I'd ever care to build a 347. 331, maybe.  The next one, though, is going to be a FRPP Boss block at 4.125 with a 4.000 stroke.  5 or 6 years, maybe more.  My first goal for this one is 345 horse at the crank, and then maybe next yer I'll do a head swap and some PCM/fuel system work to try to get 420 N/A at under 7000 rpm.  Someone told me I couldn't, so that became the plan.

345hp should be easy enough. I've got about 350hp in my Thunderbird. It's all in the heads. A good set of aluminum heads will get you to 345hp easy.

First set of heads will likely be Y303 GT40 heads, just because I've got a guy who will sell me a pair of assembled units, that are still NIB for $800. Aluminum, 1.94/1.54 165cc.

That is what i thought. I built a 347 some while back and accomplished 360 Wheel HP on a MUSTANG. So 300 would be around where a 302 would fall. But back to the paint. We never do it any more and when we did we used GLYPTOL ONLY. It is a paint that you use to insulate electric motors. RED in color and worked. But peel off is always a danger. Especially if the oil gets contaminated with fuel. Well to late now i guess. Good luck!!

Tom what engine was in your first photo?  Cross bolted mains look mighty LS to me.  I see too many of those bottom ends at work.  As for painting the valley Ive heard that it allows the oil a slick path back to the pan.  Ill pass only for fear of it flaking off.  Ill ask my neighbor he owns the local machine shop, see what his take on it is.

Moving along...

Decided to drop the distributor now rather than later.  Last time I kind of had a problem with the pump drive (which is how I came to this project in the first place), so I decided to get after it with the front cover off so I could be sure it went together smoothly.  Now I'm waiting on my head studs and gaskets while I stash away enough bank for some heads.  I hope to have it lit off for the first time by June 1.

The problem is that I had one fall in the pan (in vehicle) due to it for some reason not having the retaining ring on it. When I couldn't retrieve it, I pushed it to the rear sump and hoped for the best. If broke a chunk of no. 2 piston skirt and the small bits got up in the pump and jammed it solid causing the shaft to spin up like a twizzler and break. Leaving me with no oil pressure and a very slow mile home. Oh, and it happened to happen just as I finished a redline 1-2 up shift. Talk about wishing you'd taken the extra time.

The problem is that I had one fall in the pan (in vehicle) due to it for some reason not having the retaining ring on it. Ah got ya. So the old shaft fell out buggered up a piston? That'll do it.

I had the same issue with my 351C.....pulled the distributor to weld up the advance slot and shorten the curve. Next thing I know, I fire it up and there a growing pool of 20W50 Pennzoil on the driveway......... With the open headers I never heard the crankshaft counterweight slap the drive rod thru my Moroso oil pan. Looked a like a bullet pierced the pan. Did I shut the engine off immediately?... Hell no......like a nimrod I checked the gauge to see if it actually read "0" first.......... Oh well, it needed to come apart to be freshened and have a new custom solid cam inserted  244/254  .600/ .600 on 107's, 6 degrees advanced.

Exactly.

Actually, it was paint them or replace them.  They were originally polished stainless and when I got them second hand they looked like shiznit so I sand blasted them and ran them.  I didn't like how they looked when the project started, so I made a choice.

Well, here is the motor so far, with intake sitting on it. Have a few more details to iron out with the windage tray before bolting on the exterior:X

Still looking for a set of headers that will fit the AFR 205 heads with 4R70W auto. So far, I'm down to Kooks (which require an AFJ K-Member), CPR, and Anderson Motorsports...leaning towards CPR at the moment.

I have to run a 1/2" intake spacer with the Explorer upper otherwise the throttle linkage hits and binds on the FRPP Cobra valve covers I run. They do make 1/2" intake spacers for the Edelbrock intake as well.

Goes with the blue he had done on the stabilizer bars I guess ... through his business he had access to a powdercoater.  Engine came out of the car when they did the full repaint though, so everything is pretty tidy in there.  I certainly can't complain about the quality of work especially considering the purchase price.

I really like how you've done that with the car.  If I can make a small suggestion - lose the K&N sticker.  It looks out of place for what you're attempting to accomplish.

It's okay to tell me to F-off  I can take it.

I actually think more people would build Clevelands if the aftermarket for Windsor heads hadn't exploded in the early 90's. That or Clevors would be quite a bit more common.

I really like how you've done that with the car.  If I can make a small suggestion - lose the K&N sticker.  It looks out of place for what you're attempting to accomplish.

It's okay to tell me to F-off  I can take it.

And intake manifold, MAF (where one never was), valve covers, cylinder heads, headers, alternator, lack of smog pump and Thermactor system, lack of EGR valve..............

Yeah, but it doesn't scream aftermarket. It's very tastefully done.
Nice job!

I did it this way because it's easier to keep clean than all the chrome/polished stuff most people use ;)
