Torsion rods came out! October 11, 2007, 04:32:10 PM Anybody ever have that happen? I was sitting at a stop sign waiting to go and..... BANG!!!! "WTF was that?!?!?" I thought.I looked around for some punk that threw something at my car.... nope nobody.... so I drive a little bit, and pull over, looking underneath thinking a coil spring snapped.... nope all good..... Then I remember hearing something make a noise in the trunk when it happened.... go to pop the trunk, and imidiately I relize what broke.....looks like it just fell out for some reason. Now how in the hell do I get it back in there? I asume I will have to take the trunklid off and do it with the arms down, as there is no way in hell it will go in with the arms up......Any Ideas? Torsion rods came out! Reply #2 – October 11, 2007, 04:36:26 PM Well buddy you have to use MANPOWER. To start off put the straight end in to the deck lid arm then all you have to do is pull the other end up to where is goes onto the little indentations for it. The chilton's book tells you how to make a tool to pull the one end up into place. Quote Selected
Torsion rods came out! Reply #3 – October 11, 2007, 05:12:00 PM I've had that happen. Wierd! Both on the 85 Cougar and the 86 Bird. Nothing was broken, they just came out and while driving. Ya kinda look in the mirror to see which parts are coming out. And they were a two man job putting them back in place. Quote Selected

Torsion rods came out! Reply #7 – October 11, 2007, 06:31:34 PM I had it happen in my '85, and it scared the bejeesus out of me - I though I had been rear-ended. It was a long time ago, but I do remember it being a bitch to get back in. IIRC I used a piece of pipe (actually it was a piece of a lamp) over the end of the rod to get leverage to get it back in. I also remember getting completely in the trunk and closing it to make it easier (WARNING - activate the latch first, with a pen or screwdriver, so you don't lock yourself in) Quote Selected
Torsion rods came out! Reply #8 – October 11, 2007, 06:45:17 PM I would remove the latch on the body (not the trunk lid) completely just to be safe.My luck dictates that I would get locked in and my wife would be late getting home from work, and the temp will be 97 degrees. Quote Selected

I've been thinking about doing this also. getting tired of digging in the trunk and getting smacked in the head with the deck lid due to the weight of the spoiler. Quote Selected

Torsion rods came out! Reply #14 – October 12, 2007, 10:19:23 AM OK, THAT looks way cool. How was the clearance around the battery box? Did those struts hang down fairly low? What about when the trunklid was closed...did the struts try to push the lid upward? Quote Selected
