I spent the day at the wreaking yard tracking down a 85 Crown Vic with a 351w in the engine bay. I pulled off the ballancer so I could use it on my 96 5.8L engine going into my tbird. When I get home I compare the 96 F-150 ballancer to the 85 Crown Vic ballancer. The only difference is that the 96 F-150 ballancer has a crank trigger on it. Other than that they are identical. Did i just waste a bunch of time getting the older ballancer?
Are you going to run a distributorless ignition?
No. What does that have to do with anything? I heard I needed that 85 ballancer for correct alignment for the mustang accessories going on the 351w.
Im pretty sure that the older balancer will work. The only reason there is a crank trigger on the newer balancer is due to the engine being distributorless (think 5.0 exploder/mountaineer). As long as the balancer is the correct oz balance and has the correct pulley holes i dont see a problem. Someone can correct me if im wrong.
ALL 351w's are 28oz balance. I bought a Powerbond SFI balancer for mine. It's the one that doesn't require a spacer like the FMS and other aftermarket ones.
Yup, would appear so...
I'd never trust a older ballancer anyway, as the rubber is often rotten and the ring can come off...
I just might as well use the 96 one with a spacer then. Oh well. Thanks guys.
On another note I got my intake and valve covers painted. Looks like this april long weekend I will do the engine swap and Mass air conversion.
So I installed the 96 ballancer and the accessories from the Tbird and the serp belt lines up with it all. Today I am pulling the engine/trans from the bird. Then I will spend the week cleaning and painting parts so I can finish assembling the 351w. Then on the Long weekend in April I will put the 351w and aod in as one assembly, then wire in the MAF and repin for the A9L. Hopefully all i will have left is the exhaust system which consists of a dr.gas o/r x pipe, dynomax flow tubes, magnaflow lers, flowmaster tail pipes and 3" stainless tips from Canadian Tire.
Snag..... My engine mounts are broken......
Just the rubber doughnut or the metal part?
The rubbers. I just ordered a set from Chuck. I was wondering if Energy suspension made replacements but I could not find them.
Best money you can spend right there. Even brand new stock replacements won't last long with the torque of a 351. I have a set of chucks mounts that have seen 3 different cars with 4 different engines...lol.
I'll have some of Chuck's mounts one day.It seems that everything keeps getting in the way of the purchase.
LOL. I had no choice. The engine was out and well.....it is the best time to do it.
Doesn't that '85 crown vic have the oil pan you want?
Yes it does. It has the oil pan, pick up tube, dip stick and tube, ballancer and flex plate. But like I said, the 96 truck ballancer was the same as the 85 ballancer except for the crank trigger ring.
