Nice write up for our Cars fella's. :headbang:

Nice little read. Thanks Dan :D
All of them beautiful cars...I've had a few.
Still have my '86 Escort GT, have an '84 Coupe, a '90 hatch, an '89 5.0 convertible that is donating most of it's drivetrain to the '84, and of course my Thunderbird, that has parts from about 8 or 9 other cars.
I even had a Taurus, but it was just a lowly 3.8 car that needed some serious work...I junked it. I think I lost 500 dollars on that car lol.
sweet page
Great writeup! I agree and co-sign on the #1 selection. :)
The info on the 87-88 Cats is a little wonky though...
come on. all of us have had a 220hp 88.xr7.
Nice little writeup. I wish I could buy a new 87-88 Thunderbird turbo. Even if it was around 30k, It'd buy one. Albeit, it would have to look exactly like the 87/88 on the exterior. I saw a ford sponsored forum of sorts, and ford said they'd build them again, but they needed 15,000 pre-orders or something like that. I had only have my 88 for a month, I was 15 and I couldn't commit to the 5,000 or 7,500 non refunable deposit. Never able to find it again.
Maybe someday factory five will make a kit car, hahahah. Would love another 87/88, but they're aren't many nice ones, and those that are just aren't worth $10,000
Only those of who have swapped in a full HO engine :rollin:
Reminds me of a guy I briefly knew....he told me one day (since I was wearing a Ford hat) that the new Mustang (this was early 1994, the SN95's were just out) had a Boss 302 engine....he shut up when I told him that the Boss 302 was only available in 1969 and 1970, and these Mustangs weren't worth putting that engine in. He argued with me...said he'd seen one.
"You can't fix stupid."
I ended walking away.
Just for laughs all the cars are cool except!!!
ESCORT GT. NOT HAPPENING
4 door LTD NOT HAPPENING. Maybe a 2 door but sketchy!!!
EXP TURBO not making it !!
SHO even though i had one it is a TAXI CAB with a big engine. YUCKIE DUCKIE
A 2 door would have been very COOL !!! Other than the front wheel drive.
The others were neat and COOL!!!
Nah it's right on the money ;)
Did anyone else notice that 7 out of the 10 cars were Foxes? Fox body FTW!
Exactly. Was just alot of wishful thinking on the part of the author. Even the nicest examples around sell in the $5K range now. Maybe in another 20yrs they will be around $7-8K at most. It's just not a very desired car at this point in time.
Its a good read...if abit untrue....as a XR7 owner I would have loved an 1988 XR7 with 220 w/ dual exhaust.
Travis
There are plenty of enthusiasts of those cars that would not so politely tell you to piss off, myself included.
Bet ya didn't know there's been a few folks to swap in a 2.3t (albeit in the fwd format) into an EGT. I briefly considered this in '06 when I parted my TC, but lack of disposable income and the necessary fab skills to make the mounts, brackets and other stuff needed made sure it never got past the "i wish I could.." stage.
I have an Escort GT..the 2 years I drove it...was a very fun car. Not exactly a rocket, even by 1996 standards, it was good on gas, a hoot to drive, and small enough to toss around on corners on quiet 2 lane country blacktops.
It would be totally tits to have an ecoboost 4 cyl in it....or even tube frame it, and drop in a new 5.0 engine. That would be nice...a 26 year old compact economy car with some throbbin' Ford power....beating up some of those ugly new Camaros. :flip:
I drove an 1986 EXP for a few years in the early 90's, it was also a blast on the country roads, gravel though.
My daily driver is a 1994 SHO, the rockers and quarters are starting to rust away and would love to find a mint 1994ish wagon to put the motor, frt clip and cladding onto. So would that be a DOUBLE YUCKIE DUCKIE ? LOL
I know 302 there are many people that own RAMBLER METROPOLITAN'S OMNI GLH TURBOS or VW BUSES that will tell me to PISS OFF also. It was for laughs. Not my kind of car. (I GET IT) No need to include Chevys in the discussion as you always do. I think you have a real fetish to own a new CAMARO!!! I just chimed in for laughs. I know those cars had a purpose in life just not in my garage. The SHO was a great car no question. But in reality it was NOT A FORD ENGINE. By the way the SHO was De-Tuned for 2 reasons. The FRONT WHEEL DRIVE and Ford did not want it to have more HP than the 302. Now if they installed that engine in a Mustang and tuned it properly different story. They should have installed the engine in a MUSTANG and tuned it to the MAX and blow away all those 302 powered mustangs !! There is something to be said about a V6 That has 220 HP @6200 RPM and by the way that engine could rev to 8500 RPM but FORD limited it to 7000 RPM'S . Once again FORD de-tuned it to not embarrass the famed 302 Fair enough. Thanks
By the way 302 i totally know you always like to tell me to PISS OFF!!! WOW what else is new!!
I know I started this thread on a clean slate...please don't turn this subject into another shouting match as this was not my intention fella's. :poke:
Got it no worry's wont happen . Thanks
Hey Tom
I read that somewhere in the 90's...not on the internet. about the SHO engine...for Ford's failed mid-egine sports car, they where designing in the mid 80's.
Yeah It would have made 300hp at 8000. Also ford didnt want to deal with the accessories it woul have had to made to survive the rpms...
On the list I have owned TC's, XR7(duh), Escort(dont ask as Im 6'6"), SHO,....I would have liked to own...LTD LX, 86 Capri 5.0 T-tops
Like I said...its a fun read.
Travis
:iagree:
It's just a crying shame that happens.
Thanks again Dan for this great article!!
I wish I could find another LTD LX. I loved that car.
I like those as well. They make real nice sleepers
A few years ago, i saw an article in one of the Mustang rags. Some feller had slapped a Mustang clip onto an LTD LX, or possibly a fairmont. Was pretty slick, and IIRC he used the 4 eyed style. Double win.
Nahh, I was just givin' Tom a little static, all in good humor, nothing personal. It'll stop here. :)
Yes, as far as a Camaro fetish, I'd love either a '72, or one of the later 80's IROC Z cars. Of course, it's have to end up with an LS engine...but first I need to get some more done to my two main cars right now.
There is a fairly good condition 85 LTD near me. It's got a 3.8 but it's all there. It would be a cool sleeper project. There was an 85 LTD LX for sale near me a few months ago. It had an SEFI conversion with Twisted Wedge heads and a Trick Flow intake. It also had a T5. It looked mint and the guy wanted $10K for it. The car sold in about two weeks.
Just messing with you 302 we all have our dream car. And the new Cobra 650HP job is burning a hole in my MIND. I love that car. No joke i took one for a spin. WHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pnDLi0o3hWM
Too bad they didn't include the REAL 80's LTD.
Ultimate 80's Sleeper when built. No one ever suspects that car of being fast, no one. :)
This one? LTD clip on Futura

Love that car. :nannerbang:
+1
I saw that car at Carlisle back around 1998 or so. Very nice car with lots of subtle touches and tweaks that really make that car a one of a kind. I especially liked how he had installed a keyless entry pad into the top of the door. Instead of using the bezel surround, he eliminated it and made the buttons flush with the sheetmetal. Very slick idea.
I couldn't take my eyes off that car and it made me want to go buy a Futura or a Z7 and do the same. Talked to the owner for a bit. Nice guy who was proud of his creation and he didn't seem have a huge ego about it either. I wonder where that car is today?
BTW, nice find on the article Dan.
I once saw a red LTD Wagon with an '86 Mustang front end. That combo is now on my bucket list...
Here's some random Google pics of cars similar to the combo I saw:
Sweet, maybe some trim stuff will get made!!
Gumby, that's the one! The wagon that Carm posted is bad-ass too. I just showed it to my wife and told her if I could find one, she'd be stuck driving a "Mustang" wagon for a family hauler...lol.
