Transmission Reverse

Ok so i just joined everyone picked up my 88 cougar ls tonight but its got a weird problem its when i put it in reverse sometimes it doesnt go into it and when you press the gas pedal it just revs right so i let it rev down and then  I move the shifter a bit then it i can feel it go into reverse fine

Please tell me its a linkage problem which i think it is... not a tranny problem sometimes it goes into gear just fine you can feel go in so now i make sure it does go in and its the AOD on the column!..
