Title: 100% All NEW 87-88 Thunderbird Rear Spoilers! UPDATE 01/04/08
Post by: P71 on July 29, 2007, 03:20:01 PM
Introducing the FIRST all-NEW aftermarket design body part for the 87-88 Thunderbird since 1990. The Aerobird Motorsports ABM1 rear spoiler!

(http://natomessageboard.com/uploads/00002568/IM003328.JPG)  (http://natomessageboard.com/uploads/00002568/IM003329.JPG)  (http://natomessageboard.com/uploads/00002568/IM003330.JPG)  (http://natomessageboard.com/uploads/00002568/IM003331.JPG)

A 4-piece mold is utilized and these spoilers will be of the highest quality. Simply paint and install. They will come in White Gel-Coat. The mounting pedestals will have 1/4" plates for rigidity. They are being made by MAP from TurboFord (he makes excellent quality parts for Pinto's and vintage Cobra's already) and will be shipped direct to your door.

100% designed to fit ONLY the 87-88 Thunderbird decklid and bodylines. This is NOT a universal spoiler, and will NOT be available from anywhere else, ever. They are 60" wide to tuck around the body.

Here's the deal, I have to sell 5 to even have the mold made. FIVE 50% deposit PRE-PAID orders. Total cost is $330 SHIPPED to your door! That means I need 5 people to step up to depositing $165 to get production moving (we need 6, but I'm buying spoiler #1).

The price will never go lower then it is now. The success of this product will determine ALL future fiberglassing from me (83-88 FMS spoiler, 83-86 3-piece spoiler, 83-86 1-piece ducktail, TC sccops and hood, fenders, bumpers, decklids, bodykits).

If you are serious at all about having the first 100% new body part for a TC in 17 years, please post, PM, email, or call me.

"100% designed to fit ONLY the 87-88 Thunderbird decklid and bodylines. This is NOT a universal spoiler"

how different are 87-88 bird trunk lids from 87-88 cats? it'd still look good on one of them right? and it does look pretty good, happy to see you can finally buy something brand new, i just wish it wasnt so much.

The 87-88 Cougar decklid is actually pretty similar. Obviously this spoiler is designed to follow the TBird's bodyline, but the pedestals and length/width will all be pretty close, if not right on.

I'm curious as to why your "prototype" has so many chips, gouges, and what appears to be poor paint.
Is this spoiler originally off of something else or a combination other existing spoilers put together to make the one pictured?
Or is this one that you made completely by hand from scratch?

I wish the price could be lower, but I'm already hardly making anything from it. We're talking about a very limited production run of a complicated spoiler here, and it's still priced within $50 of comparable MUSTANG spoilers (new aftermarket fiberglass) they are made by the thousands!

The spoiler itself started like as a McK/Kobel unit, the end caps are 100% handmade (and scratched and chipped easily), and the pedestals have also been modified. This is a truely 1-off spoiler design now.

Yeah, I did the original work to it in Florida in 2002. It's been hauled all over the country and left in various garages since 2003 so it had a rough life. I had a bodyshop in Bellingham fix it up in 2005, and now MAP is really making it nice for the mold.

UPDATE:
The final dimensions are done, and the spoiler is ready for mold-making. The new breakdown is:

$299 for the spoiler
$35 S&H to anywhere in the US
International extra

I will need a $150 deposit from all interested parties (2 more left for initial run) to go ahead. Once production begins, and they go into a "regular" item, I will take a $150 deposit, have MAP make it, and then collect the $149 plus shipping when it is finished. Each spoiler will take 6 hours of work and be made-to-order.

People on the list already, please contact me.

Nope, I have to prove a market. The mold is VERY expensive and it's going to take quite a few spoilers to pay it off. He usually won't start a project without 10 pre-paid orders, but since it's the first item we're doing 5 plus me was agreed on.

Ok, Mike, don't take this as criticism so much as advice:

I think there's definitely a market for 'em, but not at $330 a pop. Most owners of these cars are tight-asses, myself included. I realize there may be $300 Mustang spoilers out there, but you can find spoilers all over eBay in the $80 range. They might be Made In China universal , but sadly, for most people, they're sufficient. We T-Bird/Cougar guys realize that we either have to pay more or make it ourselves, but most of us wouldn't consider a three hundred dollar spoiler simply "paying more" - it's more like "bend over, here I come". Personally, if I wanted a spoiler I'd find something and make it work, or I'd go without.

What you've got is a conundrum: Do you price the item high and hope that a few people will bite, or do you price it low and hope that many people will bite? In other words, do you (and by "you", I mean both you and your supplier) sell a few spoilers and make big money on each, or do you sell more spoilers but make less profit off each one? I realize that you've got to get the mould paid for, but I question the wisdom in trying to get it paid for with six spoilers. If you could get, say, 50 made, you'd likely have no problem selling them for half that $330 you're trying to get for those six.

I other words, if you're serious about producing those parts (or any parts) you need to make an investment, and that investment involves risks, such as doing what Baxo suggested and buying those two spoilers yourself. If this project is hanging on two people buying spoilers that shows that either there is no market (and thus the project should be sped), or that the market will not bear a $330 price tag. I suspect the latter. There just aren't enough people willing to pay that price for admission.

Problem is at $299 (and $35 shipping) each we aren't making ANYTHING. It's going to take 25 spoilers for MAP to break even and 20 for me to as well. If we drop the price and sell what, maybe another 2-3 units, it's going to put us worse in the hole. The 5 spoilers are to see if it's worth the risk at all in the first place.

The guy that only has the budget for an $80 junkyard spoiler won't buy a $300, $200, or $150 spoiler. Only an $80 one. It's more then $150 in materials for each spoiler! Simply put, QUALITY fiberglass costs money. Cheapo Chinese knock off's are made in batches of 10,000 and still cost $150. There isn't 10,000 87-88 TBirds left on the planet!

The price is $299 plus shipping. We can't go any lower. People have been whining about something like this forever. If you guys want it, step up. Otherwise there will be no further aftermarket fiberglass from me. (This is the single most requested part, so if it doesn't sell, nothing will).

To show I'm a good sport ( ;) ) I've got to give kudos on the spoilers. This is the cleanest bit of kit I've ever seen for our cars. That duck-tail spoiler is cool for its vintage only. This really suits the TC, and I can't wait to buy one. That is when I can afford one. (it always comes to that).

oldraven,
I'd love to have you in! You only need $150 now, the rest is when the spoiler is done (about a month from today if I had to guess). Seriously, PM me or something.

Mikey,
The 83-86 decklid has a lot more "slope" to it. It might work, but it wasn't designed for it. I can set one on John's 84 TC's decklid once his or mine shows up to see though.

Well... if the glass' dies can we get urithane body kits insted?

And as an idea. what of someone ( I would but I'm broke) would * sponcer* these wings. Not buy one just pay for one, then after the making of new parts comes out, that said person would get a "freebie" of their choice or a discount on the next part? For example, I'd chip in for a whing if I had the coin, but I don't want one. I want a re-po Body kit to be made, or a FMS wing over this style

I say give it another week before declaring it dead. You have four and you only need two more (I have the coin for one but I never cared for spoilers :( ). I'm not sure I see an overall market for 45, though, especially at that price (though I agree that something like $250, while very reasonable IMHO, is entirely unrealistic since you're not running an industrialized operation, Chinese slave wages and all).

It's got until August 13th, then it's refund time.

If a $350 fiberglass wing can't sell 5 copies, a $1200 bodykit won't sell any. I'm *this* close to throwing in the towel.

If you have one to sell on E-Bay,it may sell pretty good. There are a lot of T-Bird owners who love their cars, but are not members here.I wish I could afford one,but that much money is hard to spend for a spoiler. With that much money, that's a Cobra intake,a set of wheels or tires, seats, etc.I wish it was half as much.Again,I wish you luck and hope it works out for you.

make a mold of the 83-86 ducktail and a mold of the same for the 87-88's then i'd be interested.

Its just too expensive for some people's pockets.

I like what your doing aerobird. Its a GREAT idea to start making more aftermarket style stuff for our cars. But as I said, the price is going to drive some people away.

Keep up the good work.

87-88. They will not fit an 83-86. If it says 84 somewhere I sausage-fingered it :hick:

no, it's the title of the pic folder on your link to the  picture page.... it says "84/88 T-Bird & Cougar rear spoiler".... just thought you'd want to know :)

I like the thought of parts being avilable again. Im much more interested in coughing up for the bodykit then the spoiler. If you can convince your manufacturer to have a taller pedestal i would be interested. What do you think though. another 2 inches taller and on the decklid of a cat??

It's far, far easier and cheaper to let the end user modify the spoiler for taller pedestals then to make another mold.

This will be the only version of this spoiler released, period.

Bodykits would run about $1500 plus shipping. We only pre-sold 4 spoilers at $300 plus shipping, so I'm going to assume no bodykit would ever sell.

Ahh don't give up so easy. You might be surprised! It's not something that you will get 4 orders in a months time, but maybe there might be 4 people with in 6 months that would buy one. I know it's hard for some to wait 6 months, but if it is the only one out there it's worth the wait.

I had to wait 6 months for a custom made EFI harness. Well worth the wait for the quality and function of the product. Oh and I have only been waiting 10 months on a set of ported heads and a custom intake. I knew it going in it would be a wait. I also knew what I am getting in the end was worth the wait.

Hmm...

Well I have to find a bodykit first. I'd rather custom design my own all-new setup though.

I'll talk with the fiberglasser...

daminc,

No, but I'm working on it (anybody with an 87-88 Cougar in my area?). John got his and the original is coming back to me so we'll have a few to photograph soon.

hellsing,

Maybe. I've never been a fan of cars with 4 brake lights (ie- 3rd brakelight in the spoiler and the rear window).

~AC,

Shoot me an email. The wings have a core in them so they're might not be room.
