Misc Tech / Shipping TC seats - or do they come apart?
I need some help with shipping ideas on a pair of front TC seats.  I seem to remember that mustang seats can be taken apart so that the frame can be repaired, are TC seats the same and if so how difficult is it.

If the TC seats can’t be separated into the upper and lower portions has anyone had any experience shipping them via Greyhound or something similar?

AS a last resort how difficult is it to remove and replace the covers.  I did a search and found where a few folks have removed the covers to dye them, but I couldn’t get a feeling for how tough this might be.  Any help is appreciated.

Misc Tech / TC dual fans
Does anyone run stock TC dual fans on a 5.0, and how is the fit and cooling?  I really need to get rid of this flex fan.

Thanks

Electrical Tech / Door lock solenoids
Are they interchangeable?

My driver’s door lock solenoid went out and I don’t have a spare.  I do have one for the passenger side but will it work?

Thanks.

T-Bird/Cougar Parts & Cars FOR SALE / Parts delivery from Alabama to Texas
I’m considering picking up a car in Alabama and driving it to Texas if anyone along that route has some bigger parts that you would need delivered, let me know and we'll see what we can work out.  The parts would need to fit in the backseat/trunk of  a TC.

General Fox T-Bird/Cougar Discussion / Value of parts question
I picked up a trashed 20th Anny cougar and although there isn’t too much left of value, I am going to have a few extra parts.  I’m not really ready to move them yet since I don’t have pictures or anything, but I do have a question.

The main things I have left are the gold turbines (with center caps), the gold grill, and a full digital gauge cluster all in good shape.  I’m all about each of us helping each other, but I do need some cash for other parts, so my question is, what is fair value for these things?

Engine Tech / Oil blowing past the turbo in a TC
I’m turbo illiterate, but I’m looking at a TC with a problem using oil.  The engine has had all new seals etc, but there seems to be oil blowing past the turbo.  The owner believes it is the turbo seal and is providing a replacement turbo with the car.

Is it reasonable that the seal could be bad letting oil past the turbo into teh upper intake hose?

Misc Tech / Strong fuel smell
Since switching to the new 155 lph fuel pump I get a strong fuel smell outside the car.

It’s got me a little concerned.  Any ideas?

Engine Tech / So if I’m going to have to change the oil pan gasket….
I might as well drop in a different motor if I was planning on it eventually right?

The oil pan gasket job looks like the mother of all bitches, am I correct? :dunno:

Any temporary fixes to get me through the next month or so? Can I do any more damage by trying to tighten the pan up a little?

Misc Tech / New issues after the fuel pump change
Well after all I went through on the fuel pump change the car runs like hell now.

I switched from the original to a 155 lph pump, but now it seems like it’s not getting enough fuel.

Tell me what you think-

First of all the car will barely start.  Before the change the old pump was loud, but the cars started right up.  Now I have to turn it over for 8-12 seconds before it will even sputter.

When I get on the gas, it seems like the car has no power, and it revs a lot higher before it finally changes gears.

Occasionally when I speed up to try to pass or whatever, the car starts sputtering and jerking around.  As long as I go slow, I’m fine.

I was afraid that the pump might turn since it was smaller than the original hose and twist the fuel line, so I tried to clamp it down well, but I know it still may have moved.  Especially since the filter sock was different and I was guessing at the angle.  I can easily see that twisting the pump and crimping the hose inside the tank.

Before I drop that $@*&%$ tank again, is there something else I need to adjust after switching to the bigger pump, or does it sound like something is restricting the fuel flow?

Thanks for any input.

Misc Tech / Fuel Pump Change
Well things are not looking promising for changing the fuel pump tomorrow.  I crawled under the car to apply a liberal dose of PB Blaster to make things a little easier, and one of the bolts holding the tank up looks like a big blob of .  I hope like hell that’s just some crud built up on it.

Has anyone ever had to take one of those bolts off with a cold chisel or something similar?  Can the bolt be drilled out if I can’t get a hold of it with anything?

How about a cheap socket JB welded to the SOB?

I may turn out to be nothing, but any advice would be appreciated just in case.

Misc Tech / Which drop in fuel pump?
Well my fuel pump has started to whine really bad, so I guess I’ll go ahead and drop the tank and replace it next weekend.

Does anyone have any recommendations on a good drop in fuel pump?

I remember some discussions a while back about the high flow mustang fuel pumps.

Any opinions would be appreciated.

Miscellaneous For Sale/Wanted / For sale/trade '84 Mercedes 380 SE
I know that this car isn’t up most of you guy’s and gals alley, but hey you never know.

I bought this car less than a year ago after leaving a government job that provided me with a car.  I needed a commuter and bought the car because I felt (and still do feel) that it was a great value for the money.  The story is one of those that will sound far fetched, but I can back up almost every piece of the story with dospoogeentation.

The car is a Silver 1984 380 SE which was initially purchased from the dealership in San Antonio, Texas by a rather wealthy family from the Houston area.  The car had to be ordered from Germany because the wife wanted a non-standard color combination, and quite honestly she is one of those ladies who gets whatever she wants.  The car is silver, and in ’84 the Silver 380 SE came with black leather interior.  Black did not suit the lady, so she ordered it with grey leather.

I was told that the car has been in Houston ever since, and has really never even been on a long road trip.  I was also told that for the last 10 years or so it’s only job was to take her to and from the country club, every day.  I was provided with all of the dospoogeentation for the maintenance performed on the car, as well as all of the dospoogeentation from the original purchase including the original window sticker.

The car has never been wrecked and is in great condition.  The only flaws I can think of are very minor.  The original hubcaps are looking a little dated.  There a couple of spots on the bumper that look like she may have rubbed up against another car or something.  Rubbing compound or something similar might take most of it off, and a little touch up paint would make the bumper look good as new.  I believe there is one small ding on the driver side fender approximately the size of a marble.  Lastly there is one spot on the paint that looks like someone may have dribbled oil or something on the paint during service, it may buff out.

I can only think of a few minor mechanical issues.  The cruise control doesn’t work correctly.  I haven’t had time to see if this is an electrical system or if it runs on a vacuum, but I do know that the rest of the vacuum system is fine (door locks etc.).  The car has recently begun to idle fairly high, I’m not sure if it is a timing issue, or if the fuel injection system needs adjusting, but I intend to have it adjusted before I sell the car.  I recently had the valve cover gaskets replaced and have occasionally been smelling oil.  I was told that the valve covers would need to be re-torqued after having been on for a while so I’m pretty sure that is what the problem is.  The gaskets are less than 6 months old.  Finally the car needs tires to pass Texas inspection, which I also planned to get done this weekend.

Since I am actually returning to the same government job I previously held I no longer need the car.  It is a great car, but I have 3 kiddos and quite honestly can’t afford to keep a nice car in the garage to only be driven when I feel the urge, especially when I am spending all my free time and cash on the bird.  The car is in great shape, as I think you will see by the pictures I’ll post this weekend.  I believe I bought it with about 106,000 miles and I think it has about 112,000 on it now but I will verify that.  The car has never given me any trouble and I have taken it on trips as far as to northeastern Louisiana.  It is bone stock.

What I really haven’t told you is why I think I got such a good deal on the car.  Since I bought the car I have only had the valve cover gaskets replaced as well as the brake pads and brake pad sensors.  When I bought the car the original owners had just had the annual service done.  They did a full tune up, new catalytic converter, etc. to the tune of $4200.  That’s correct – right before I got the car it had just had $4200 dollars worth of preventative maintenance done to it.  The timing chain may also have been changed, I’m not sure, but I will check the records tonight.  I can also provide you the number of the shop that performed all of the maintenance.

I had planned to list the car on eBay as soon as I got the items I listed taken care of, but if any one here is at all interested let’s talk.  Please realize I am being VERY picky about the issues with the car.  Most of them are probably not even noticeable, but I want to err on the side of saying too much.  If you are interested in the car I would sell it outright for $4300.  If you would rather get the steal of a lifetime and take care of these small issues yourself I would sell it as is for $4000.  I believe it is worth much more, but I also need the garage space.  What I would really like to do is a cash/trade deal for a nice 87-88 TC or sport.

If no one is interested that’s cool, but if the wife has been hassling you to get her a nice car and you have some trade bait around maybe we can work a deal.

I’ll post pics this weekend.

Body/Appearance/Interior / Paint on moldings
I’ve been getting some paint estimates and I’m getting some flack about wanting to paint the black moldings to match the body color at almost every shop.

I’ve been told repeatedly that the paint won’t stick, and that first time someone hits it with a door it will crack and start to flake off?

What am I missing here?  I know that many folks on here have painted these moldings.  Have you experienced these problems?

Body/Appearance/Interior / Question for Crystal
Hey Crystal,

I heard through the grapevine that you painted your interior from grey to black.

I was wondering which interior paint you used and how it worked out.  Specifically I am considering painting a pair of door panels.

Thanks for any feedback.
