User Rides / My new project: 1988 5.0L Thunderbird
Updates?
Please post pics of the build!

That's a nice looking car and will be killer after you get all the stuff on it.
Fwiw when I tried to put gt40y's on so pistons it seemed too close doing a drop valve test at tdc. It would be no problem with ho pistons and cam.
That vortech should make some real good power.  How much boost are you planning to run?

Engine Tech / '88 tbird eec power relay location
Does anyone know where the eec power relay is on an 1988 thunderbird 5.0L please. A schematic would be great if possible.

 Thank you,

At The Track / Best way to launch with high stall converter?
x2 on the valve springs. All the Gt40 spec springs are weak. Comp makes a #26140 beehive but that has a bottom od of 1.445". What is stock diameter for the p's? The y's have 1.50" diameter but that 26140 spring may too much @ 377# open. The 26986 is a beehive that is 1.415" on the bottom od and 284# open.
If everyone is running slow and you are running the same you should improve when the weather is cooler. You should have more seat time then with the new setup. Next time roll into the staging lights and leave earlier. If you see the green light when you leave....leave sooner. If you leave on the 3rd yellow, leave on the 2nd and like try to red light. Every .1 you make in the 60' will help you .2 on the top and your mph will go up watch.

Electrical Tech / what controls the hood light?
As a light replacement, some of the older trucks at the yards have a leveling hood light with a reel up extension cord built into them. Very practical but some may not like the bulky look under the hood.

Drivetrain Tech / Doing a gear swap correctly
I have also enjoyed your posts,Tom. Would you be able to share your supplier of stepped shims and crush sleeve eliminator shims when you have time please?

Thank you and keep the tech coming,

Drivetrain Tech / converter

Barely got a chance to drive it around the block a few times before it was time to go home. Its my first stalled auto, its a little bizarre. Ive always had t5's and a 3550.  Looking forward to driving it some more in the morning. The guy who built it put the temp probe in the right rear of the pan, kind of close to the x pipe, so I'll probably wrap the pipe to keep from heating up the probe indirectly.

If you havent read about it before, this is in a 87 bird. Almost everything was bought used, why, IDK, im cheap.

Mass air swap, a9l, 65mm exploder tb, exploder intake, iron gt40's, comp xe266hr, 9.5"converter, Neighbor's Aod, 3.55, Full sn95 brakes front and rear.

That's a real nice combo you have there and should put up some very solid numbers. Great selection of parts and a clean install.

Drivetrain Tech / '98 sn95 rear install
I'm looking to install a similar setup soon and hope you might be able to post some pics. Are you going to use the sn95 cables, brake lines and prop valve? Btw nice find and good thread!

Engine Tech / 347 running like GARBAGE

This manifold is in my view a piece of junk. It has a hidden bolt that is almost impossible to tighten and loosen. I have a 40 manifold in stock but the customer refused to buy it. Stating the one he has is better, Well he is the customer and they are always right.

x2!

The performer MAY make slightly more power than the gt40 unported. Even then it would be very close and there might be tests with the gt40 on top. However, that stupid bolt, upper to lower gaskets that are not readily available and unparalleled looks make the gt40 far superior.
Good catch on the vac leak.

Engine Tech / firing order?
This may have been discussed if so please forgive my ignorance but don't some of those early eec's have a staggered firing order on the cap. After you align the rotor, isn't there a procedure where you skip the posts as your calling out the firing order till you pass up #1?
